A recent news report highlighted the fact that only 48.3% of Indian children in Class 1 could read the English alphabet, even in big capital letters.

http://cms.mumbaimirror.com/portalfiles/1/79/200811/Image/hindi_or_english100.jpg

The annual education audit by the NGO Pratham showed that Gujarat had the worst record: only 25.3% of Gujarati children could read capital letters in English, and only 8% could read English sentences.

To rectify this, and join the globalisation bandwagon, the Gujarat government proposes to teach English in Class 1. Other states are making similar moves.

What do you think people is this the right move, Should English be taught to children over mother tongue? share your views

Many of our leaders might not like it but the naked truth is that English is an international language spoken and understood throughout the world. The poor children should get equal opportunities and that can be achieved if they learn english from an early age and extra effort should be put to see that they too get the benefit of learning, grasping and understanding english from an early age. If English is taught late to the child, the child would be "thinking" in his/her mother tongue and any reading or writing that the person does in English requires a mental translation to the mother tongue. This slows down the person, leaving the person disheartened and the person has to make a super-human effort to move to English. Also, English has become the great binder for Indians that Hindi was never be able to achieve. Every Indian who manages to become a global player is thankful that his/her education had not been restricted by national jingoism to Hindi. Hence, I believe that teaching English as early as Ist is a step in the right direction.

One should be proficient in mother tongue and reach for other languages and this also will improve the reading and writing skill. Good in one language is the ability to read and write in one language more the speaking any language. Strong foundation helps you learn any language and not only English. Learning in mother tongue also builds your creativity and imagination. I have personally seen people who have learnt English from Class III are much more logical, have better communication skills than many of those who have learn English from Class I. Its because, if one is fluent in his mother toungue, then spoken english fluency can be easily achieved in the mother tongue. Once that is established, learning a second language becomes much easier

Whether we accept it or not, English is a must for all of us to survive in the competitive world. In the Indian context  we have our reservations to accept Hindi as our national language but many of us may not have any objection to accept English as link language. Tragedy is that many of us cant understand Hindi the most spoken language of the nation, we all can understand English. When it comes to the regional languages, if you confine to your mother tongue, you are confining yourself.

English is a lingua franca‘(or working language, bridge language, vehicular language) is a language systematically used to make communication possible between people not sharing a mother tongue, in particular when it is a third language, distinct from both mother tongues. you want to exist internally you have to be able to communicate... unfortunately there are people who mistake the term Language with the term Culture! they feel if one learns English they are forgetting their cultural background... With that mentality what do those people expect by not being employed... bloody learn English!! South Africa has 11 official languages including English but only 5% of people speak English as their first language... Sadly enough this is the truth!

LAnguage is a mode of expression. To ensure we communicate without misinterpretation or rather reduce the hurdles in communication, it is a necessity to upskill ourselves in the language which is common to that area/ domain. I mean to say that in rome do as the romans do, i myself hailing from GOA have learnt to understand and communicate in marathi, hindi, oriya, bengali, ladakhi, punjabi, assamese in varying degrees based on the requirement of area/ domain. So what is the challenge if english is the globally accepted mode of communication? before english it was latin? times change

The position of English today as a global language cannot be over-emphasised. It is no more the language of the colonialists. It is everybody's language now and, therefore in a country such as ours, it is spoken and used in a myriad of ways. Keeping this in mind,English should be taught to children through educational institutions as all higher learning will be carried out via the medium english..

Yes. Whether we accept it or not, English is the only language the world understands. You cant keep yourself aloof from the vibrant world. Whatever may be your emotional attachment towards the mother tongue, you have no other choice other than learning english because most of the literature on any technology is in English. We must live to the relaity. At the same time, you need not sacrifice the mother tongue. In addition to which allow your child to learn English to understand the world.

Being nostalgic for any identity regarding culture, civilization or language is a good thing, but it always slowdown the speed of your development. As far as the language problem in developing country like India is concern this all has been created by the politicians and politics is playing major roll in this regard. Its also true that not a single ethnic group or identity of the world could accept any imposition or hegemony of other identity without any reason. But as far as the English language is concern it must be taught as a mother tong to every child of a developing country because in the contemporary world there is no single language containing as vast knowledge base as English language.

English today has become the language of the world and I strongly favor the argument that English should be taught to children even over the mother tongue, you know what we suffer in our country is such type of narrow minded fanatic notions that have cheated India for generations and proved to be a hinderance in the growth of the nation.English teaching to children will prove to be a rise of new generation, a transformation that our country badly seek for.For me mother tongue is a symbol of my nativity and my roots, but still i would choose the path of development and development comes through being flexible and socializing with the world and for that we must prepare our children to rule the world. We are the children of Bharat and no one can prevent us from moving ahead.

What is the definition of a mother tongue? AFter all you cant even talk when you are born. is it the language your mother uses to comunicate with you as a child? An illiterate mother, to what extent she will teach you a language? Or is it the language you use to comunicate with your friends, neighbour and the people surrounding You? Suppose if you are born in a land of dumb people and only yoour mother speaks a language then what is your mother toungue? or if your mother is dumb and the people around you speak a language then what is your mother toungue? Why all this fuss about a language?

We require a language to comunicate with others effectively, and if the people surrounding you do not know the language you speak then you need to learn their language or they need to learn your language to communicate effectively. If you want to study the llierature in another language or want to be a science student then you need to learn the language in which scientific literature is published need to be learnt. You have lot of literature in English and most technical books and research results are published in English Language. Now if you want get benifited from these books and literature either you need to study and master English language or you need to get these translated to your own language. Here comes the economics: Which is cheaper? Learning English or getting these translated and publishing in your own language and effordability of such expenses. Wehter you like i tor not we becaME slaves of british because of our own people and ultimately we became an indipendent Nation. We lerant English in the process. The british also learnt the local Language for ruling us. In the bargain they not only translated our literature in to English, They published dictionaries english-Local languages and did a real service to us.  Is practcal to spend lots of money in translating technical books and adding new words barrowed from english and other languages to our own languages which our mother do not about. We have other preiorities, that are very important. Building economy, improving the economic status of a large percenage of poor people, providing social security to all and so on. Learn your language, learn as many languages as you can and afford, dont hate any language.

Language is a means of comunication. Comunicate culture through literature, Comunicate Science and Scientific findings and so on. One need to learn all languages in the world if he wants to understand and get benifitted by the culture of other languages. Or read literature from other cultures tarnslated in to his own languages, if available and propelry translated. To make available books from other languages translated in to ones own mother toungue, first of all some one should have knowledge of both the languages. Does that mean that person who learns another language and translates literature in to his mother tongue for the benifit of his fellowmen should become outcast to his fellowmen because he has learnt a language other than his mother tongue. Culture of another linguistic society can be best learnt by learning that language first and then mix with other society observe, practice and read about that socity. Hating another language only means refusing to learn and widen ones knowledge and refusing to be accomodative. People who ruled this country did learn language of this country by mixing with our people first, were able to make us their slaves. Our forefather had to slog and give their lives to get freedom.

If you want to gain from Scientific books and literature you should necessarily know the laguage in which they are available If you are able to master the languages in which these knowledge is available then only you can learn better. Not by reading translations.

English need to be learnt because most scientific works are published in that language. The assumption made while preaching that one should learn mother toungue first or education should be provided only in ones mother toungue is that the child will become proficient in mother toungue very fast and all the cultural and scientific literature is or could be made available in mother toungue. There are 1000's of languages in India of which less than scores of laguage is recognised as laguages and according to which the states haave been reorganised. Idea was in future importance should be given to learn in these languages and efforts should be made to make available scientific and cultural literature in these languages in those regions where these languages are spoken. But what is happening now. people are fighting on the issue of language. Maharastara want to divide in to more states Vidharbha, Konakani Areas and the rest of Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh in to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka into Maharastra Karnataka, Hyderabad Karnataka, old Mysore State, Tulu Nadu, Kodavas.

All this talk about language issues is only Political and political ambitions and aspirations. Everyone wants to become Chief Ministers, more the states more Cm's Every beurocarat wants to become Chief Scretary, more states and more number of CS. More Distrct means more Collectors and so on. Thus people are not fighting for Socio economic development they are fighting for getting power in to their hands, every one wants to be a king. The new type of Pallavas, kadambas, Cholas, Chalukyas, Marathas, Rastrakootas, and I dont know how many. These politicains want to disintegrate the country at any cost Just to enjoy power. History is repeating.

So wake of common man preach and accept universal brotherhood learn as many languages as possible and read and speak as many languages as posible. Art has no language boundaries, try to enjoy art in any language as from your own culture. Your health will then improve, you will be able to lead a peacefull and enjoyable life. Prevent people from fighting on language and relegion issues. They are all Deshdrohi's.

Well, english is an International languege and i agree with mr. Ganta sripathy that english should me toughtfrom KG which will give strong base and good command over english.

English should get the preference as much as education is concern, ofcourse mothertounge is very important but it is not required to teach as childrens learn it from their house itself.

Indian students should not lack behind only due to poor english knowledge when they have to face world.

If given a strong english base in acadamic years it will be easy to communicate for indians when they interact globally.

If you want our future generations to be successful in this globalised world, they should be proficient in English & may be in Chinese also!

Being proficient means to be familiar & using the language as early as possible. But its the family's and society's responsibility to make sure future generations doesn't grow up 'cultureless'.

Striking the balance is vital.

Learning mother tongue is a must. But side by side even English has to be taught from the beginning. The reason being in this growing age of globalization, one cannot expect to study in mother tongue till a particular class and then move on to English later on. Too much effort is needed by the child in order to make this move. Just by studying English, I do not believe we won't be knowing our culture. Culture, I believe, is something which we learn at home and not taught in the classroom.

Now coming to the topic of being able to understand each other in mother tongue, do you really need to go to school to learn to understand in mother tongue. If so, it cannot be the mother tongue at all.Even an uneducated person will be able to understand in his/her mother tongue.

How much ever the regional fanatics fight over the local language, I still believe that one has to be proficient in English. But they should also be taught the regional language of that region.

You know that english is the official language in India as well as internationally, it has got such a dual importance in a human life. As far as local language is conserned its importance is as if its word meaning and there fore its usage is restricted to the local area. Start english from fourth standered is the proceedure followed by our predesessoers long before, it was a period of restricted movement by an individual, movement of a person is well restricted within the local area. But that is not the position now, lot of developments took place with regard to communication, travel and living style. Right now people are moving freely any where universally. As such importance of english is more when compared to local language, further study of local language can be without being taught, it will be taught by the local area movement, my daughter is a classical example for that, our mother moyher tongue is konkani and the local language is malayalam, she is attending play school but studying 3 languages at time, she is only 3 years old. Konkany she studying at whome without being taught aprt form malayalam and english. What I am going to say is that mother tongue can be studied without being taught and considering the importance of english language it will be very good decision to start english from standered 1.

Learning mother tongue is a must.

Though English is the most uncouth language with no basic written rules; in the phonetic forms of its alphabets, in the combination of alphabets in forming words, with four separate forms for every alphabet for writing and printing, with same letter pronounce differently in different words, in forming singular and plural forms, in the  usage of vowels and compilation of words into sentences etc., it is still worthwhile to learn English for some more years in our own interest to continue in the top notch of unavoidable process of globalization.

Society is a very complicated phenomenon. On top of it if the citizen cannot communicate with each other let alone learn modern science subjects which are all exposed through English, then it is wise to learn English as the unifying language of a Nation. There are no advanced text books or subject books available in local languages. Even if one decides to learn ones own mother tounge later on when one grows understanding complicated processes will become difficult for everyone those who decides to stick to mother tougne. India is one example, even the government cannot solve the problem of all inclusive symmetrical processes. It becomes different markets for differnt clusters, starting with those who speak different languages. A homogeneous market is a necessary criterion for proper development and probably learning English early on life is the only soltution. There is no other choice left open for us.

Yes English should be taught right from primary School. In my openion apart from Engilshi children should have the option to chose and learn more languages. In a country like ours it is not worth while spending money on translating or writing technical books in local language. We have too many languages and where is the money required to translate all technical books and literature in to mother tongue when we have at least 20 -100 languages in this country. It is necessary to have one common language and one should learn that language right from primary school so that he  or she masters it nearly to the level of native language. To day we dont speak or write in our own mother tongue properly. If watch TV Channels some of the nachors do not speak their mother tongue properly and as result children who watch such programmes also follow these people. We have other priorities for spending like providing basic aminities to people and building economic infrastructure. preiority shuld be learn your mother tongue properly and laso learn English so that you are not deprived of an opportunity to read technical books and literature in English. Try to learn as many languages as posible. Dont hate any language.

Yes it should be taught from earlier classes there is no harm in it. But one need to consider the situation of teachers and parents also, are they in position to teach english from early classes. As this will not only impact the students in cities but also in remote villages where, changing things overnight may not be possible. Now it’s up to scientist and doctors to decide weather a child brain would able to capture three different languages at same time (Hindi, English and regional language). If all these problems dealt well  then there is no problem in it.

Friends,

The importance of the issue and the limited window with which we are looking at this issue brings me back although can not even say how many answering read my earlier comment.

People who are talking of English before mother tongue need to know a simple fact. If Germans or Russians or French had succeeded in gaining control to a larger chunk of land mass the language of choice would have been German or Russian Or French and who knows future may change it yet again yet the language of your mother is not reflected through commercial  or expansionist tendencies. Thus feel there is no need to link the two.

A child's first requirement remains to effectively interact with mother so let us not try to change laws of nature. may we say.

If we don't know what is our Identity then what will informs others about u. English is only a foreign language but it does not mean that it will be replaced by our Mother Tounge. We should understand that we only gave importance to this language because we are more globalized now and we have to communicate through this language. We should teach our children that first comes our mother then any one else. Like this First comes our mother tounge then any languages.

I agree that English to be learnt if necessary but it should never dominate our mother tongue or our national language.I feel pity to say that most of us can't control speaking in english even with our indians. speak in

wherever we goes we have to communicate with others. mostly nowadays English became a medium for communicating but wherever we stay at least in home we should speak our mother tongue. our generation culture changing . its the parents who have to take care about the language. some people think that only English language have its standard. its wrong.eg:- when you study like bang lore o working there when the people talk we wont be able to understand but we feel something strange and we feel if we were able to speak that language too. we must be proud about our mother tongue

Once that is established, learning a second language becomes much easier

you should appreciate the need of local language education more than anyone being in envoirnment. just check out the nursery rhymes of any non english language it mirrors, the nature, and values of her people thats why mother tongue or local language becomes relevant. english should be there longside. that too at a later stage.

understand what i am saying, english can be taught along with the mother tongue(state language) but not instead. at preschool level it is best to learn only mother tongue, as it puts in the value, english nursery rhymes if you see are all violent, sexually oriented, while all non english nursery rhymes are about local envoirnment, or some common sense issues.this allows the child to have a balance.

english is just a language for communicating. It doesn't make any one Superior, or Intelligent, or anything. Japan, Germany, France, are few examples about non-english speaking countries that are doing great things among the world.

English is a must if you say so, but when we say mother tongue it is the language of the state where you live in. when you are in France you learn french, if you are in karnataka you learn Kannada. that's it.

One need to define the mother toungue properly in todays context. Take for example metro cities like Bangalore. There are people from Tamil Nadu. Kerala, Andhra Pradesh as well as Northern India living in Bangalore for over may be 100 years. Most Farmers in Rural Bangalore District are from Andhra Pradesh (Tigala Community and Reddies). Their use of Teelugu is limited to their house or whenever they travel to their Native State if at all they visit native state. Their children are born and braught up in Bangalore, their friends and neboughers speak kannada, they comminicate with neighbours in Kannada and do business in kannada. What is their mother toungue? Mother Toungue is a language that they can undestand, read, write easily and communicate with people for business, friendship and other purpose easily, read the literature in that language and enjoy  and one can chose a language in which he is profiecient and confortable and therefore need not be the language spoken by his mother or father. A child starts communicating with the mother and then with others in his household and then with neighbours and then with others in the society for the purpose of develloping friendship and business ot to enjoy literature in a language. Medium of instruction has to be only mother toungue has no justification of what so ever. A migrant citizen cannot expect to have medium of instruction in his native language and it also not true that only when the children are educated in their mother toungue they will become successfull accademically and later in life. All this hue and cry about mother toungue is just politics. One need not spend to much of his time on such issues. Learn as many languages as posible and make friendship with all language people. You will find life interesting then.

Agree with Parwati, and would like to add,

There is no point in talking in language of Either OR. Each segment has their own set of demands and they should be met. In simple language addition forever is preferred over reduction by most. So let us not forget that here...Yes the timing to start a language can be assessed by domain experts.

1. Mother tongue is essential for culture tradition and sense of belonging to roots to exist. Every citizen has a right to choose this language and must be allowed this way.

2. National Language is important to be able to communicate with fellow citizens. In any case this ought be mandated for all jobs without choice. This is one subject where strict adherence is necessary to be called a nation. We should not extend democracy to this subject and yet want outsiders to respect. The nation first feeling should not be a subject of unending debate. And here we can settle for Hindi or Sanskrit. Sanskrit I suggest because it is as close to southern languages as northern and is a more scientific language.

3. International Language is required to transact business with rest of the world and this is where English is fulfilling its role and must continue.

Most Indians are already using three languages although there exists large number who know even more.

English should not be taught instead of mother tongue, it can be taught longside but if we are having playschools, then the regional language should be taught, until the child comes to 1st, after which english can be introduce, the success can be comepared with the KVS students.  this strenghtens our cultural identity, and nationalistic spirit, the language mind you should be regional and not english/hindi.

From the small exposure to the foreign clients, I have seen that the people in Korean Region, UAE, Iraq, and especially Japan and China, speak very precise English with minimized accent and exaggerations, and at a slower rate of speech. Their Language sounds crisp, clear, and just enough to convey the message. I had a chatter with one my clients( I pray my boss isn't on toostep!),  they said that exhaustive english is taught only when there is a need for it. Else, they focus more on subjective knowledge gathering, and decoding of the global information in their own mother tongue.

She asked me a question and I was dumb on it. She asked ," How many Hindi wesites can you name? and English?" , " I know 100s of sites in Japanese."

Does anyone around have any answer to that...

Handy knowledge of English is enough. And if the child feels attracted, his instincts will teach him better.

Otherwise putting an imposed foreign language ahead of ours, right from the grassroots, only can weaken our own integrity and respect for our National Sentiments.

" To be a global leader, one must take pride in what he is, and where he belongs. Are the children being allowed this prestigious honour?"

I think able to communicate is a must for any job now a days and companies are hiring from diverse backgrounds from all over the world so learning English is a neccessity to be able to survive at your job.

But you need your mother tounge to communicate with your parents and local people so you need it right from your childhood. Without your mother tounge you can't survive from the childhood..

So to sum up, first priority should be mother tounge and second priority should be English because it is the global language now a days.

Mother tongue connects with mother and mother land. For any person mother and mother land are most important wchich connects with customs, culture etc  ultimately leading to avoidance of frictions in family life.

Hindi national language , which is followed by most of the people in the country, helping us to understand day to day development helping us to paricipate well  in turn getting benefitted in career and contributing to the nation.

English is gate way to knowledge.

In my view 1. Mother tongue 2. Hindi 3.English.

This is primarily why we succumb to the west! We have a very strong ethnic, cultural and spiritual value system. For reasons of globalisation, English is a must. Proficiency in English is essential for coming of age with the global culture, but the roots are getting obliterated because of ignorance of one's own language and therefore culture. I studied in a convent school, but my parents showed me my anchor and ensured that I pick up those language skills as well. Today, parents have no time. Therefore it's all the more necessary for the schools to emphasise on the Indian languages in the same stride.

Arun well said, there are chances of hearing 'what is mother tongue' from our coming generation. Even the present generation are unable to read and write their mother tongue. Learning english is not bad but you need to know your mother tongue as well. Japan which is a well developed country does not prefer any other language other than their own mother tongue. So we should also realize its importance and act accordingly.

Why an either or questions? One should be given an opportunity to learn both English  and Mother tongue, but subjects like Maths, Science, Social should be taught in English, because our complete education system and curriculam is based on the western education system. In my view one should be given opportunity to select one or two (extra) subjects apart from the Regular studies (Maths/Science/Social/Sanskrit/Regional Language), such as Ancient Scriptures, Religious studies, Classical Dances, Traditional Farming, Country Music as compulsory subjects.

Its not necessary, once you grow based on your environment it automatically will learn the other languages. But mother is forget once he never get a chance to talk. In home the parents should talk in mother tongue only, then only we will respect and follow our tradition. Its nothing wrong to avoid english in home. "home is home' not the work place

Mother tongue tells about ones culture & one should know his/her culture first and along with it he should know other languages like 'english'. Students will learn faster if they are not forced to learn. When they'll feel its important to learn other languages for the livelihood or earning as in case of ENGLISH , they will learn for the purpose.

There are some topic for debates that I would prefer to not indulge in since I am not Indian and would look at certain issues from a different perspective. I would not  comment on whether Indians be taught English over mother tongue. However as Sarika rightly pointed out, English is an international language spoken and understood throughout the world and it will be good if the Indians can comprehend this language in addition to their mother tongue.

Even though Mr. Abraham has stated that English is the most uncouth language with no basic written rules, it is with great amusement I wish to say that English is my main language. I am from an English speaking country. As a matter of fact Guyana is the only English speaking country in South America. I do know some Spanish and French and very little Hindi. English has taken me a very far way in life. The only time I regretted I did not learn enough Hindi was when I was in India since I had to interact with some Indians who seem not to know any English at all.

Whatever comes out of this debate will be interesting. However, the bottom line is the government will decide on the appropriate languages to be taught in schools.

If you consider learning english over the mother tongue, then you will also consider using english as the primary language of the mother country... If you cannot understand each other in your mother tongue, what use is a second language. This will only cause confusion.

I dislike the fact that have to speak in some language just because english isn't understood, but I would not go around expecting them to learn english while they barely grasp the abilities of the mother tongue.

In the netherlands, the quality speaking and writing dutch has declined a lot since teaching this has become a lower priority over other subjects. In elementary school, children are taught basic english whereas when they leave highschool, they can barely tell you the outcome of 1+1.

Besides this, why english? Chinese (Mandarin) is the most spoken language and Spanish is a good third.

I think  one should learn your native tongue first, then add English as a secondary, as the US does with Spanish. I feel you should speak the language, what ever it is, of your country you reside in, but that's just my two cents.
