In a recent incident, La Martiniere Boys school, Kolkata's one 13 year old student committed suicide after getting cained by the principal of the school.

The principal of the school has appologised for his mistake and has agreed to face the consequences. He, however, said the caning should not be linked to the death of the class VIII student Rouvanjit Rawla on February 12 though he also said that he just gave the boy "two mild strokes" and the case is getting pulled too far.

But, Ajay Rawla, father of the boy, said he had not received any apology and did not know if the Principal had apologised to the Board. He also said, "If kids are going to benefit for not getting beaten and humiliated and victimised, I think we have achieved a lot. I have no reason to see, to believe that this man (the principal) has any remorse. I have never any apology from him."

So users, do you think corporal punishment in educational institutions be made a criminal offense in India?

Yes, it should be. Punishing small children for mistakes is considerable, but beating them to death is a crime. It should be make a criminal offence so that  people think twice before raising hands on children. Or else there is no need to cry & pity on the deaths of the children who died bcoz of punishment.

Think Properly....

Thanks for the referral Ms Sarika.

Punishment and Praise are both part of life. Just like when at getting punished the student or any one else feels bad, at the same time getting praise makes them feel better. Students are given punishment not because some one feels good in punishing them (However, it is sad but true that there are some sadist element also). Punishment should not be be made a criminal offence, but the form of punishment should be decided, physical punishment should be discouraged as much as possible.

Yes, all kinds of brutalities on the children in the name of making them desciplined should be banned and the violators, be it teachers or parents, should be treated as criminals.

Yes, It sholuld be banned , because it is the act of by a weak personality . The person who is issuing punishment is not able to understand children psychology.

One  should have the  judgementability to apply love, fear, toughness rationally.

The CP never give the positive  result.

No one has the right to physically assault another. There are much better ways of teaching a person than ophysical punishment.

Corporal punishment in educational institutions must be made a criminal offence in India...definitely since as Mr.Ali ahmed has quoted punishment and praise are part of life...Educational institutions must introduce corporal punishments so as to keep an eye on the defaulters or miscreants...Also to note that these punishments must be on a smaller scale...likewise it's preferably good enuf to coach and teach the students by way of moral values too...In India, most of us dont go by the LAW so it really wont matter if at all corporal punishment is introduced in the institutions. The need of the hour is to check on these LAWS so as to ensure these are followed regularly, thereby promoting corporate values like punctuality, discipline and academic grade....

inflicting any kind of punishment associated with physical pain should be condemned. Human beings are not animals therefore minor children should also be treated with proper care and love. However punishing the students to improve their behaviour in such a manner that would put impressions on the fertile minds of the children be in such a form which cause reprimend not physical pain. Punishing with love will lead the child to improve him/her.

Yes sarika, it should be banned & made criminal offence, not only at educational institution, i will go a step ahead at homes also. Afterall, children has got their own life, we should allow them to blossom on their own. They shld be allowed to make mistakes & learn from them.  Unfortunately, because of social & economical pressure children r becoming targets to vent their frustration by punishing the child in form of abuse, beating, canning for the only reason they r notable to hit back or defend themselves against injustice.

Both parents & teachers r under the impression that by inflicting corporal punishment they r correcting/discipline the children. Rather the fear of punishment instilled in children  will make them disciplined & more responsible.

As a famous poet has quoted that "there r no bad children or bad dogs, but yes there r bad parents & bad masters"

In a civilised society of today, nobody can support Corporal Punishment. One may fill pity for students in lower and upper schools in India, where CP is practiced.

Children are children and they are always going to do things that is considered wrong in adult eyes. That does not mean that you beat them up for their mistakes! They should be explained as to why they are wrong and of course, if the bad behavior continues, then they should be punished. But if we want to teach our children that violence is abhorred and that they must never raise their hand to strike another, then we ourselves must not be hypocritical and do that very thing.

sarika when british ruled india they gave a phrase ''spare the rod and spoil the child" today in their own country corporal punishment is banned. even a teacher or parent cannot shout upon a student.whereas the convent schools left behind by british in india freely use the cane. our students are not as rouges and indisciplined like american school students, who in spite of bringing guns and drugs to school are not corporally punished. whereas in our country even good studious students are punished because they could not arrange a laptop for the teacher, a teacher comes drunk to school and beats up his students, because they object to his drunken behavior. i strongly feel it should be made a non bailable criminal offence, and the statement of fellow students must be considered a vital clue for deciding punishment.

I think so.

No one denies that wrong doers should be punished ; this is true for adults , it should be true for children also , both at home and at school.

The debatable point is CP ; is this justified ?

I would say no , for the following reasons :

1.  It can be abused ; depending on the person inflicting the punishment , the degree can range from mild to fatal !

2.  It is degrading ; using violence to correct a person , whether a child or an adult , implies that the culprit is not amenable to any other form of correction. Let us consider the case of habitual offenders in other areas ; so many drivers are habitual offenders ; do we start CP for them too ? If we decry third degree methods for criminals at the hands of the police , we should also ban CP in schools.

3.  In the long run , CP builds up resentment in the victim , and a sense of defiance ; if a child gets punished several times , the sense of shame is replaced by a streak of rebellion ; the child offends in order to show that he does not care for the authority who is going to punish him.

4.  If we agree to CP in schools , does it mean that we follow such measures in the home also ? How many of us parents , who agree to CP in schools , discipline our child at home in the same manner ? If we do not do it at home , how can we justify it in school ?

When the teachers cross a limit , when  punishing a child it may be considered a criminal offence. The teacher can not hit a child with the intention of hitting and hurting him/her. If the intention is to correct a child and without anger or vengeance it is not to be conceived as a corporal punishment. I agree with you Sir.

I don't think so. Punishing students helps in keeping them desciplined. If we let the students free as in western countries, they will also become like today's Americans. Fully indisciplined. And there should be no ego factor in students for this. After all, their teachers are beating them. Noone else. This relation of teacher and student should be the first lesson taught to them in schools.
