RFID and barcodes both carry information about products. However, there are important differences between these two technologies and most important which one is better.

RFID is still pricewise the worst option. Barcodes are very cheap to produce, almost every printer can print them and barcode-readers are far cheaper that which (professional) RFID-reader I know. If you need vast quantities of them, I would always prefer barcodes over RFID. Sure, barcodes can be damaged beyond recognition, but so can RFID-chips and barcodes are not hindered from reading by humidity or substances in the environment (steel, iron, magnetic devices and such).

Just for reference, I voted for RFID :)

RFID Barcode

Read Rate                              High Throughput Low Throughput

Line of Sigth Not required Definitely required

Human Capital Virtually none (after setup) REquired for scanning

Read/Write Capability Read/Write/Update                     Read only

Durability High Low

Security High Low

Event Triggerring Capable Not Capable

RFID- Shortcoming:Cost of the Tags, scanner are still on higher side compare to barcode. The standards, technology are evolving still...Integration& Adaptors still a big concern.

So the driving factor is it is depends on industry/product/value or critcal to company....

Ture that RFID is a superior technology. But it will not eradicate barcode completely. If you want secure barcode there are option available by using 2D type of barcode. Secondly or say primarily the cost involved in RFID installation  can never come down to the level at which barcode is. You need to be very sure for implementing a RFID project for the ROI.

I think Bar-coding is better as it is inexpensive and effective for certain tasks. RFID on the other hand is expensive and deploying it is not hassle-free.

RFID is more reliable solution then Barcode , if the barcode is cheaper but you have to reach that place for inventory and all these thing in that case RFID is good solution you have live inventory in sitting in one place RFID Is best

RFID tags offer intelligent solution but Bar codes offers cost effectiveness. Future belong to RFID as requirement for intelligent solution will lead to mass use of the same.

Although it matters greatly for what reason you want to use the ID, RFID has the benefit that it can hold dynamic information without the need of a database and that it is not impaired by lighting conditions and/or colors.

Just for reference, I voted for RFID :)

RFID is secure. Authentication between reader and tag  is a  must for reading information from the  RFID tag. Because of the secured nature of RFID it is widly used for Access control and E- purse applications. Copying a RFID tag is nearly impossible. A bar code can simply be copied. A bar code can simply be read by seeing the numbers written, even without a barcode reader.

But RFID has some clear advantages and it scores over bar codes mainly because it doesn’t require human intervention and more information can be loaded on to an RFID tag. Readability of bar codes can be impaired by dirt, moisture, abrasion or packaging contours. RFID tags are not affected by these conditions.
