The era of recession has hit everyone in this nation. Should a person look for a better job role in this period?

Recession has been in the past as well. It is nothing but a testing phase of an individual. I go by the old saying " when the going gets tough, the tough gets going".

If a person is tough, has confidence and possesses knowledge, he will go ahead and look for a better job with a better pay (given that most companies have not given a  hike to its employees and also, they are cutting down their workforce.). However,  I am totally opposed to changing a job just for increasing the salary. The reason for changing a job should be either job security or if the candidate is competitive enough, for the sake of working in good projects.

Dear Sumit...

It has lot to do with mind set & passion ....

Monster of recession is hovering over everyone across the entire globe these days. The economic recession is a part of life which is unfortunately inevitable. In recession, a lack of passion soon shows up. The fear-cycle is corrosive. In times like these, individuals need to be more adaptable, creative and strategic. It's good to have options and preparation to be able to "make a living," and, hopefully, to experience success and financial security.

And also it would be advisable to plan your career strategy so that you effectively position yourself because things will change & you might land up with a better opportunity with the current employer. It's easy to slip into negativity (this is what I have learnt) when you are confronted with job loss or recession but at the same time awareness is the biggest factor & you should listen to yourself.....

It would be interesting to see what others say about this topic.....

No reason why a person should not be open to taking a job change during a recession. There could be many reasons for taking such a decision like threat of layoffs, company shutdown or just a fear that something could go wrong with the current job.

I too, do not agree that a job change should be made just keeping in mind the money aspect. There should be more to this decision. A person looking for a job change needs to be aware of his strengths and how these would benefit himself and the new organisation in the long run. Most people take on new jobs/ activities just looking at the challenges that face them onthe job front. Such people are normally the ones who stand out amongst the crowd.

Why not?

If there is a corporate or brand who has seen the vision to make its hay while the Sun still shines and is recruiting, the candidate should go ahead. Recession is a phase that corporates have experts employed with them to counter. There have been similar phases in the past as well but has it ever stopped progress?? Has it stopped us from breathing??

Making a situation work for you even in trying times is the ingenius of the individual! As Sumit has rightly said, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going!"

very rightly said sir (Dr. Varma), changing of job has nothing to do with recession. many companies fail to retain their employess even during non-recession time as everyone is looking for growth and opportunity. and if a person has the caliber to get into whatever he/she wants then recession isn't a big deal. and if the person fits the companies bill it will pay him for what he/she deserves.

Now market is on downward position. It is not necessary that if an employee leaving the previous job he/ she will get a proper job. It happens that left the job after huge research on job and joined another one but it is not compusory thar there will be a job satisfaction. The main reason to left the job is low salary  but salary is not everything ther must be a job satisfaction and itcomes when he/she doing job for a long time.

But due to the job cut one should get ready for each and every situation.

I dont think there is a 'Yes' or 'No' to it as it depends on the situation. For example, if the company is not doing well and there is a possibility of one's job being redundant, then one should look out for a change whereas if the company is going stable and one's is not likely to be redundant then one should stick back b'coz a konwn devil is better than unknown devil.

However, whatever be the situation and whichever spectrum one belongs to, one should definitely work out a PlanB as a fall-back option and work it parallely as part-time as the job cut would happen without prior intimation, if it happens. One should look for this Plan B opportunity in the recession proof industry to the extent possible.

Devi, your statement is 100% correct.  It is his/her constitional right. But what we are trying to brain storm is, a situation during recession. He/she is bound to be obsessed and develop fear psychosis.  The disturbed mind would encourage him to introspect and encourages to quit his job.  He needs encouragement to retain his job.  He/she who does not receive pink slip, retained in the organisation but confronted with irrational fear, is the aggrieved person considered, if I am right.  You may come back to me if I am to have different view on this.

I think changing job does not have much to do with recession. Recession or no recession, employees are always looking for better opportunities. Merely because of recession an employee need not  change his or her job. But having a job in hand may be a good strategy during recession just in case one gets laid off. Recession may be a good time to enhance one's skills so that one is valued more by the employer and it becomes difficult to lay him off.

I dont have any element of doubt in endorsing Mr. Gargi's views.  We should never become discouraged by the threat of jobloss.  Eventually getting enlightened and bear all the difficulties encountered will certainly lead to brighter opportunities and create better harmony with the employer.  This results in better recognition and emoluments.  A true, dedicated and sincere employee will always be proactive, learns his subject well and  behaves in a confident manner during his performance of duties.  He is  never under distress, whether it is recession or company in any other unfavorable situation.  The world is large and oppurtunities are abundantly available for such person to excel in their career.

I second Gargi on all the comments.

Though i think the points mentioned by Gargi and Sumit are valid to a certain extent, i think the focus here is on changing jobs or not during "recession". It is a palpable truth that a person would change jobs for his/her growth in terms of career and monetarily. But during this phase, trust of the employer on you, apart from skills is a vital factor in securing one's job.

If you change a job and the new company decides to lay off, you are in a more jeopardizing position of getting layed off. This is because a company would retain its experienced and trusted employees to a new one (In most cases). Even though you are looking for a profile that confirms with your requirements and not salary, it might post a threat to your job security.

Hence, i foresee changing job in these times precarious.
