I find the debate amusing. Why this big fuss over a non issue. Laughing. O. K. Please tell me, why there is not even one supporter of the price of Rs.60/- per litre that you pay regularly. I pay much more at my place of work. If you are so much against the price, stop buying petrol and use local transport. It will be great service to the nation, the society, economy and mother earth. Petrol is costly because of taxation. The difference in petrol and diesel prices is mostly due to central taxes. So, you must switch to diesel run cars. If the people stop buying petrol cars, pricing and taxation will also change.

In India we travel unnecessarily many a times. It may be for attending functions, rallies and so on. Marriages can be simple family affairs and others can be just informed about the marriage and gifts with blessings can be in the form of bank transfers to newly wedded couples bank accounts. Boycott all rallies and political parties functions. Stop inviting Politicians to functions. In urban infrastructure planning demand for Bicycle tracks and pedestrian walk ways with flower, aromatic and medicinal plants on ether side, so that people can  start walking and riding Bicycles and keep themselves fit. Increase Petrol price and reduce price of diesel used for public transport and goods carriers. Boycott people attending political rallies as well as wasting money by organisation functions and rituals.

Remember people don't travel by public transport because they are not convenient, Many people would like to walk or ride bicycles but we don't have proper facilities.

i support.  petrol price in hyderabad is 65/- per litre. 40/- is the tax component in this. if govt. is for people, it is a necessity why cannot tax on petrol be reduced so that price will come down.  govt. want to cash on the cost of our necessity.  How can we say govt thinks about the welfare of people in this situations.  they can play a neutral role. if prices in international market rises, let taxes reduced, if price in markets when fell down, raise tax component and atleast maintain equilibrium price of Rs40-45/- it would be some what helpful.

You are right Mr.Namrata, our government is helping some big shot to increase the prices of petrol in lieu of funds received for political purposes.

This petrol pricing is the last part of the license raj prevailed in 80's. In order to control the import bill, the price of petrol is taxed high by the government. Our pricing is highly escalated one, and it is a misnomer to say it depends upon international pricing. In INR value the petrol price is at Rs.16/- in Pakistan, much below Rs.40/- in srilanka, where the currency of those countries are weak in comparison with India. As everything is privatised let the petrol import also to be privatised then the value will come down heavily, provided the government of India doesn't influence the price by higher taxation.

The cost of production of petrol should be much less than Rs 40/- and with a reasonable profit, it can be sold at Rs 40/- or less. One needs to analyse the cost of manufacturing systematically and truth with known to every one. Multiple taxation need to be avoided. If there is a need to have better technology of production, better implement. No need to pay for inefficiency.

yes Namrata ji

The petrol should be priced at or belowRs40/=;any pricing beyond hits the belly of common man, transportation to morning cup of tea/coffee in a tea stall and the core industry and it has a repercussion  and a cascading effect on the entire gamut of Industry. Its high time the govt supplies uniformly the entire length and breadth of the country at uniform prices,it is the excise and sales tax take the toll of pricing of petrol.

Four years back, I had the opportunity to meet the GM of a PSU Oil company. During the discussions, he said "if the Govt allows me to sell it on my own without any controls, I can sell a litre at Rs.14/- and stii make a profit"

Government if regulate the price of petrol below Rs 40/- they can automatically put brake on inflation, as a common man would be happy naturally the economy would boom, the other serious limitation in doing this would be the fiscal deficit, well but it is a wonder that if 2 scams can amount to a total of 4 lac crores of loss to ex chequer I think if honest governance sets in the deficit can be comfortably taken care off. and yes for those worried about carbon emissions please note that the demand will not be controlled by keeping fuel prices high, it requires awareness amongst all for judicious utilization of non renewable sources of energy. till such time that technologies using alternate sources of energy becomes more commonly used.

Yes you and I can stop buying petrol/disel but what about public transport corporations? and Goods Carriers? Question is not just what you and I pay, it is bout the impact of the hike in prices of fuel on commodity price/inflation etc, that effects every one of us. We can understand if the profit generated is used properly by the government. Governments wastefull expenses and the cost of having number of ministers need to be looked in to and reduced then there wont be any need to hike petrol price.

Petrol in Pakistan Rs17 per litr Malaysia Rs 18 per litr In India it's Rs.65per litr Why is there a difference within India itself? World Market CRUDE Oil is not the reason for this. It's all Gain for private owners? As we are the general public, or Common Man as R.K.Laxman wud hv said, we have to raise our voice, let's raise thru Emails. IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF PETROL FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES. AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES. THEREFORE " Feb.14 th" HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT UP THEIR BEHIND " DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF PETROL THAT DAY. THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT. WAITING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO? REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF PETROL GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH AFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING SUPPLIES MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN. SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

Prices of goods must be driven on a Cost+ basis. In India, fuel pricing is a politically sensitive issue. There are also huge amount of taxes on the petrol at every stage that has a cascading effect. The Govt. is thus forced to subsidise the prices. It may be however noted that if the subsidy on diesel is reduced by Rs. 1/-, the price of petrol can come down by Rs. 5-6/. Internationally, prices of these are similar and on par. At places, doesel is more expensive. In India it is the other way around WHY

It is cheaper in Pakistan because their transportation cost for getting crude oil from middle east is lesser than India. About Singapore they have lower import tax on crude.. Indian Oil marketing companies claim to make losses even when petrol is priced at Rs 60 and the Government cannot take any such decision of reducing tax, the deficit is already higher and budget is expected.

I a country like ours where there is heavy subsidy on fuel and where people do not pay their taxes and where there are hardly any oil reserves, fuel will be costlier and depend on international pricing.

We are still having Cooking gas in lesser cost than the Govt has to opt, but Price of petrol cant be considered as utmost consumable so the price depends upon the International Market.

I support this argument that petrol prices should follow international pricing.Of course there are issues like speculators who try to manipulate the prices high. What we need to do is analyze and see if the price is not worth, better we stop using petrol limiting its use, then once the demand is less and production is more automatically prices will come down. This is cycle and will never stop.Sometimes it goes up and sometimes it comes down.

I would like to draw your attention to US Economy downfall in year 2008 - the main reason was subsidy on housing. Let us learn and stop subsidy by government and pay the real price. Of course the rates should be reasonable. Tax payers who do not use substantial petrol should not be burdened for concession in rate.

As any other commodity, it should be considered. When products are coming out of the workshop, it's prices are decided there. Not by us . So does petrol . Levies charged at center and state can be considerably reduced to burden the people. Moreover, it is one area where govt can earn it's exchequer. Because it is  widely used. It is just a cyclic event. It never stops. It's an economical balance to be maintained by the supplier and the Govt.

Mass transportation can be additionally improved to facilitate the public.

I personally support this section. Compare to other countries India is of the biggest user of these fuels. People of our country mostly get used to the situation they face. No matter how far the tax on fuels or any other things increase people will support it. This support from people for increase of tax indirectly shows the adaption of that situation. The price hike in fules i.e. petrol and diesel are likely to be hiked every year as far as the central taxes are concerned.
