Thanks Malladi sir for sharing.....according to my viewpoint , the editorial section in newspapers alone can aid in enhancing one's fluency in communication....The best way to increase one's fluency can be reading novels by good authors and magazines too.

The familiarity, ease with knowledge of any language requires the user to read, write and speak with that language. A substantial portion of the expertise is acquired from just speaking. Reading and writing are secondary. But they are an important secondary. They cannot be ignored. I myself speak 5 languages fluently. But I read with comfort only 3. One more I can read slowly...the last I can neither read nor write.

You want a paper for the news or for the English? Most papers today are turning into yellow rags with cheap publicity articles and photos. If you want to improve your english, pick up a paper like the Statesman (Calcutta?). Read the news, articles and editorials word by word - not sentence by sentence like most of us do while reading the news. Keep a dictionary beside you - there is absolutely no harm or shame in understanding the meaning of a word and its context. This if done diligently will definitely improve your english. Best of Luck

It will definitely help. Only in the news papers we can get wide variety and styles of English writing in a limited space. In my high school days I use to go Municipal library everyday to read English news paper. It helped me to develop my English. One should note down the new words and check it in dictionary. Of course for fluency one should practice by reading loud and speaking with friends.

Quality of English Newspapers are not the same as they used to be in 50s,60s,70s and 80s. English fluency will be enhanced if you focus on centre-spread, viz., editorials, current affairs analysis and letters to editor and specific articles by experts in the week-ends. First 5-6 pages are relegated to the news about negatives and the language used by the reporters are really awful with a number of spelling mistakes, and for the advertisements. Therefore, you have to be choosy in selecting the newspapers if you really want to improve your English through newspapers. To develop accent, watch English News on Quality Channels (National), and listen in current affairs debate.

The bottom line is "Winners don't do different things. They do the same things differently." Those who read newspapers, increase their vocabulary with new words, use them in their day to day life and practice speaking in English on regular basis, will certainly have tight grip on English. Mere reading a newspaper & expecting that it will improve fluency is wrong.

Yes it is one way to improve your fluency. It helps in building better vocabulary and you can be spontaneous in your speech.... But got to practice.... reading alone will not help you.

I don't think it will coz thats what my friend feels and he is from a vernac. med school and has been reading english newspaper since the last 4-5 years. As per my experience watching english news bulletins, talk shows would be usefull as well. And none of these will be of much use unless you try speaking it on a more or less regular basis.
