She is absolutely right ! Cricket is indeed taking precedence. But in a country as big as ours and as rich as ours there is surely enough money for other games to flourish also. It only needs will power and the political backing to happen. Celebrities like Shahrukh should have continued his good work after the movie by sponsoring an IPL kind of league for hockey.

It is actually money that matters. Football is the sports of Europe and Cricket for India since the television channels are paying a huge amount for Football in Europe and Cricket in India hence the cricket has restricted the other sports in India. As far as Tennis is concerned actually it is not a mass sport along with say golf so it will take time a long time to come into reckoning as a mass sport. Keeping all the points in view i am of the opinion that Sania's comments are correct.

Undue hype created by Indian society for cricket is always detrimental to almost all the other good sports including tennis. But Indians are habitual British followers and one of the chewed chewing gum thrown by them is "CRICKET". Grow up India !! There are other fascinating games also...

Cricket is definitely a passion and almost a religion in India. However, due to its mass appeal, it may lead to less interest and avenues for other sports to develop further. THis can be rectified if the Government focuses on providing more support to other sports in India. Thanks for the referral, Shilpa....

This is one more bad thing left by the British after divide and rule to destroy our nation. Political parties are dividing the population on the basis of caste, creed, religion, subcaste, region, language and so on to garner power either by hook or crook. Cricket is spoiling the attention to other sports and the country is losing ground on many sports whose origin is india like hockey, polo, chess and so on. This is a pathetic situation.

It is easy to throw mud on others. Sania received a very good helping hand from the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. But, she failed to live upto the expectations of the people. When compared to any other sport in India, Cricket has greater appealing to the people. Taking advantage of this BCCI could market the sport more vigorously.

Cricket has been marketed very successfully by BCCI and promoters to fill up their coffers, unlike all other games.

NO ... SANIA IS WRONG ! TODAY, with 100 CRORE + People, Stadiums all across the country, Training Facilities well spread out & over 200 TV Channels to cover the Sport... IT IS WRONG TO SAY THAT CRICKET IS RESTRICTING TENNIS IN INDIA. The right way to put it is... CRICKET FLOWS ALONG WITH BLOOD, IN INDIAN VEINS... That cannot be helped. Cheers !

Its incorrect to say that one sport event is restricting the other. We are following the legacy what British India had left behind! This soil should be proud of Legendary cricketers, such as, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, who have taken the country's image to a very great height, proving to the world that Indians are taking every thing seriously and are working towards it successfully with perseverance. Its the fault of other Academia who are keen to amass wealth rather than working towards developing other sports activities in India. Cricket found talents from less-known township, like, Ranchi, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, etc. nurturing their talents to a new height without vested interest. They are even more innovative and have become the major controller of the game throughout the world. Play well, get sponsors, then other games will also be valued equally!

That's sad. Any game is played and followed for the passion of it. I disagree with Sania Mirza. If only we can have playgrounds for Tennis, we can play it. If more schools will have tennis courts, it will be played among students. My school made me play all sports available. I miss why my school did not have a tennis court. I follow Cricket as closely as other sports. To strengthen, Sania should promote schools to include Tennis courts. Its for us to see, when we look for schools for our kids, if they will such opportunities in their school. No game is restricting other game, its not right for the big famous players to make such demeaning statements instead of creating more enthusiasm in her supporters for Tennis.
