India has banned Fashion TV for nine days after finding a program it aired offended good taste and decency by showing women partially nude. As we all know, India is deeply conservative about sexual content in television and film. Until recently, even kissing was unacceptable.

ftv.jpg FTV image by knotstevs

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry statement said FTV channel would go off the air later Thursday until March 21. The statement cited an unnamed FTV program aired in September that showed women with nude upper bodies. India banned the same channel in 2007 for 60 days over programs such as ``Midnight Hot,'' showing scantily clad models.

So users, what do you think? Should FTV be banned permanently for Indian audiences?

FTV, AXN are the chanels for Adult entertainment. We are the worst prudes ever. The same ministers and bureaucrats who ban FTV might see worse material on the internet uncensored!! The "nude" shows are shown at midnight when children sleep. Then whats wrong with the programmes? Also, If it shows everything less, for how many days it will be banned? What will govt do about Internet? In the same way GoI should also ban Sun TV group for showing obscene video involving Nithyananda. They have done so much damage to Tamil culture without caring that many family members including children and elders watched the same helplessly. All people are aware, what to see and what not to see on tv. all type of categories of viewers are present in society.

Not only for Indian audiences I think it should be banned through-out the world. this chnnel is only promoting pornography on the name of business. This channel only shows the naked women on the name of showing clothes by different designers. I think those designers should first learn to design clothes from their nearest boutiques. They should know how should they show a woman in front of camera? They should learn to respect women and not treat them as a commodity.

One of my friend from K visited India few days back............he told me that he came to India only to see its culture/diversity............but he was sad to see that lots of things are going changed. I don't know who all see or what will be impact of F in mass public but it hamprs culture of India for which it is well known and it should not. So avoiding  such things like banning of F tv  will be a better option.

Yes, the FTV shall be banned completely from India. Indian culture is not to show nude or partial nude women.

Yes, I agree with Kavitha. These shows should be banned. This not the matter of "People know what to see and what not to see." There are some activities people do even after knowing the effects. So some rules should be imposed.

Moreover how can some be so sure that children sleeps at midnight.

This is a very good step taken by the government. These kind of shows and channels should permanently be banned. These should destroy our culture and inject bad thoughts in the minds of Indians and especially small children.

Its funny to ask to the ban FTv. A porn star received a red carpet welcome for the "Big Boss' show. The programs of this kind have to be banned not the television channels. There are "n" number of porn sites available on internet and we do receive mails from different service providers offering the nude pics. Better to take action on such messages and porn sites. However, we cant go on imposing bans on channels of this kind, considering the views of those who love them. It is we have to have the self-control.

Adopting the technology which is for good, but the cultural values of India is outstanding never loose it. The internet is great media input, but at the same time, it is affecting our culture due to vulgar websites. Certain websites should be blocked are coded, so the children won't watch it. Even when it comes to television same thing is happening. if it is coded  and passward is given ,it will help at large to save our cultural values without hurting other vision or thinking.

Are these the only channels? What about various porn sites in internet, blue books, etc., which are freely available? Better to have self-control and keep a close eye on your children rather than asking for banning these. How many can we ban?

Dear All, Let viewers decide what there eyeballs want to view and dream.Freedom and liberty is there for all, if something is against moral values or it is spoiling social fabric, it should be banned at the earliest. However, as far as FTV and AXN are concerned, lets not censor them. As a matured parents and big brother and sis lets keep watch on our minor dear and near ones. Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder. I favor watching adult, blue movies once we are above 18 years of age. Why? Because, its not bitter truth, its sweet truth that post marriage we indulge in sexual activities, which is one of the integral parts of nuptial life. And blue movies depicts how to enjoy sexual life. Some even enters sexual life before their marriage. Its their life, who are we too teach them what is unethical and what is ethical. These so called moral watch dogs should censor crime, corruption, rape, discrimination, terrorism as these also impact many of us.....lets not indulge in hue and cry over FTV and AXN...

To all those who say FTV is against Indian culture , I would like to ask , which aspects of Indian culture should be bring back which we have already moved away from ? the caste system , sati , child marriage ,...

When we have done away with so many negative aspects of ancient culture , there is no reason we cannot live with FTV , especially when all it shows is the nude female body.

From ages back , the nude female body has been an inspiration for artists , who have used real nudes as models.

It is only the mind of the beholder which can change such a normal thing into something dirty or indecent.

There is so much more indecency and vulgarity which is readily available , that banning FTV is more for the Taliban , not modern India.

No, I don't think that there is any proper reason for same.. If some channels are for adults then why media is responsible to show it? Every one is not bound to play the same channel.. One side we are discussing about the sex education in our school on other hand we are just opposite to our arguments. It(TV) is same like an internet connection on computer as every thing is available for all. It means you will support to ban all internet sites related to adults after sometime..... Why not we discuss all the topic with everyone or if not,,,, then why we create a lot of issues related to same.......

This discussion does not make sense to me.

What is the difference between this and the Taliban behavior. They are also behaving like that to protect their culture right?

Indian public is proving its double standard very fast. In last few surveys it was seen that adult sites are more and more visited by the Indians.People talking about the ban on FTV are the silent lovers of nude sites. If you want to see the FTV its ok otherwise its not coming automatically in front of you. So better before asking the ban on channels you ban a double standard man in you. That will be an automatic ban on the things which you don't want to see or like.

Dear Kiran I do not understand why we all want to ban things

Just like Muslim clergies keeping issuing fatwa left right and centre as per their whism and fancy , we also want lot of things banned

If you ban what will be the outcome, you can see that on internet, if you ban on internet you cannot ban pornography

What is to be acheived by this banning , drop in rape and crime against women , there are other ways to achive this not banning the shows

All cable show adult movies post 11 pm and they do so only with the blessing of the local politician, so who is going to ban and will it work

Thanks for the referral Kiran,

What I really would like to know is what are the criteria’s/ laws to ban a particular channel or any program shown on it?

The censor board has fixed some rules and they make their judgment according to, but who is checking what those rules are, and have we as a nation grown up to take up and absorb cultures from other countries?

In one statement we say that we are one of the leading nations of the world and then we go around and ban a channel just because some things are shown on it which some of us did not like. What has this done? Some of the people who did not see that particular show, or who were not even aware that such a show did exist will now try to look for other ways to get to it, I think that its popularity will grow even more.

I think that banning a channel is a weak example.

Yes .... such a series of shows should be banned to be aired, for a time being, in India. But "permanent bann" may not be possible without growing a serious openion against.

The root-cause is "consumerism". Growing consumerism is becoming a great threat for a country like India. Most of the ideas to augment consumerism comes from abroad, never mind : they are rich nations with handful of population.

India, still now, has a population of 'not so rich' people where poverty has not been completely wiped out. People are friendly, tollerent, easy going, a bit God-fearing, respect-ful for parents and elders, savings motivated etc (unlike prevalent in the West). Consumerism goes well with ads of fashion, cosmetics etc. etc. all forming a nexus.

Such a nice society, a civilisation of 5,000 more years should not let to be destroyed by 'signals coming from abroad'.

We may, however, watch cautiously the following also :-

---   Some performances of Indian cinemas specially that of Bollywood ( others like Kollywood and Tollywood etc are just copying them for survival)

---    Lots of news channel, men and women, moving with cameras on shoulders. Some are airing Life-style versions, some 'reality shows". Some of them are airing almost obscenes - for increasing T.R.Ps.

---   Local cable operators are airing negative cinemas at mid-night ( law does not permit )

---   Lattest : I.P.L - a hi-breed Cricket-cinema-fashion-Media nexus, consumerism again

Agree to Kiran's views in toto. On taking a close look, we shall find equally, if not more, objectionable scenes in some of our films and magazines.

As one grows, one should learn how people in other parts of the world live, eat and dress.  Vulgarity is not in what one wears vulgarity is a thought.  According to me thinking makes difference.  However, on such platforms, the ideas change shores.  What you are banning may be followed in your home and your tradition may be followed elsewhere.  It is natural phonomina (excuse spelling).  Let us learn tolerance and advocate what our generations have found it right to the ones who does not know it.  Banning will close this opportunity permenantly.

Fashion TV is for showing Fashion worldwide so banning this is not a good thing. I agree some times it cross its limit but this is not a childrens channel it is viewed by adults and they exactly know what to see and what not then why this bann

No, it shouldn't be banned. There is more things to learn than to abuse it. Even though you ban it, it will change nothing. If people want to see something change happening then they have to change the way they look at things & the way they think.

So, I don't think we should ban F TV....

HI, well no doubt that explicit content and nudity is also responsible for adulteration in our culture, but only FTV or other channels like that are not the only reasons for it and not all programs on the channel are like that.. well by banning this channel we are putting hurdles in the steps of those people who wants to make their career in fashion technology and designing. The learning process for these people will become slow.

And speaking about culture - Spoiling culture can not be stopped by banning this channel, because  those people who wants to see nudity and contents like that will go on doing that by surfing the porn sites and watching other B grade movies. So there is no effect of  closing this channel but yes the upcoming career opportunities will definitely hamper.

Would agree with you, Mr Reddy. We are OK with all trash being shown on TV soaps otherwise, which show a vengeful attitude, one-upmanship, supernatural stories and also with the news channels showing sleaze and blood and gore.

We are prudes, no doubt about that!!
