There are certain words in our vocabulary which are apparently synonyms, but if you trace out examples of linguistic expression as more often used, then arguably there do exists a subtle line of differentiation. Two such words of expression are Reply and Response that are sometimes used interchangeably without much problem in understanding the context. If we research thoroughly on verbal expressions, read between the lines and try to decipher the line of differentiation, then arguably some of the points emerge that can be explicable through some examples. It seems that ” Reply” is a kind of manufactured response which is relatively more cognitive in reference to a definite context whereas “Response” is a type of reaction which may or may not be cognitive or manufactured and may be in reference to a definite or not too definite context. Furthermore, Reply is more often used as a verbal response mainly in speech or writing whereas Response can also be received from machines, biological or chemical systems. Response can be automated whereas Reply is normally worked out cognitively. Response is normally spontaneous. For instance, a diseased body can respond in a particular way to a particular medicine or treatment. So, response is a sort of reaction that is different from a reply. Both Reply and Response can be used as noun. Unlike Response, reply can also be used as a verb. Respond is used as a verb for a Response. What do you think?

Response can be non-verbal, spontaneous and proactive too while reply is formal, verbal and reactive.  Responding is to a situation reply is to a query.

Good post!

Reply is more subjective- used widely in written and oral communication, whilst

repsonse is more of a reactive action and more of a collective acknowledgment to a query.

Reply is meant for formal communication received in writing. Reply can be ubiquitous, mundane which need not necessarily to be logical. Whereas, Response is for a specific Query, which should be precise and direct.

A "REPLY" is supposed to be direct

response, as in personal and business

corespondence, whereas  "RESPONSE"

could be nondirect reply such as that

seen in Politics and Media.

Reply never becomes response. We can not treat it as a synonymous word. Reply is an action of a query where as action is an adoptable deed to the query. For example, when any thing happened unexpectedly, then the query comes in line for finding the fault. Where the response is makes it 'ultimate' (in action) which is not to be done so. We can give another word to it as "answer and action".

Answer gives the presence of the person. But Response makes the person to bind it (responsibility). The person has to decide who makes the query about the thing - which it applies.
