PMBOK is not a complete book! it can be used as guidance but then people have been completed successfully projects for more than 5000 years!

I have completed dozens of six sigma "projects" and having managed projects but PMBOK in most cases is a design to fulfill a set of specifications including budgets and schedule. where as, Six Sigma is designed to drive defects out of a process. Six sigma could be applied to analyze data from a number of completed projects to develop a process improvement plan.

But anil in many a cases PMBOK methods have failed not because they weren't adding value but because you couldn't measure the effectiveness of the methodology or quantify the value added by process changes. Six Sigma provides that structured data-driven methodology with tools and techniques that companies can use to measure their performance both before and after Six Sigma projects.

I could say both are complimentary and as its own advantage, PMBOK Practices identify the requirements or in effect process elements of effective project planning. Therefore, process is the pinnacle of PMBOK. Six Sigma's pinnacle is measurement and it is intended to be used for process improvement. Six Sigma is more data driven and not process driven. The two are quite complimentary however. I have over the years used both disciplines to help implement process improvement. You will find that highly effective organizations that have mastered Six Sigma are already using PMBOK practices in general.

In PMBOK, with my experiences it has helped me in implementing large Projects well and also helped in coordination smoothly which I don't see in Six Sigma. And in fact Six Sigma also uses PMBOK Planning in terms of Organizing, Managing, and Controlling Methodologies. Will it be helpful if we just concentrate on Six sigma initiatives to get desired results....
