Darpan, even I would advise the developer to test the product himself first but having a specialized testing person is best because if you test your own design, however, you might be less willing to admit its deficiencies. Developers can be too willing to dismiss user complaints or problems as minor or unrepresentative, when in fact the test indicates the need for a deep redesign. Also, developers can get so caught up in their own theories about how users ought to behave that they forget to test for cases in which people behave differently.

Yes -- Developers should test their own work before giving it to the Testers. This is ensure the correctness and to reduce our rework after testing. This is must and should be followed even in a project that are small.

yes off-course they should, as this will otherwise increase undue burden on the testers.

Hi Raji

I agree to you and I dont meant to say that we should rule out the testers if the developer have done the testing but before a module is released to be tested by the testers there should be some level of testing that needs to performed by the developer itself. Else we will be giving developers liberty to code any thing and then the testers had to come back to them stating that they have done it worng and then we need to go back to the development cycle again and that could have serious impact on the project schedule. So to make sure that if we are posting a task as compleet there should not be any bugs from our side that we forsee developers shd do the Unit testing.

And even I am a strong beliver that we shd even go for a TDD so that the developers first write the unit tests and then go in for the development so that they know that the code they are going to write has to pass the following senarios.

I disagree with you Vijayanand, developing and testing are very different. Its the job of the tester to demolish what has been created by the developer. Both has different mindset and approach and way they assume. Tester tries hard with different assumptions to find mistakes, find holes in developers assumptions, and flaws in their logic.

When testing the developers will use the same assumption as he used when writing a code. This shall achieve 100% code coverage.

Most of the developers consider testing as a painful job, even they know the system well, due to their negligence they tend to skip many testing  paths, as it's a very painful experience for them.
