A new proposal is being made from India's drug regulator where the ads of morning after pills which is also known as contraceptive pills will be stopped as they believe there is potential  overuse and misuse of these pills.

Even advertisements present morning after pills not as emergency contraceptives but as a way to have unprotected sex without worrying about getting pregnant.

Wrong message? Ads for Cipla’s I-pill and Mankind Pharma’s Unwanted-72 contraceptives. The advertising council is finding it difficult to take a call on ads for morning after pills as the government endorses family planning on the one hand, but doesn’t like the way such advertisements are being received by the audience.

Take example of cipla ad of their I-pill “Abortion say accha hai pregnancy ko rokna,” and then there is Mankind pharma ad of Unwanted-72 ad which ends with the line “ab ham hain tension free”.

So what you think members, The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) is considering converting these over-the-counter (OTC) emergency contraceptives (ECs) into prescription drugs. If it becomes a Prescribed drug then one can't advertise these contraceptive pills.

Honestly it is really difficult to take sides in this case but then would go in favour of Ms. Anita, there was a danger of these pills being misused, and this was in a way promoting unprotected sex by many, and this was causing problem,  and now may be these drugs will be made prescribed one and the rest regarding the ad issue will be settled with that. Where one cannot advertise if it is a prescribed drug. Where doctors can tell the consumers regarding the drug in a much better fashion than what ads do.

The use of contraceptive pills have been in existence long before I was born and will be here I believe long after I am gone. Stopping advertisement of contraceptive pills will not prevent the usage. Youths of today are very smart and become aware of all sorts of preventative measures without the help of advertisements.

Contraceptive pills are used for preventative measures  as well as for medical purpose for women. Concentration should be placed to educate people on the use of these pills...the advantages and disadvantages.

No use of Advertising these pills like this...The companies are promoting these pills like any thing.Indirectly these kinds of advertisements are motivating people to have premarital unsafe sex...

The advertisement, supposed to be like a  infirmative advertisements. Not to be shown on TV again and again like promoting a BATH SOAP....

Governement will have a senseless answer,,that millions of people are dying every year on unsafe abortion...In these, almost 90% people are from under poverty line. The cant even understand about these PILLS...

The present form & standards of advertisement of these pills needs to be banned. They are not being projected as a last resort, rather quick way to get rid of problem which can have disastrous effects in the long run.Disorders like Acanthosis Nigricans are ill effects of these pills(one of many causes).

I look at it as a piece of information that would help those who do not want to become pregnant after having sex. For me, this is an irresponsible act and goes against Nature. As a medical procedure to be used by doctors, this may have a place; but definitely not as a free open counter product.

One should not take any medicine without the prescription of doctor. In TV ads, company will never demotivate their product but because of that one should not take risk. Medicines are drugs, they may or may not work, may effect the patient negatively, will be having lot of side effects and many more things which if the patient doesn't know, can be harmful for him.

I dont think that advertising contraceptive pills to public is necessary. It is sufficient that Doctors are aware of it.

People in streams other than medical field are not expert enough to judge the effect a medicine may have on their body. Further more if at all the medicine has any adverse effect on their body or it develops some alergy, what are the ordinary mortals going to do?

In my opinion, medicines are supposed to be prescribed by Doctors. They are the right people to prescribe the medicines as they prescribe the right Dosage and medicines of appropriate concentration and intensity only after the examination of the patient based on various corner cases and health history.

The Doctors are intelligent enough to convey the effect a particular medicine might have on the reproductory system of an individual based on the individual's medical status. The same pill can be good for one while disasterous for the other individual.

"Advertising the pill" in most of the cases might influence ordinary mortals to make wrong casual asumptions. I feel reproductive mechanism in humanbeings is "special". Playing with it by taking tablets and pills by getting influenced due to advertisements on assumptions that its just a pill and will have no adverse effect on one's body or reproductive mechanism is not appropriate in my opinion.

"Advertising the contraceptive pill" , in my opinion, also paves a highly probable way for im-morality. (Imagine what would happen if advertising people launch advertising campaign on Licenced Guns and rifles for self protection. Imagine every college student having guns/riffle).

Certain sensetive information should be passed on to public through a responsible channel of Doctors.

The advertisement of contraceptive pills should be stopped with immediate effect. The following are the reasons in support of my argument :

1. First of all this is not 100 % proof. There have been cases of pregnancy even after taking these pills.

2. There can be misuse & overuse of these pills (especially by teenagers) leading to serious health implications.

3. Because of irresponsible marketing teenagers can easily take these pills as an alternative to protected sex which in turn can increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases eg. AIDS.

4. The advertisements are misleading & in a way promoting the pleasures  of unprotected sex.

5. The advertisements are very uncomfortable to be viewed with family because of their double meaning tag-lines.

I am not against the use of contraceptive pills. But it should be used after prior consultation with the doctor. For that if it has to be made a prescribed drug then so be it.

What should happen is that such misleading, unethical advertisements should end. The govt. should have done this a long time ago (almost 30 years ago). That is approximately the time since when the advertisement of MALA D etc. had started. Contraceptive pills don't need to be advertised. This is sth. that doesn't needs advertisements to be sold. What is required is an education drive telling people of its uses & ill effects.

Really it is difficult to judge that contraceptive pills should be advertise or not. But I think it should be stopped advertising because it may be harmful to one's health. So it is better to contact doctor before going any contraceptive pills shown in advertisement.

Good that the regulatory board has finally woken up. I was surprised to see the commercial “Unwanted 72 “on TV, during IPL matches. This is a classic example of advertising being abused and misused, Why?

Emergency pill also known as morning after pill, is a hormone pill containing estrogen or progestin or both in higher doses. The action is to reduce the secretion of progesterone in a woman which is responsible for ovulation and fertility. If it is used on a prolonged basis it automatically stops progesterone secretion, and if used by teenagers, it has a significantly crucial effect.

Target of this pill was for couples to stop unwanted pregnancy. Now the misuse, having advertised the concept of controlling pregnancy in mass media the way it is shot, gives the message that it is a regular contraceptive, which it isn’t.

A lession for advertisers, media planners and pharma co. If the product needs education, come out with advertorials on prints.

Most of us live in a bubble...a la the 'OSTRICH' syndrome. One tends to believe that a media communication is the only way for a potential beneficiary to know of the availability of a benefit. Having said this, I concede that a well laid out media burst does have an impact in terms of making the 'desired' message heard by the target group. The point in case here needs to be eveluated from this perspective. Who is the TG of these ads ? Is the TG adequately matured and responsible to exercise its franchise ? From what is depicted in the ads, the TG appears to be fun-loving, adventurous, curious youth who would not compromise on pleasure from 'the act'for fear of anything. The ads certainly never depict a responsible couple trying to postpone pregnancy till such time that they can support their child's basic needs, good education, dreams et al. The ads never follow a disclaimer stating clearly and loudly that 'UNPROTECTED SEX CAN POTENTIALLY MULTIPLY RISK OF CONTRACTING SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES'. In their present - and highly pervert - form, the ads only encourage in a warped manner the blatant use of these pills to accentuate the pleasure of unprotected sex than for any other cause. For those who are still skeptical of this view may want to check with their neighbourhood chemist as to what percentage jump their sales figure for such pills have clocked during the nav-ratri festival and how their sales of condoms have taken a beating. Numbers don't lie.

In short: the ads IN THEIR PRESENT FORM should be stopped at once. The communication, however, may continue to encourage usage in married / single-partner couples with suitable modifications.

As is known to all, a red-light area in town does not need advertising. Similarly, this product doesn't need ad for its abuse. But for its proper use and intended cause, it certainly needs advertising, a responsible one at that!!

Dear mahay, Thanks for participating!!! . You are seeing in a holistic way it is good but you can't expect others to have the same thinking. Our young generation is fast & bit casual in their approach (sorry :)). This kind of advertisements will only invite them to have unprotected sex. We can see this misuse during many festivals also (local hospital records will tell the truth during festivals like navratri etc). This ads in turn will give wrong signals. And it is hard to say whether we are educating people or inviting them to misuse it.

AWARENESS is always GOOD for a country like INDIA which is on the process of becoming a DEVELOPED NATION, but MISUSE of information or knowledge is totally unacceptable.

The other day i read in an article that OCP's can control the birth when taken as per the prescription. But the STD(sexual transmitted disease) will always be a concern.

I support on the Information delieved by Ads, but now a days this ads are more on direct sales of pills, which is totally WRONG

When we taLK on awareness give complete information,"HALF INFORMATION IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN NO INFORMATION"

HOPE THIS SUGGESTION WILL BE READ BY SOMEONE MANUFACTURING OR CREATING SUCH ADS.

THE ADVERTISEMENT SHOULD ALSO TELL ABOUT THE RISK OR CONDITION APPLIED TO THE USEAGE

Lets be frank about this, the oral contraceptive pills are being used as a reason for not having protected sex by those who would rather avoid the condom.

There are ppl in our country... n cases i've seen even in a city like mumbai where men would put their spouses through the hoops by not wearing protection.... the way things are being advertised is not right, but advertising of contraceptives as a whole cannot be stopped.

Instead of direct advertising and OTC, these pills should be made available via prescription to prevent misuse. This would also lead to a better testing and prevention standards of other STDs caused due to unprotected sex as the doctors would be able to analyze the case better.

But the awareness campaings should go on.

This is related not only to our cultural values but also the health and our perception towards a foeteous who is trying to come on earth.

This is a conspiracy of those medical pharma companies to make business out of it without any consideration of the humanhealth.

I am not a person who can add value to this discussion over technical and medical values such as dosage. and when to use it.

The effect of it over the society after watching their add is  like accepting any kind of sex without any worry of pregnancy which even medical world does not accept it.

If you observe any other animal in this planet will have sex once or thrice in a year. It is againest to nature to have regular sex. Natural way is if you have sex you should be ready to bear the consequences of it.

This is a kind of encouragement to those un natural forces eho are trying to destroy the values of society just for making money. If contraceptive is needed there are many other natural ways to it which I need not discuss over it.

It is just to making money of Innocent Indian public. People are happy even before it.

Many gynaecologists have opined these pills are not entirely safe and many have side effects.  Either stop the ads or put a Statutory Warning (Like Cigarette Smoking or Mutual fund investments) and list possible side effects explicitly.

I agree that ad has not passed the message in proper way. Rather it says have the sex without worry as you have a pill to take care afterward effect.

All these pills have good side affects. Excessive usage can prevent woman to be pregnant and become mother. It also imbalance their physical internal structure. Abnormal monthly cycle and acute pain is normal side affects. The worst is it increases the heart attack chances in woman.

So.. what I believe is if poeple are smart enough to make themselves aware of these pills or other preventive measures, we should not promote it thru TV adverts where audience is of every level..!?

After-effects: I heard on FM that some girl was telling - since we know there are pills to avoid being pregnant.. what's the harm in having sex..!? Since we know now that we can take these pills in any 72 hrs time.. i'm loving sex more.. and can plan to change partners!!!

After which I realized what a shameful attitude ppl are adopting from these advertisements..! So I believe these should be banned completely.. Products like these doesn't need any TV promotions..!!

It's God COMMAND and WILL to the HUMAN RACE to ONLY have SEX after MARRIAGE. It's the DEVIL'S REVENGE on the ENTIRE HUMAN RACE UNTIL ETERNITY OR THE END OF THIS WORLD to goad people to have SEX WITHOUT ANY NUPITAL OR MARITAL RELATIONS PRESCRIBED BY WEDDING WOWS. See what the WEST has WON practicing SEX without boundaries and protocols, also see and shudder at what the WEST has LOST to SATAN. WE should know that ABORTION or TAKING MORNING AFTER PILLS to AVOID PREGNANCY is DIRECTLY playing into the hands of the EVIL DEVIL. IT'S NEVER and NEVER THE COMMAND OF GOD to advocate such immoral practices. SAVE THE HUMAN RACE, SAVE YOUR FAITH, SAVE YOUR MORALS, SAVE YOUR SOULS, SAVE SOCIETY, SAVE YOUR HOME. Today, YOU WILL SUPPORT this because you may be practicing it as a 'liberal' free sex symbol - TEENAGER, EXECUTIVE, MAN, WOMAN, but TOMORROW, if your own BROTHER, SISTER or someone else in the family votes and practices it, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? BY THE WAY, WHO ARE WE TRYING TO APE? LOOK AT OUR FILTHY SOAP OPERAS. THE PRODUCERS & DIRECTORS OF THESE SOAPS ARE SPAWNING A NEW MUTANT RACE OF HUMANS OBSESSED WITH OPEN SEX. IT'S SO SICKENING! LET'S L-UP THESE SEX SELLING PERVERTS IN A STADIUM AND EXECUTE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATES. NO DECENT FAMILY WANTS SUCH PERVERTED SOAPS!

THINK HARD NOW. AFTER ALL THIS FLOOD OF AIDS, ABANDONED BABIES, AND HIGH RATE OF ESCALATING PROSTITUTION, DO WE YET HAVE TO THREAD MORE ON IMMORAL GROUND? THE PATH TO REDEMPTION is NOW!

Advertisements of contraceptive pills is not necessary. As readers have suggested, todays youngsters are "talented" to know about these.(I should confess my generation also knew this at early teenage).

These are necessary for certain purposes and not for Misuse(in Indian context). It should not be that "since it is available use it as early as possible'

These certainly should be with prescription for  people who are in need of it in alegal way.Not to be advertised like Chips -"Try it once now and you wil be tempted to buy and use everyday "concept advt

From what I have read it is clear :

1. Companies are advertising these drugs , which is resulting in overuse/misuse.

2. In general I think that no advertisement for drugs whose misuse/overuse is possible should be permitted as drugs are not like consumer/industrial products.

3.Hence if making them prescribed drugs will stop advertising of these drugs , so be it.

4. But before coming to final conclusion we should see the policy on these drugs adopted by advanced / First world countries , that should give us a clue as to what is the best way forward.

I think these contraceptive pills should be made a prescribed drug as they are being overused and also misused by many youngsters, and being in the pharma field i have come across many doctors who said that there are many cases where youngsters approach for advice regarding these things and after these ads started appearing people are indeed having unprotected sex and are just having these pills. So what drug regulator is doing is the right thing and these pills should be made a prescribed drug and then the ads should stop, in this way a doctor can give all the necessary details regarding the drug and its use in a much better way.

There are adverse side effect of these pills on the women itself. in most of the cases women take it when there is a chance of more harm to them. only advertisment is not necessary also the knowledge is necessary.

The next thing is what was the use of this pill and why it is designed? it is designed to stop the unwanted baby specially in the case of married women. but simultaneously they know at that time that this pill will also be popular in women who don't want baby before marriage.

however it put the men and women on equality but on the other hand women should be aware of its adverse side effect that are too dangerous.

Imagine... by these Pills, How many unwanted Pregnancies can be PREVENTED ?

Imagine... the Financial Loss to all those Medical Professionals who were Masters of Abortion.

Advertising is way you inform the mass about the product, I do not see a reason if the purpose of message is to make masses aware, it can be done in either in staright manner or in vulgar manner

If done in vulgar manner then it is not acceptable, now what is vulgar for some may not be vulgar for others

If LSD (Love Sex and Dhoka) movie with all obnoxious dialouges and statements can be accepted by masses in semi urban and rural areas then how can you deny these advts

It is all in mind

What does a contarceptive advt tell us how to avoid pregnancy - well let me add there are girls as young as 12 years who are pregnant and girls in age group 8-10 who know about this I Pill or Nirodh

why ban , if you can watch FTV, Baywatch and yes have porn on net and videos then this is a must because teens are going to watch FTV, Baywatch and indulge in fansasy let them know about this advt also

Here vide this advt you can create a social awareness about unwanted  pregnancy and child care, why marriage after a particular age is doen , why teens should not indulge in sex and if they have to have to then go for protected sex, in short an advt can be used to create awareness- social awareness

As I said it is all in mind and how you take it

To begin with, advertisements are great ways to reach out to people and let them know about new products. It is a landmark in media. The debate on whether the advertisements should be stopped or not from viewing, is not correct in my view. It is how you project the idea of taking the pill through ads. If it doesn't showcase any kind of images or ideas that are harmful to young minds, then they should be stopped. But if the ads are able to portray the real motive behind taking the pills and avoiding unwanted pregnancies, then they shouldn't be stopped. Today, media is the ultimate way of reaching out to people and stopping the ads may act as a hindrance in taking up good social ideas amongst people.

Hey if they didnt advertise I-pills v would be having abortions unnecessarily.  Moreover, advertisement is bringing the product to the consumer. Unless he knows the choices and benefits, how does he decide wats good. More importantly as a birth control product, these are required to check growing population in so many countries.

When most of the schools and education insitutions have included Sex education and counselling, Contraceptive pills and condoms is no more a sensitive or secret issue. I would see this product would be sold in any pharmaceutical shops like any medicine in the near future to come. More advertisememnts would help to break the myth and ice....and the advertisments should be based on educating youth and future generation than looking at just sales point.

instead of banning the Advts, i think educating the youth and properly orienting them would fetch better results, becoz as far as i know and believe, youths now a days care not for Tag lines of advertisements, they r mature enuf to think, and face consequences for their actions anyway....

there are clinical drawbacks of overdose of these pills, they should be informed about them....

We cut vegetables from the knife, but somebody uses it for killing, but, does it implies that knife should be banned. Physical intimecy is anyway going to be there between couples. So, it's always better to have protection and knowing it, than not knowing it at all.

The real problem is to keep children away from such advertisements till they become adult and fully understand the pros & cons of products.

To extend this, the solution is not to stop advertisement but to change the way advertisements or awareness programmes which can be restricted to adult people only.

Restricts campaigns in offices and only to places adults visit, habitate.Keep places away where family, children are likely to habitate.

From ideation to development, every product demands signinicant amount of investments in terms of R&D, resources and they are usually created either to meet the needs that are not met by the existing product or a latent need that might bring in the neccesity of such a product into existence. We do not have to market a product if the whole objective of manufacturing it is to pile it up as inventory in your godown.  Business houses have better ideas & objectives behind bringing those products to the shopping floor. And advertising is an essential element that will demand it's position quite naturally in your marketing strategy. Contraceptive pills, I agree, will not fit into our cultural milieu and Indian mindset and we may think this would erode our Indian value system. The purpose of the pill is to cater to the specific needs of couples bonded in an institution called marriage which is widely accepted in India and who wish to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Advertising the pills comes with a thorough market research & segmentation with demographics. Advertising, among many other channels will communicate the benefits of the pill to the target audience. So, the problem is not with advertisng the pill but with accepting the pill itself into our culture.

The advertising is actually creating awarness..

But what i believe is that the companies must also advertise the ill effects of taking the pills..

Else showing a waring that consult the doc before taking...

I agree with the coments of Mr.Mahay.

The brilliant brains working out developing the content for CIPLA's Ad have definitely been rewarded - the advertiser too; while the brand has been elivated to the heighest selling single product category. Kudos to the venture! Some one may be able to put on record how many unwanted pregnancies have been prevented(For statistical purpose though!), but no one would be able to tell how many virgins have been deflowered  - leave alone the precipitative disasters perpetrated in the users -  rendering them sterile perhaps for all times. What a price the feminine previlege of creation has had to pay!

Excuse me for considering most of us products of accident. The subtle difference lies in rationalising with the present and learning to live with it; while there are a lot of them who are deprived of the previlege of rationalisation.

Sex is the most indulgent aspect of an active life. Lo and behold! Itis with this species only, where the question of contraception arises. Given a bit more freedom, perhaps we will relish making the entire living world arround sterile. Bearing a child may not remain a boon with the 'Feminine' of the lot , not is it being relished. In the fitness of situation, why worry if the anguish of the mornng after a glorious evening can be handily overcome?

Since we have learnt to live with the fact that morality is a subjective thing - with serious time and space constraints, there is just a thin line between the victor and the vanquished. The social order is very strongly alligned towards 'never be apprehanded - no matter what you commit!'

It is not a case of 'motive haunting in motiveless malignity.' Thed same brilliant brains may aswell work a while more to re adjust the target audience so that it might satisfy the moral police as well.

It should not be stopped. It is working as an awareness program for unwanted pregnancy. Every woman has her own willingness for pregnancy and this kind of advertisement can help them. And if it could be misused than I think it is already in misused before the campaign comes.

Dear Jayant is the pills providing them freedom to sex freely, from my childhood I see these kind of add . It’s 32 years back when I was just 6 year remember MALA D  TVC on DD national channel  which was full of Indian social cultural & values. The pills main consumer /target are youngster and in the age of MTv, FTv, VH1 where media got too much freedom & glamour, bold and straight backdrop is justified. A pill is batter and personal option they have for their ignorance, because first time it’s ignorance second time mistake and then it’s  become blunder and blunder are like bad habits/drug addiction  very hard to get rid of.

Well, its a life's trend tht's enhancing such markets. Then its pretty good as atleast women know such proactive measures and thus avoid further issues ranging from Social to Emotional and Rational to Professional. Its not just of pregnancy of un-married gal rather, but it also revolves around those millions of women who want to excel their professional excellence which they cant aft having a child. While other women shd be proactive about protection as todays teens and youngster like ME are well aware of the facts before indulging in such physical actions.

I strictly believe that these adds educate the women who arent aware of such advanced sciences. Rather companies shd also follow the strategies to clear any doubts, myths and misunderstandings about these pills.

Kudos to both Unwanted - 72 and I-pill for being proactive and understanding the needs well before the late innings starts

No. But advertisement should be with complete information.Current advertisements are going in a  right way.Everybody who are opposing it,should understand that we are changing.Pre-marital and Post-marital sex are common. We are Prioritizing the child planning.

Of course not ! We don't want a country full of teenage mothers and unwanted children , do we? Not to mention, we're already bursting at the seams ...

Stopping the ads for contraceptives is not going to increase awareness about the consequences of unplanned/ teen pregnancies and unsafe sex and so on ....that needs a separate social awareness drive.

But what i do feel strongly is that the creative content of these ads should be tweaked to incorporate a sense of responsibility in the user.

Also a statutory medical warning that emergency contraceptives are not to be used like regular contraceptives should be included plus the fact that it advisable to consult a doctor before popping pills randomly.

I agree with Devi's point! And when coming to the kind of communication that the commercials are making, i feel that they should contain a clear cut disclaimer.

Because seeing these ads, people blindly in take the pills and later suffer some side effects! Its better we need to educate them that the pills need to be taken after consulting a doctor!

Dear Mr.Jayant You invited me in the discussion but I oppose your thought  “promoting unprotected sex”, I like to know what is protected sex, where the roll of sex is described and who did this.

I have great respect for sex, Lord SHIVA gave us SHIVLINGA the symbol we all spiritually worshiping, due to public discussion I do not explain the philosophy behind SHIVALINGA, but want to know why Lord SHIVA created Temples of Love "Khajuraho" and why founded the SHIVLINGA in tample , why Lord SHIVA teach us techniques of sex (The tantric sex).

Do not condemns sex and take it as taboo we all born through sex, it is our roots. If sex is physical it is natural and if it is mantel it become unnatural and everything that is unnatural creates problems it is by product we produced by going unnatural.

Mother is next to GOD but down the ages women have sacrificed their sexuality in order to please and keep "Him". For us(MEN) sex is pleasure and momentary but for women it is a nine month journey ands with ultimate Pain. I want every women liberate and ready to look into the depth of their female conditioning in order to rediscover the essence of their feminine energy, able to unveil our sensuousness, self-respect and dignity

I completely second, third and fourth Aditya, Ms. Kaladeen and Naushad sahab!!

The ads are necessary. What goes on behind your back will remain there come what may. You do not need eyes at the back to know about it but a little common sense that would open your eyes. These things will go on and will still be (rampant even) after we are gone!!

Why close your eyes to reality?? The ads can be made sharper and a better message can be puy through to the younger generation. Adultery is also on the rampage with close work proximities et al!! Lets be realistic about this. Accept what is in store. Man himself is the root of all evils and root of all good!! So lets stop pushinh the buck and make life better!!

Thanks for the referral Jayant!

If just stopping of ads would rid the society of all ills, it is nothing but  wishful thinking. In a population of over 2 billion and with 40% of it being uneducated, how is stopping of ads going to benefit ? IT WILL NOT. Gujarat has total prohibition in force for ages but has it helped. No ! My friends tell me it hosts the best booze parties.

Regulation is the key word rather than stopping of ads. The AAAI which is the advertising watchdog should set up another monitoring body alongwith eminent gynecs and psychatrists to oversee the publishing of such ads. Such industry bodies are extremely popular and effective in the US and UK.

Also removing it from the OTC category will only give room for further manipulation, price fixing and illegal dealings which will only lend to the whole process becoming unsafe.

The govt. has also got to run public service ads which highlight the contraceptives as a safer option rather than its misuse as an opportunity for illegal sex. It is high time an industry body like the USFDA is set up india.

Do you know there are many drugs like Vicks Action 500 which are banned in the US and Europe but they continue to be sold in India only because of our ignorance and lack of interest in demanding our rights.

Consumer awareness itself will be a far greater tool in controlling rather than banning or changing categories.

No the advertisement should not be stopped, but the way in which the message is delivered needs to be modified. It should be more towards having safe sex rather than depicting sex before marriage is a cool activity because of the availability of these pills.

Advertising Agencies and the Manufacturing companies should show moral responsibility towards the society rather than just increasing profits

I totally disagreed the thought of not advertising of Contraceptive pills, I take this thought as philosophy not as psychology because In a country having population problem like India have to mass market this kind of products and like developed countries Every Indian women must have option of conceiving or not.

Second thing that you pin pointing is misuse or overuse, I like to share the fact, In Punjab abortion and  testing for male/female  during pregnancy banned long ago and a hording/board showing  that the test is legal  offence cause imprisonment, in front of every nursing home/hospital/testing laborites’ is  legal requirement . People keep on doing these tests till now  and our so-called  doctors still doing abortions and doing this murders of female every day.

So I think who misuse/overusing these pills is not mature or responsible people don’t bother   of these, come what may they have to do so in spite of every effort to stopping them.

It shouldnt be stopped as it educates the masses that at least  some sort of emergency contraception is available at their disposal and prevents instances of unnecessary abortive measures especially for women.Potentiality of abuse lies in many advertised brands and customer education with proper information dessemination is the key for minimization of abuse.

The advertisements communicate a message. The content can be re formatted to also communicate caution, instead of becoming silent. It makes more sense to communicate better than to cease communicating altogether.

We would be naive to think that today's youth would stop having sex or slow down for that matter...

Then what would be better - secret abortions or Pill Protected safe sex ? Ya, the doctors would make merry on secret abortions.

I think its time we 'Grow Up' & stop thinking 50 yrs behind. Awareness always helps, no matter how direct it may be. The department thinking of discontinuing these Awareness Advertisements are either baised, ignorant or way behind times.

I strongly vouch they should go on...
