Actually th equestion itself contain a "conflict" within. Architectural concept is done first for any project or building. Ut goes through a complex procedure of ammendements before finally approved. Structure comes next. Structural designer/engineer start his work base on approved architectural layouts/plan/elevation etc. Therefore, look & structure are although different but blended together to form a building. There might be conflicts, but those are merely on elevation that can be taken care easily by the structural engineer.

I do not want to side with either. But the fact is that both cannot go parallely.A building is conceptualised by Architect and the life is given by Structural |design. Not all arch design .s are practical .To be functional they need structural support. so both have to fuse at a point and then go together complimenting each other. Somertimes Arch designs are changed because it is practically impossible to construct with structural design for functional purpose it has been conceptualised. Both are equally necessary

I never support that architecture has no importance. I never agree that there is any feud or ego clash between engineer & architecture. In fact we all professionals know very well that both structural design & architectures are important. However you can appreciate that common people while building their houses normally ignore structural design. They never hesitate to spend more in obtaining consultancy on Vastu & architecture. But when question comes on structural design & quality construction, they leave it to mason as they feel consultancy on structural design is a waste. Result, a beutiful looking house turns uglier in few years. This debate should pinpoint the mindset of commoners. The common people seeking to build own house must be taught the importance of structural design. Architecture definitely give a beutiful look of their house where as structural design will make this beutiful house to last longer. I advised many that when you spend lakhs of rupees on constructing a house why to worryabout few thousand rupees for structuraldesign.

Structural design has prime importance for stability & life of the structure. Architecture is always secondary. If one can afford architecture along with structural design there is no problem but you cannot ignore structural design at any cost. First survive then think for your dressing

Without Architecture Design a St Engineer can plan With help of Exp & Books & can give St design & detailling of steel for High Rise Buildings. But Architects cant give St Design &drawings.

Structural Design will be done after u have the architecture drawings for reference.Structural Designer always refer an architect if there is any issue with spacings provided. Now a days architecture appearence of the building is also imp. This argument will never end.So its advisable that both architect and structural designer should share their views, so that buildings will become structurally as well as architecturally strong.

Yes Jaisai it has got to do more with structural design as with this the stability of the high rise building is considered and in high rise buildings, lateral loads become an increasingly dominant parameter for the planning and design of the whole building. Lateral stability systems are frequently fitted within the central core and services have to be carefully integrated with the structure.
And the principal criterias that are used in assessing building stability will be the drift and acceleration. Drift is simply the ratio of the building deflection over its height, and the critical parameter is usually inter-storey the floor to floor drift rather than total building drift. So considering all this i would go for Structural design...

for that heavy structure we should give preference to its structural design and not architecture as unless and until we design it correctly and economically it cannot withstand. Only then it can be shown as a landmark for our country.

I believe there is nothing to debate! Can you people imagine a Human body without skeletal structure to support from within? or just the skeleton with no flesh covering it? The idea is tht simple! If you've a beautiful face - its the sum of the aesthetics of your facial bones & the flesh covering it. And moreover like you need all the digestive & other systems within your body, you need all the MEP services also thru the building, to properly service it- without which there is nothing called a building!- be it single storied or 100 storied.

If building is desingned oversafe by structural designer with out caring for proper space planning and functional utility for the user it will not be appreciated by the user. So the argument of safe building does not hold good.

I agree that both the features structural and architectural are important. Both are inseparable. Here we are discussing about importance of one over the other in high rise. Architecture is a wide term. It means space planing and outer appearance of building.Structural designer has to take into account the architechural features. We can not have a building where no arch. features are there. For any Arch. detailing structural design is possible but sometimes it is costly. Another factor which is being missed by all is extrenal Arch. features are not important for a high specially if it is 100 floors. As nobody will be able see external features of such high rise building. In such case internal space planiing is important along with safe strutural arrangement

Dear Mr. Dikshit, kindly enlighten me in which project you have seen the structural design of a building be it high rise or low rise has been done before the architectural design.

Dear Contributors, Both structural design and architecture are important for land mark buildings. Structural design is one of the most important but the job of the structiral designer is to provide sturdy and fail safe design as per the requirements of the architect. So both the things have to go hand in hand and we cannot propose to compromise one for the sake of the other. It is just like asking that who is more imporatant Mother or Father for a perfect family, so I think you all will appreciate that in both the scenarios we cannot limit ourselves to one particular aspect.. Hence both are IMPORTANT equally.

When it comes to these Landmark Buildings, Both the Architect and structural Engineer are Impartant. Both sit together can produce Excellent Structures for the Admiration of Everyone. It is nice if we can avoid such a debate to whom we place the Large Chair. Instead, it would be better if we keep Two similar chairs for both.

My take on the issue is - Architecture & Structural Design are two different verticals which are equally important. They cannot be compared. A high rise building should be safe and stable - Responsibility of Structural designer. Also a high rise building should have perfectly conceived utility network and space usage plan let apart the esthetics (a tall building without a proper facade may ruin the image of the entire city globally) - Responsibility of the Architect. A comparison b/w these to verticals don’t make sense at least to me.

i agree with vivek singh ji. there is no option to vote for architecture. architecture will be the guiding factor for the structural design for such buildings. it should be a brilliant combination of architecture excellence, asethetics and structural design. most beautiful structures in the world are a combination and team efforts of engineers and architects together. architectural marvels can sustain only with mutual understanding of design and structure.
