Employers who make Internet facilities available to their employees are majorly worried about bandwidth usage, security and commensurate return of investment, among other things. If the designed speed and efficiency is not being achieved, there is always a justified cause to worry. It has been shown that monitoring of Internet use helps to increase security, improve productivity, reduce employee misbehavior, competitive information leaks, and liability risks. However, it must be managed with tact lest it becomes discouraging to employees.pLS.PARTICIPATE IN THIS DEBATE AND MAKE IT LIVELY

An employer has the right to monitor Internet usage of any employee. Websites may contain inappropriate content or links to sites that contain viruses. An employer has the right and responsibility to ensure their computers are used in an appropriate manner and as free from viruses as possible. An employer further has the right to expect that its computers will be used entirely (or nearly) for company use. An employee may feel that it's okay to use computers at work for actions he may not think of doing at home. After all, as the old adage goes, "it's not my property." The employee needs to remember that he has been entrusted with the use of a computer to make his job easier and more efficient. Employers should also be able to monitor and track emails being sent, chat rooms being visited, and instant messages being sent. The reason behind this could be as simple as wasting time or as serious as passing company confidential information to other people. Employees who send instant messages instead of working are stealing from the employer. However, most employees spend at least a part of their day on the Internet for personal matters. Some employers state that up to thirty minutes of personal computer time is acceptable. Other employers state that the computer is not to be used for personal business at all. Whatever the policy at the company, it is the employee's responsibility to abide by it honestly. While it would be impossible for an employer to block every site that is visited, an employer should block sites such as shopping, pornographic, and similar sites. Many employees have an employee on the Information Technology staff who logs all sites visited and determines if it should be blocked. This is entirely appropriate. An employer may also state that employees are restricted from downloading software and games onto their desktop. This is also acceptable. Untested software can wreak havoc on a computer and the employer then has the added expense of replacing the computer and cleaning off the old one. Generally, that is done and the computer is distributed to another employee. If an employee has many games on their computer, his productivity will probably decrease. He will play games and leave his work untouched or pass his work off to other employees. Every employee handbook should state that he will expect no privacy in his Internet usage. Everything the employee does on a computer should be open to inspection, review, and correction, if necessary. An employer pays a large amount of money for its computer and information structure and should expect compliance from the employee in any rules created.

If use of internet is for benefit of company and also for development of skill and information then all right otherwise passing time and doing business for own by an employee is not good.

"There should be a good IT administration in the company so, that there will be no need for monitoring an employee as they were restricted to much extent via group policies managed by administrator. so, management can be assured that there data is safe but still some monitoring is necessary as the employees are not supposed to do some personal work in the office so, this way they will concentrate on there work but for there leisure there should be some cyber-cafe facility in the office"

Earleir, it was the practice that

those at the top management level

only were provided access to internet.

Others had to use INTRANET for

transactions within and between staff of

other branches of the company and limited

access to other company's web sites.

The reason was that, in spite of having best firewalls,

the local servers are succeptible to virus attacks

and likely to hang or breakd down every other day

if open for everyone to have global internet access.

Also there were rules that juniors mark copy to

the manager concerned for all e-mail emnating from them.

In matters of importance the e-mails were allowed to go

only after the draft is seen and approved by the manager.

Also it was the practice that business matter is prepared

in a formal/official format which is then send attached

instead of simply putting these, wording and phrasing

in a casual manner in the text part of the mails.

A copy of these are saved in related folders both in

digital form as well as in hard copies, for future

reference.

It should not happen that earlier correspondences are

missing when an employee leaves the company.

Important messages are sent encrypted only by the

top managers who are authorised to have the encryption

code.

For lower staff, no recordable drives are provided to

safeguard against pilfering of information.

Only common printers and FAX machines that can store copy

of printed data are allowed to be used by the junior staff.

From what we hear nowadays in the media etc., it appears,

that no such practices are being followed even in the

topmost offices of the country, leave alone other ones.

Its necessary to keep monitoring on a selective basis as business information can be leaked through email; secondly there are also instances where the individuals spend more time on unproductive internet usage. Left unchecked, the company could be in for suprise.

I think it's a bad idea. An Employer just need to verify whether the employee is working the job assigned to him correctly in time or not. An employer hasn't any right to put an eye on the privacy of the employee.

No employer has no right to invade the privacy of the employee. It is highly unacceptable in today's knowledge driven economy.
