Quantity Surveyor - Manages & Handles Data in a Project What an unprofessional perception of the role of Quantity Sureveyor that too from a person who proclaims himself as Project Manager. Won't the above description fits in for the Document Controller too? Although the topic of this debate is totally pointless, it is not necessary to demean a profession by recording some improper comments. Quantity Surveyor's role is more synonymous with pre and post contracts management, cost control, etc,. One cannot limit his role to handling just data.

Ms Pragya I think there should not be any comparision between both as the most of the persons said. QS & PM both are in leading role of any project. The aim of both is to success of any poject but there is some differences always occurs at the time of finalisation of rates . At that time most of the PMs do not care the rates / cost of the project because progress/target are their priorties. On the other hand The cost of the project is the top priorty of A QS as well as the time factor. A QS planning always helps to PM to procure the material monitoring the cash flow etc. At the conclusion the smartness of the QS make easy worker to PM.

A Quantity Surveyor is the maker and keeper of project data. He creates data out of Designs, drawings, sketches and need be, even from images. He converts complex designs and multiple drawings into easy and understandable data. He is in thorough understanding of a project even before the project has taken off the drawing board. Based on this data major decisions are effected. The role of the Quantity Surveyor varies from organisation to organisation, while working for a contractor he is the tender winner, when working for a developer he is the person who can hint at various cost cutting measures and when he is working with a consultant he gives the cost projections. He can create Numerical data (costing), Technical data (Specifications) and Administrative data (Contracts). To compare a Quantity Surveyor and a Project Manager is not right because in the absence of any one of them the project will suffer. But, I would like to add that the QS builds the field where all can play.

Definitely there is no comparison between QS and PM. I agree with Mr. Nitin. He explained so nice. The Project Manager only person who can take the project towards success. At the same time good team makes it posssible without pain.

I totally aggree that ther is no comparision between QS and PM.Infact PM is more smarter and hard working than anybody in the project team.Project mnager is Line manager who generates results.Quantity surveyor documents the measurement and bills them.A smart QS is a real addition to the Project team's quality work.

Ms.PRAGYA, Qs.IS a part of project who handels the datas related to project. But the Project Manager has to look after every aspectof the project . If any thing is not operating properly PM has to get it done. Here qs.is only playing a supportive role regarding datas only.No doubt althoudh in running a machine every part even a screw is important, similarly every person is important in project. But PM is the power house of project hence he is more important.

Roles of QS and PM are totally different so comparision is not realistic. QS has to work in pre construction stage and PM has to work in execution stage. Both can be hardworkers and amart workers in respective fields. QS is to work is as support staff to PM during execution stage to check the deviations from original plan/estimate. Infrence should be role of both are important but PM carries responsibilty of the project hence is more important than QS.

Really speaking, there is no question of comparision between PM & QS. Both are equally important for the project. But I will give bit more emphasis to PM, as he is leading the project and gives it the physical progress after studying the drawings, contract specification and managing the different resources smartly and effectively. Whereas, QS is converting the physical progress in to the financial progress with proper documentation & justification in a systematic approach and also strive hard and smart to enhance the maximum monetary advantages for his company.

Completely agree with Mr.Yogendra.Basically Quantity Surveyor role is to manage and control contracts and costs within construction projects. This involves the deployment of an extensive set of skills acquired through specialised formal education, specific training and experience whereas Project Manager role is the discipline of planning, organising and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives.

Both has to do smart & hard work but still I feel Quantity Surveying profession should move up and be more accountable for the performance of its services. I agree that being in charge of financial matters & data carries with it a great responsibility and the Quantity Surveyor has the expertise to provide independent advice on these matters. The Quantity Surveyor main responsibility should be to reduce the load of the Design Team and Project Manager. Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers from the same company do not regularly work together on projects & this perhaps an indication that construction companies have not yet discovered the potential benefits of this combined service............

Quantity Surveyor - Manages & Handles Data in a Project Project Manager - Manages & Handles Project A Good Quantity Surveyor but Bad Project Manager shall result in accurate documentation of errors and deviations which resulted in Project Failures.. Where as undoubtedly only a GOOD PROJECT MANAGER can lead to Project Success...!!! Hard Work / Smart Work are applicable for both cases
