In today’s world, everything is possible. With limitless choices and such a diverse job market, one may find oneself taking decisions as practically as possible and yet, ending up confused.

What are some of these emotional ups and downs associated with leaving one's job?

If you have left your job for a goal or purpose, then, there is no reason to grumble. If you’ve just left your job and are in a transition period and you already have the next step clear, then there is no reason to be sad and gloomy in my view.

It’s important to use one’s time constructively whatever the situation is. The silver lining is that during the transition period, one has the luxury to explore more opportunities than otherwise.

Agreed with Gargi that passion is important but resigning from one’s work can have several consequences for both, the employer and employee. For the employer, it calls for talent acquisition and management. For the employee, frequent job hopping may seem to suggest a lack of direction in a candidate and flexibility. This can hamper overall work experience of an employee.

True, leaving your job should come after serious consideration of the above points. But, what if you have taken the call and left a job? How do you cope with it?

So, better think than regret!

Dear Anand, if I have chosen something for myself, Why would I regret, Passion pays more than anything else. Passion is a human attribute not everyone in world have it, it’s the highest levels of creative capability, if such people are appreciated, assisted they are assets for the society, country, for the world.

In today’s world we need high levels of collaboration, Newton, Einstein; Rabindranath Tagore era is gone,

How many LPA (lac per annum) you make from an organization measure of your capability?

Who is in focus Mr. Ratan Tata or the designers, techies who were paid in LPA?

Hello Suresh

How sure are you that you will live another three years or 10 years from now. How Safe are you, how safe is your "safe" I mean tijori bank balance whatever.

Decision making builds on certain logics like a brick wall, if few fail the wall may crash. Choice is choice, you will never regret, passion driven people never decide they choose. For you it may be numbers; your bank balance, number of house, number of women in your life, so on so forth. From your stand point Passion is stupidity.

You’re writing a blog on too step is also some body's passion driving you, sit back and think for a while.      Are you paid? for writing blogs!!

That can be a tough one. It all depends on what you're passionate about and you have to learn the pros and cons about your passion. Then you weigh your options to see if it would be a lucrative, wise and beneficial idea to leave your job. You really have to look at your options and weigh your pros and cons.

Yes, why not? But one must ensure that the family's need are taken care of during the transition period. I know many people, who failed to take care of the family's financial needs and spent the working capital meant for business on family requirements and landed up in a mess.

Yes, those who have a passion towards a particular goal, they can not work under someone. They quit the job irrespective of the consequences. The urge will not allow them to bend their head. At the same time, to invest the time required on their dream project, they have to be free from job burden. At the same time, if he/she has dependents he/she has to take them into confidence before quitting the job. My personal perception, it is not good enough to think of at this stage. If he/she is free from these kind of family and financial burdens, he/she can invest the time concretely on their dream project. Achieving the dream is regarded as great success. If there is no risk there is no gain. But the risk should be a calculated, well planned risk.

Absolutely yes. If we do anything which interest us or is a passion then success is guaranteed. In this competitive environment with so much of responsibility and expectation to meet we hardly get the lifetime chance to take our passion as career. It require courage to quit job and pursue passion. But anything done with passion will definitely lead to success and happiness. And if we want to happy we need to derive the happiness from the work we do for living and this can be achieved if we pursue our passion. So go for it!!!

Definitely yes...for a goal, dream or whatever. We only have one life to fulfill our goals. For that reason, even if we quit the job it is simply justified I believe.

Gargi the topic is very good more than worth participating. But your own response seems to be very personal.

It takes real guts to pursue passion that too by quitting job. People succeed people fail. But then success and failure are everywhere. Not only this success has got different definition for different person. What is more important is that you know what is success for you and only then go for a change.

But at the same time you dont have to take words of somebody like me who has never shown guts of attempting such venture.

While passion is central to entrepreneurship of this kind, when it comes to taking the jump it would hold the entrepreneur in good stead to evaluate his readiness and assess the support/advise he would require in various areas. Having a business idea and managing a business, though related, are indeed two different competencies. As a first step, the aspiring entrepreneur needs to evaluate his readiness to take the leap, and once satisfied, then arrive at making the decision whether to follow his passion or not.

A tool for entrepreneurs to evaluate their readiness: Evaluate your readiness

Thanks for the reference Gargi!

From a practical standpoint I agree, its better to choose and invest time, money and energy in something we want to do. As this can only provide the utmost satisfaction even for an iota of achievement.

Daily basis we come across so many people who have certain hidden talent or passion for something but they keep themselves bound to the job leaving them highly frustrated. In such scenarios these resources are actually not contributing towards betterment of self or organisation, they are just nursing a time pass in the name of Job. Of course they have their valid reasons of being in job and not pursuing what they want to and I respect that.

But I believe its more to do with individual psychy, whether I want to create my own rules and play the game as per my standards  OR  I play with someone deciding the moves, someone deciding the game plan and I be just a dummy taking orders.

If we have passion for something we must imbibe courage to stand for it.

Staying put in job and pursuing passion half heartedly will do no good in eitherways.

It is always better to pursue your goal or purpose or passion, but after careful practical planning ... I will talk from my experience;

I wanted to pursue my passion, but was not practical and clear about the plan and steps and therefore struggled/suffered with low skills in marketing and promoting myself, if that is taken care I see no reason why one should not pursue one's passion;

Also, one needs to take action steps without emotional slavery and not just leave jobs due to high emotions; I suffered due to that also ...

Yes this is one of the way to be passionate but for how many times. This has be done without distubing your family life. When your social responsibilities are at par with professional, some times you have to slow down your passion. Gargi, your argument is perfect till the age of 45 but after that it may have difficulty. Hope you are in agreement.

Reasonably I should say No but I've observed than quitting a job for a passion can be a good thing for pleasure in life. Doing a job whoch is rellyboring can transform personality and make somebody sad and provoke deseases you cannot cure.

Changing for a passion as soon as you are careful enough to prepare and "build" it help enjoying life and be happy. With morphopsychology I often worked with people who changed because they were built to do something else. They could not be happy doing the job. It was really necessary for them to change for THIS occupation.

Yes, one should follow one's heart and explore more than what the current job role is. If there is a passion for entrepreneurship, it should be explored but only after a proper understanding and contemplation of the pitfalls.

If there is sufficient reason for taking a break(sabbatical) which could be either enhancing skill sets(or acquiring new ones), further studies or exploring new opportunities it would be good to take the plunge. Most corporates today take a lenient view of people who have taken a break especially for reasons mentioned above and later wish to come back to corporate life. It all depends on how you can sell your story, justify your action and most importantly market your skills.

Thank you for the referral, Gargi.

It depends on the financial stability too. Sometimes if you are unable to reach your goals as expected, you may end up with miseries if there is no financial support too. But it all depends on the desire what you want to be. If you are really serious about your passion, you will definitely be successful, whether you quit job or not is secondary. Regards, Edu Ahead. It is never safe if you quit your job to pursue passion. You can't term it a wise decision. In order to pursue passion, one should do all the home work and only after making himself sure about next option, a decision of quitting should be taken.

Majority of people think that their job was just the need of the time and circumstances in life and because of continuous involvement in their job and family matters they could not persue their passion. in my opininon the safest of the thing would be that you make your job itself your passion and then you can fully enjoy your life. Quitting job for your passion is fine for you it is ok but your passion should not hamper the life ofyour family.

In my opinion after getting married and once you have kids you don't have the time for thinking of your passion, after that you are always loaded with responsibilities and happiness of entire family in itself becomes the passion. Fine! you can quit your job for your passion but think for your family's passion on a whole otherwise you would land up in a disastrous situation. The point is that if you think you are so passionate then why you selected a job which is off track as far as your passion is concerned.

For singles it is fine but you have to make up your mind and make your passion as your job before getting married.

Having a passion is good thing in human life and we should analyze how deep are we with it? Is it passion or attraction(glamor). Decision must be an solid one not an juggling one and put others into serious trouble - it could be office, family or friends.

India professional scene has not reached a level of maturity where quitting your job for a passion, however strongly felt, can be appreciated. It is a harmful thing to do, more so, if you intend to come back looking for a job after pursuing your passions for a while. You will be viewed as an unreliable person. Unfortunate but true.
