During quality monitoring I had to travel on kanpur lucknow road constructed by NHAI ,lane from lko to kanpur was 90% ok while from knp to lko shown failure signs,in my previous debate many experts in TOO STEP GAVE THE REASON SUCH AS WATER LOGGING,CHIPPING OFF  OF BITUMINOUS SURFACE DUE TO MANY REASONS,BUT ON THIS ROAD THERE ARE NO SUCH CAUSES WITNESSED.

EXPERTS OF TOO STEP ARE INVITED TO GIVE THEIR VALUABLE OPINION.

How can you expect people sitting throughout India/world to tell that why such and section of such and such road has failed when you have travelled on the road and could not make out yourself? It is not scientific.

I am not an expert civil engineer, but I have seen road construction in Mangalore of Karnataka and Jamnagar of Gujarat where I am now. In Karnataka, layers are made superficially, but strongly with bitumin as well as tar. They called the MRPL road as 10 Ton road. It is comparatively in good condition for the last 5-6 years. Normally, truck repairs and the resultant oil soaking on the road disturbs the stability as the experts there say. Also, the bigger drops of water falling from trees and other structures spoil the road there.

In Gujarat, while constructing the road, I have seen digging of about 6-7 feet and building the layers from depth. These practices are done in even rural roads. They are simply fentastic. These roads are very stable - also perhaps non-presence of huge trees near the roads as well as lesser amount of rain fall also. Anyway, technology is appreciable.

In both cases, recently concrete roads have solved the problem and they have proved to be most stable.

I dont know what was the traffic density in the said road..but it may be too heavy to mention a reason by the auther,i dont know whether the roads by NHAI designs after a detailed scientific road study. And  I think the unexpected heavy traffic may cause the road damage.

As per the others openions, htere can be several reasons. But as per my experience on Indian roads, The reasons can be as follows:

1. Inadequate dpeth of earhworks above water table, that means the water table is near to the raod layers and makes the layers to soak. This will result in local settlements

2. Improper compaction of earth layers. During rains, inadequately compacted layers will be sink

3. Improper temperature control of the bituminous layers. This will lead to improper comaction and make the bituminous layers porus. During rains, water will percolate and distroy the underlying layers.

In short, lack of quality control will lead to this type of failures. If the pavement layers are constructed as per the internationally recognised quality control guidelines, it should last for the design period of 20 years with minor maintenance works. Hope this helps

The section of NH5 (80km to Vijayawada and 83km from Vijayawada, on which I worked) which was consructed strictly as per designs, was performing well after 5 years of construction except normal wear and tear. However, reasons for failure of road depend upon several local and construction conditions even though the design is perfect.

Good one i think u r right with out looking on ground no expert can find reasons.

the main reason is not overloaded trucks as there is always factor of safety taken into consideration while designing the road crust. the main reason may be improper drainage layer(GSB not laid properly or not rolled properly or fail FDT) which causes the sub grade to fail... there are many other reasons.. but this i think is the most important.. coz the road when designed ... the sub grade is the layer which is always designed to protect it from the water so the roads life may be extended
