Following the recent controversy over Aishwarya Rai's 'whitened' face on the cover of Elle magazine, it seems like the actress might actually take some serious action. It is expected that the actress might sue the international fashion magazine for making her face visibly fairer than its actual colour. Why is this racism has gone out of control today. With this it gives me one important question to ask like Is racism taught or learned??

Discussing racism is similar to attempting to have a coherent conversation about confusion; it’s difficult to figure out where to start and then how to proceed.  Because Racism or prejudice is the quintessence of ignorance and produces the most potentially confusing and violent visions of deception: other people are different from “us” people.

Racism is prejudice and the words themselves tell us something: Race-ism and Pre-judge are not thoughts of reason or logic and no innocent child's mind will produce them. Pre-judging is a reaction, not a thoughtful response and for a child or young adult to form the basis of such reactions there has to be two factors involved:

1. A lack of education and constructive experience with other races; i.e. ignorance.

2. Someone who is prejudiced must share and instill these thoughts in a malleable mind.

Racism, Caste, Religion are all taught phenomenon. Maybe it stems from the cultural upbringing of the child and the environment - but that again is "taught" even if it is due to Osmosis properties.

I think Racism is both Taught And Learned. When we are young its our parents and grand parents who taught us about caste, rich poor or in single we can say Racism and apart from them there are many religious establishments and parties (groups) which taught racism. When we came in society we learn it from there practices....

I cant agree that Racism is taught. But, its belief strongly seated in the minds. Its a cultural factor. These beliefs are passed to the generations next. These beliefs are imbibed in fact from generation to generation. We cant find any rationality in these believes. Whatever may be the educational background one have, if he misses the rationality in his belief and he blindly follows the beliefs. He fails respect to others beliefs. This is what happening in the world. After all these are only beliefs.

I would like to disagree with Disha here. According to dictionary, racism is defined as "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race."

Racism is both taught and learned to some degree. However, the key to whether racism is taught or learned is dependent upon the type of exposure a child has to the negativity that symbolizes hate. Children are typically raised based on how their parents were brought up. Racist beliefs and attitudes are "passed down" from generation to generation. This may be due to a past negative experience, or personal dislike for a different nationality, which has helped to form a sense of hatred for a particular group. If a child's parents and grandparents act or speak negatively in reference to certain ethnic groups, that child will begin to develop the same behavioral pattern. Although young, children learn quickly and will model their behavior based on what they see and hear. So I think Racism is learned over a period of time by kids and youngsters by seeing their elders behavior on the same.
