Confusion abounds in what are the differences and similarities between process management and project management. There is a lot of literature in management circles that purports that we should be creating organizations that are led by projects or processes. So which one to go for.

Companies are organziations that are dependent upon processes and workflows for daily operation. Progressive, successful companies also incorporate performance monitoring and improvement to ensure their processes and workflows are effective. Processes are ongoing and ever-evolving to adapt to the changing needs of an organization.

Projects are critical to the success of a company, and strong project management is a KPI when you look at whether a project will be successful. However, a project has a definite beginning and definite ending, and projects are not required for a business to operate on a daily basis.  Projects should be focused on achieving a particular goal -- implementing a software package that will enable improved time entry for employees, for example. This project will likely impact the current time entry process... but the project will eventually end. The new process that supports the software implementation will be used indefinitely.

Project Management is the application of knowledge and expertise to the development of Project Scope and a Project Plan, which meets or exceeds stakeholder requirements. It is a temporary endeavor. So it is time-bound and has a customer. So it is of much vital importance as compared to process management

Project Management is also a process. So if there is a drive for Processes, any "Management" will be executed properly.

Also there was a major debate on the same topic and its results can be found here:http://toostep.com/debate/process-management-vs-project-management

Process Improvement is the examination of a business process in order to better meet customer & quality requirements. It is apparent that the correct thinking is that all work is a process and that projects fit into the framework of process management.

I would see these two activities rather distinct and nevertheless exchangeable or replaceable with each other. Both of them is needed when time comes.
