Every year we hear about crores of rupees sanctioned  and utilised for medical equipment procurement. But the sad part after procurement there is no qualified personnels in govt. Hospital & Medical Colleges to ensure that the equipment are functional. It is a common fact that any one who goes to a govt hospital is referred to outside private labs for investigations, mentioningthat the hospital facilities are not fucntioning. Crores of equipment lie unused in the Operation Theatres, ICu etc. Shouldnt there be some monitoring done on these equipment whcih are procured at huge cost, and ensured that these are put into use, instead of only investing in procurement every year and again.

Hi Renjit, interesting debate. I agree with you many government hospitals are not utilizing the latest equipment to its fullest. The major reason being lack of proper knowledge. So one way to change this is to post few biotechnology experts in the government to make the best use of them.

Thanks....

Government generally gives "Annual Maintenance Contract" for every machinery they buy. Even if they appoint bio-medical engineers to maintain the equipment, the policy of giving AMC will continue, as the bureaucrats would not like to take chances with the inmates!

Actually if you think Bio Medical Engineers would be able to or rather should be allowed to repair / dissemble / tamper with the equipments you are talking about, the answer is no. The equipment worth crores like specialized diagnostic and imaging eqpmt, radiotherapy equipment etc should only be repaired by authorized representatives of the manufacturing firm or company. Yeah BMEs would be able to take care of the smaller equipment like ECG machines etc, but the costlier items should be repaired only under AMC / CMC. This can be done by the maintenance department or the Store and Purchase department also.
