Mamata Banerjee's railway budget, coming two months before the assembly election, is expected to shower Bengal not only with new projects but also money to keep her previously announced ones moving. Much of these funds will be for metro projects in Kolkata. The finance commission has already cleared metro projects for Kolkata worth more than `12,000 crore. A rail-cum-road bridge across the 4-km-wide Muriganga river between Kakdwip and Sagar in the Suderbans is estimated to cost of `700 crore and the second may be across the Hooghly to connect Majerhat with the South Eastern Railway network. The feasibility study has been conducted and the bridge is expected to cost over `1,500 crore.

Along with this there is no increase in fare because it is aam-admi's budget:)!!

Does this budget look like designed for India or just Bengal?

Bengal is not separate from India. It is very much a part of India. Considering a State over and above India is very unfair.

So, whether Rail Budget is Bengal Budget or India Budget, it is still an India Budget.

Even if it is considered as Bengal Budget, that would benefit UP, Bihar, Orissa, Andhra, Tamil Nadu, MP, Maharashtra also, if the trains terminate at Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Mumbai, as all trains from & to Bengal would serve these states of India also in addition to Bengal.

Dear Abdul,

You can see the past history of railway budgets, every Railway Minister tried to benefit his or her own state much more than any other state. They can't resist, as their bread and butter lies in the voters of their constituency only. They just try to make their seats firm in the forthcoming elections. So, why should they favor other states from which they won't seek verdict in their favor?

About our netas, nothing will happen to them. They are so shrewd that they can manage to befool people any time. Whether they are in ruling party or in opposition they are one when common man tries to rise against any of them. Even in the present 2G spectrum Ghotala, irrespective of formation of JPC, you will find that everything will remain hush-hush.

Now even BJP Neta Arun Shourie, whose party leaders along with the opposition leader made hue and cry in the Parliament and not allowed the Parliament to function, causing more than hundred Crores (7 Crores per day basis) of loss of the tax-payers money, as expenditure on the Parliament for those days, has suggested that Raja be made as official witness instead of being declared as culprit. That clearly means that even the opposition has desired Raja, being an official witness, to go out scot-free from backdoor getting pardon of the judiciary. So, these netas will remain untouched while some unsupported bureaucrats will get the punishments as scapegoats. AND by the passage of time, our ever-forgiving people, the common man of India, will forget everything after the noise-making opposition derives maximum voting benefits out of our Indian people.

Even our members will forget what such issues we discussed in this forum.

I am neither supporting in yes nor in no column. As disscussed in TV and other platforms it is observed from 30 years of my experience, our neta favors their consituncy or area. Since 20 years the railway is developed only in Bihar and west Begal. After independence our netas work is a discussing point that the budget is for Begal or india. This is ridiculus hopeless and worthless. According to me a railway ministery should be formed one member from each state in lower hierarchy and one cabinet minister in upper hierarchy and finally the commitee has to prepare the budget or the the budget should be prepared in state proportionate basis. Otherwise the time is not too away indian netas will face the crisis like Egypt and other countries.

I think u should go through the budget speech again. Mumbai got 47 sub urban service, projects in Jammu and Kashmir, in manipur - with all these things if anyone says the budget is only for bengal then i doubt whether he has read all the points in the budget.

It is for balancing the development in India. Since independance Railway minsters do favours to their states only. here Mamtha have shown favor to the States ignored by railway earlier. Kerala received a considerable share on railway budget since it's constitution.

Mamta Banerjee is also human being & done nothing wrong for favoring Bengal.

As it is tendency of every Railway Minister to benefit his/her state, & nothing

wrong in it. As everybody living in India loves to known by their state & not as

an Indian.

& Bengal is part of India only, so let us congratulate Ms. Mamta for not hiking

rail fare & at least giving something to normal/ aam Indian.

Yes. Bengal and Kerala should come out of the RED now - need of the hour! Bihar was elevated, now its the turn of Bengal! Railway Budget is a befitting Tribute to our Nobel Laureate Shri Rabindranath Tagore, and Swami Vivekananda on their 150th Birth Anniversaries!

This is true. Bengal  is the key to entry in India. The British successfully entered and managed India from there. The capital was shifted to Delhi later. It has a strategic location and needs to be a strong state and well connected to the capital . It is close to Bangla Desh, Burma, China, and is open to the sea also. It plays an important role in national security, education and business. Large business houses existed there since the British days eg Garden Reach Workshops, Martin Burn, Hindustan Motors and later Metal Box Dunlop India, and scores of others. It is a starting station for several long route trains running across the breadth of northern India and therefore will come into the picture most of the time we think of connecting India.

Very much obvious. With the elections coming up soon it is naive to expect anything other than this.

Mam, when someone publishes a study or research it means there is fair amount of truth into it. You just cannot brush off the matter saying it is fake. If so then you should resonate.
Thanks Manish btw many here are too old for this :) MR. Murthy the link of your blog :)
As such I am not satisfied by the sides given. But the question that should be raised is that why should there be an increase. They already have enough what more do they want?
