Is it good to have project management office (PMO) for all the companies ? Can distributed project management style gives better results than having PMO office ? In my company we dont have PMO yet we manage projects efficiently and effectively. Can it be better with PMO in place ?

It all depends on how we design a PMO, there are no set rules and no direct relation with organisation structure. It all depends on what the Sr. Management is interested and looking to improve.

A typical PMO function is to report on financials and project(s) progress, but PMO can be extended to Portfolio function too where the it can provide a view about Demand and Supply and address resource needs. In organisation which are huge in size and have development centers in multiple locations, there is a need to understand capability of each location and capitalize on need basis; for this PMO plays a critical role if designed properly.

I feel having project management office will greatly help for matrix type of organisations as it is a centralised body which manages the projects. But for functional and projectised organisations it will give good benefits with the expense of more time and cost.
