Obviously there is never a winner in “language X is better/faster/more scalable than language Y”. It just doesn’t make sense. However, I do have direct knowledge on whether a Java site can run as fast  as PHP or Ruby Site.

PHP is used my most sites on Net. Java is for the enterprise. Java or Ruby may provide utilities that make it easier to code but all these generic utilities also takes away control of developer on code. Internet performance is determined by the developer and PHP gives coder the control

I support php because it is easy to learn and code! While java takes long time to get well-versed in advanced techniques.

Mr. Radhakrishna, I don't think I got u right.

but to test the connectivity or anything else you need a browser testing whether it is JAVA or PHP.

and PHP is also providing the separation of layer in the form of Drupal, Smarty, Joomla etc...

Mr.Jeevan i agree that for big applications JAVA is the most suitable one to use but PHP has many advantages like PHP is designed specifically for web development gives it an edge as a development tool, remarked by the popular intranet Design Magazine. PHP is built with the needs of Web developers and this script solves complex problem scenarios faster and easier than comparable technologies.

So i would say that PHP is more beneficial to use for many purposes than JAVA.

what do you say?

Mr. Volodymyr i would also say that PHP is better than JAVA because PHP was built with the needs of Web developers in mind... Unlike other cumbersome, overhead-laden approaches, PHP is lightweight and focused on the Web - where it can solve complex problem scenarios quicker and more easily than comparable technologies."PHP is an established server-side scripting language for creating dynamic Web pages. As a language that has been designed expressly for the Web, it brings many features that commercial entities are looking for such as Exceptionally short learning curve, Quick development time ,Very high performance.

all these things make PHP more desirable to use rather than JAVA.

Gone are the days when people used some server side script for E-commerce websites. Now we have come up a long way and we are not actually confined to websites now, good web applications are coming up and slowly but steadily the web applications are becoming a part in our daily life.

If you are taking about web, then still PHP is the king. PHP is more powerful now with Object orientation in place, it's not just a Scripting language now. In some cases JAVA is shaking hands with PHP for data transfer and processing (PHP Java Bridge). More and more Php is being used now a days for Mobile gaming.

So for me both are powerful but in it's own place.

While being a developer of PHP and faculty of JAVA
I found that PHP is

> Simple and easy to learn
> Open Source with various supportive community
> No need to remember lots of classes, funcitons and variables etc..
> Easy use of AJAX and other plugins

For Java Application you need lots of libraries, files and some specific environment on client machine too, Which is not been required in PHP.

Moreover Java is complicated, Just learning the intricacies of all the class libraries can keep a newbie fumbling about for months before they get their hands around it. And even then that doesn't give you a working Java platform.Instead PHP is loosely typed. This can be a double edged sword but this makes converting over from something like VB/ASP a snap. Furthermore, installing PHP is much simpler and, if you are using Visual Studio or Linux with gcc you can compile in new features as needed. But what about the inherent things missing in PHP such as overloading, inheritance from multiple object, enforcement of private properties and methods.

PHP is arguably better option because of

1. Speed

2. Scalability

3. Price

To start this kind of debate one needs to reach an optimal point between business and technology. PHP is undoubtedly a better performer in terms of speed and performance. With added feature of full object support and support to service oriented architecture, in internet and web arena, PHP is a better player. It is a true fact that Java is advanced in terms of system communication and application control, but Java lacks in two areas.

1. A java based application can not run without JVM. This suggest that you have to do away with the group of users who donot have permission to install JVM in their system.

2. Java is slow and it adds woes to dial up network based user.

php gives the coder the easy ways to finish the application, but java gives lot of security and scope for an application. Both are better in their own ways.

Java gives you lots of objects and patters witch is good, but in case of small and medium applications it's overhead.

For enterprise level, we have this brand new enterprise level frameword by Zend with all its sugar. It really helps a lot and BTW implements lots of common patterns :)

In 2004, Friendster launched a platform rearchitecture based on loose-coupling, web standards, and a move from JSP (via Tomcat) to PHP. The website doesn’t look much different, but hopefully we can now stop being a byword for unacceptably poky site performance.

JAVA is better then PHP bcoz java provides more functionality for application development.Using java you can create web appllications, desktop applications ,mobile application etc. but using PHP you can only develop a web application, JAVA and PHP both are open source. -------advantage with PHP only it is Open Source and Simple to learn and Easy to implement. -------------adavantage with java - it is Open Source too and it provides a lot of built in API's for application development.

Mr.Nishad I agree that JAVA has some limitations but Java provides better separation of layers - key for testability whereas PHP has all the code embedded in the page, so you have to run it through a browser to test if database connections work (for instance). This i think is the biggest advantage of JAVA and limitation for PHP. what do you think?

They are differernt.

I  think most us feels php much easier bcoz they already knows JAVA. By knowing java, i think it is easier to learn any language.

Its only my assumption ;) im not sure abt this.

It is obvious that language always is in strong position .Java is language that supports inbuilted librarys .So that it's worke is faster than other language.PHP is all about web devlopment.

So it will not better than Java

For Big applications which one you prefer?. I prefer java .

PHP is good for medium sized and below that level ...

Java is pure OOP languages. So U can learn other modern languages easily if required.

For large application java is best option. As java keeps business logic separate from the presentation logic.

Moving to PHP has worked for Friendster, but this probably means that they didn’t grok how to write a Java web application that can scale.  TheServerSide doesn’t run fast, or slow, due to the fact that Java and a JVM are in the loop. What is required for scaling is the architecture. Two most important pieces are

  1. Smart caching is king in internet application. Weilding that tool well will allow your cluster to scale. It also allows us to get away with sloppy lower-level code, as in the grand scheme of things those nano-seconds don’t matter!
  2. The biggest bottleneck is not on the server side but on the DB side and you have to ensure that you solve the DB side bottleneck
