Retaining walls are required for many civil engineering structures like bridges-abutments, side slopes of roads etc. construction methods for retaining walls are changing. should we stand in for old methods based on mass, and which stills remains after 1000s of years of construction?? or should we go for newer techniques which consumes lesser time and space???

In very high embankments only toe walls with pitching will do ,where RAINS AE NOT NOT ABNORMAL.

Yes we should go for new ones. But Mridul what you are suggesting in your answer is not the fact. Neither are the Reinforced earth walls new to construction industry, nor can they be made by just any locally available material. On the contrary they need a lot of skill on both material and construction and focussed efforts in logistics. The speed of construction is also limited. The fact is that the construction managers, if they can, try to avoid it.

But yes it has an advantage of space and cost (after certain height only). They are also preferred where aesthetics is important.

New technics are being developed. We can adopt reinforced earth (also called Mechanically Stabilised Earth), which is economical, space saving and well suited for restricted areas.

The Newer techniques will be adaptable for the changijng environment and other external forces ,

new techniques will also have unbelievable strengths.

I believe construction processes using newer techniques is better because it takes lesser space and is less time consuming. Also it is less economical and more trendy. The traditional way to construction using mass not only is more time and space consuming, it take a lot of care for finishing and many a times doesn't look so attractive. So, I'd prefer the newer techniques of construction.

The conventional concrete retaining walls which are based on the gravity principles, are quite expensive to build and need long construction time.careful design is required when the subgrade is weak and they can’t withstand differential settlement induced by the variation in subgrades.Hence new methods and technologies of retention and steepened-slope construction continue to be developed which can be built rapidly and economically. Flexible faced retaining walls made of precast segmental blocks reinforced with geosynthesis or metallic tendon anchors within the retained backfill soil provide an alternative to gravity type retaining walls. These walls can be built with locally available soil, with less site preparation, with less experienced craftsmen and use simple and rapid construction procedures, more over the of construction cost can be reduced by 50 percentage.
