90 Mercedes Benz Cars Purchased by Rental Company in Delhi. Of course only ones who want to show off use such posh rental cars. Common people , normally tourist use rental cars.. Who else use them? But still as the company has bought so may of them there has to be the demand for the same. Is it a way to show off or it is perfectly alright to rent such car?

We rent cars for various occassion.. Functions and even for long distance group traveling. But these cars are for people from different slot . I feel that we should be happy with what we can afford and work hard to be in that slot.

I feel luxury rental cars are primarily used either for business purpose (pick/drop to airport a senior executive of a company) or by tourists who normally use such cars in their home town. In first case, its more of a treatment/incentive/facility a company would like to provide to senior executives mostly to show that they care and respect the position at that level. in second case, the rent for luxury cars does not matter much to them so they dont debate on this at all.... more than show off, i believe there are other reasons to it.

Yes Namrata one has to stick to his/her  affordability but nothing wrong in stretching out a little, enjoy the ride, during special occasions like marriage & other important ceremonies & functions by hiring such cars which the middle & upper middle class couldn't imagine of hiring such Luxurious cars at such affordable rates.

Most of the time we do things we cannot afford or for the sake of others to protect one's own prestige (false). This is definitely a "show off"! Thanks Namrata for referral.

It is definitely a show off to overcome the inferiority complex of undeserving persons who have grown rich overnight not by their hard work, perseverance, knowledge and skills but by adopting short cuts in their carrier. Once the demand has been created the business becomes lucrative and people start pouring money into the game. A vicious circle is generated. This is an unhealthy trend and sends wrong signals to the world outside who see both sides of the coin viz. the growing number of ill fed & uneducated children in rags, suicides by farmers, old and infirm deprived of basic health amenities and on the other hand lavish spending and excessive wastage of resources by a few rich. This is viewed by developed nations as a sign of anarchy, misrule and chaos in the country. The show off does not impress the sensible persons in society.

Namrata agree with your statement. I think these cars were bought for use in commonwealth games but definitely only foreign tourist and dignitaries will use such cars who else?

Those who have it, flaunt it. There is nothing wrong in it. If you can afford to travel in luxury during your holidays or for a drop to the station, why not ?

It's not a show off, to me it's a personal choice or like Ankur says it's the purpose. If one can afford what's the big deal?

I see this as a Requirement rather than show off! these Mercedes are for High profile businessman not for common man. If i live in delhi and want to visit Mumbai...then without a car i cant move...either i have to hire a taxi which is very expensive sometimes, or i have to hire a rent a car which gives me freedom to go anywhere anytime without worrying about the running taxi meter. So as per my budget i will choose a car and hire it for some days, no harm in that!

It will give jobs to a few people, how can such a thing be called a 'show off'?. This is an indian mentality... that anything that I cannot afford is a 'show off'.

So much of petrol and diesel will be sold, the car need to be maintained - all these means and jobs and money for India.

Also - it is also good to see a few good cars on the street than a few bullock-carts.

It's a pure business...! where does a question of show off comes? If anyone calls this as a show off then what is a huge residence built by Mukesh Ambani? A super super show off?

Namrata........these are good signs of a growing financially strong India keeping pace with the paradigm of change. Its like me telling you why do you work for the American express when we have state bank of India which will give you better exposure to rural, semi urban customers rathar than catering to the HNI customers limiting you to see banking with an optical illusion....... This is a pretty condescending arguement....

It's definitely not a show off... This is definitely one of the comforts ensured for the business executives and tourists... many of us even prefer to have a drive in Merc on our wedding or any other functions... when we can afford merc taxi's, why should we compromise???

it depends. mostly rental cos use used cars. Mercedes used cars are post popular taxi world wide. In many countries these Mercedes because theswe are considered most durable, rough and tough cars. In many countries the condition of these taxis could be very poor just like Ambassadors in Delhi. Besides maintained Mercedes are preferred by all tourists, even domestic ones. 90 cars for a rental company in a country like India are nothing.

It is the demand of the market that's why they are introducing luxurious cars.

Today the Luxury and the High End products market is growing in double digits. This is due to the increase in the DINKY, SINKY and the young at Heart consumers and the tremendous increase in their disposable incomes which has brought in a revolution in the over all market. Availability of these high end products and international brands has obviously made their presence felt and hence the latent demand for these products has been taken care of. The discerning Indian consumer was already waiting for this to happen. Once these products have become freely available, they have gone for the kill. This is true not only for cars but all consumer products from apparel to accessories to apartments to appliances and white goods.
