While U.S. drug companies reap record profits, millions are dying needlessly throughout the Third World. And the actions of the U.S. government--blocking needed medicine in the face of the devastating AIDS epidemic--are an outrage

I agree with this point. Pharmaceutical patenting system should be liberalised. Restrictions should be taken out. Liberty shouldn't only be in the hands of first world countries. People in 3rd world countries are dying needlessly

The monopoly power given to Western, multinational companies by patents is economically and morally misguided. Such power allows companies to potentially manipulate markets to their own advantage, and exploit legal loopholes to remain dominant.

This is the most sensitive industry. If u remember snofi-aventis was about to b sold off when french govt. came forward and funded the company to avert its selling off to Novartis.Though this industry is driven by research and development ,this is one industry which affects all of us.But i feel this has to be treated differently as this industry needs lots of funds  which govt may not be able to provide  and also needs free minds to pursue innovation.So govt. need not fully liberalise it ,it be given some accountability in a way that there has to be a company-govt. association to weed out the odds and turn out win -win for both the people.Govt. role cant be underestimated as they will ensure that nobody dies for want of drugs.

Protection of intellectual property rights, both nationally and internationally under the TRIPs system, is a legal necessity if companies are to continue to develop new products. Cheap generic alternatives simply would not exist without the original costly research having been carried out. It is just to compensate and reward such innovation, as in any industry.
