New vogue in the internet is Social Networking Sites. Many companies are using such sites for Social Media Advertising and increase network base. So should employees be allowed to surf such websites during working hours in the offices?

If not otherwise required for "business" purposes .. this may not be allowed.

In some Govt. deptts this has been barred. And rightly so.  There may not be any argument to allow "social sites" as these are very personal in all purposes.

Yes of course. Whenever I get free time I spend it on social networking, it rejuvenates me and also help to express my views and most importantly I never allow it to affect my work.

Employees should be allowed to surf such sites, as they provide a platform to reduce the effort in doing their job. These sites are very useful especially to people who are working in research field.

i think what nilesh has told is right.

it will help u in expanding your business plus  if same profession person meet in social sites then they can share their knowledge and help to each other.

but, the time restriction has to be there.

i think lunch time is the best for that

I believe that use of such websites will help in increasing the network base for the organization. But there should be some limitations in terms of usage hours and who should be allowed to surf such websites. As every employee may not be involved in selling directly but the organizations need to identify sales driven employees who are responsible to bring business into the oraganization.

Today many people log on to these social networking sites and spend most of the time doing unproductive tasks and that is what hampers the entire trend in which they should go about and what then becomes a bigger concern is performance for that person leading to various problems so I do not support the ideology

I personally don't agree to employees surfing on social networking sites during working hours. However, they are free to do so during their lunch period or after working hours. Not every line of duty has need to be on computer while working. Some may argue that if their work is up to date they should be allowed to use the internet to access social  networking sites. If this is the case, it is not fair to other employees who because of their field of work can never have time to access the internet. Our office has banned all employees from chatting during working hours. Anyone caught doing this face the consequences.

Social networking sites are nothing but additions which will deviate the focus of the employee. Thus they shouldn't be allowed during the working hours...
