Should Government awards like Padmashree & Bharat ratna be scrapped?

As there is a huge furore over the nomination of US based Sant singh chatwal for the Padma award from the Indian government, and now the congress is distancing itself from the controversial US hotelier who was in a fraud case of 9 Million dollars from SBI.

And also there is the unseemly political wrangling going on like who should get the Bharat Ratna. L K Advani was the first in the fray by throwing Atal Bihari Vajpayee's name into the ring. To show that even death is no disqualification for the Ratna-race, Mayawati chucked in the candidature of her late mentor, Kanshi Ram. Since then, several other nominees for the posthumous award have been put up, including Charan Singh, Jagjivan Ram, Biju Patnaik and Karpoori Thakur.  And there are many occasions that we have seen a person who is not at all qualified for the award getting awards which irks most of the country men and in even many state awards are given like these. With so much happening, don't you think we should scrap the Padma & Bharat ratna awards?

I think its a really serious issue!!

And if our government who took objections for MSDhoni not reaching for his Padma is awarding a fraudster in the same breath, I think the whole process is definitely questionable! Whether it should be stopped would be a rather harsh step but I think there should be auditors whoa would validate the reasons for the recepient to receive such a coveted award.

I am really proud that India has these awards instilled in the system but they should be given to the rightful and deserving candidates and not by random selection!! Thanks for the referral Himanshu :)

I think the whole awards agenda itself should be scraped from the Indian government itinery and people are buying these awards, and even if genuine people are getting these awards but the whole award will loose its sheen we will be disrespecting the genuine deserving people with other non deserving people, so when such debacles are happening in Government awards then just think about the state awards which will be given out, people will not even be knowing the names of those who will be getting these awards, so no point in giving out a award which is being sold just because they are connected with some or the other babu in politics, you never know people like Lalu yadav & Madhu koda also getting these awards in future. So, it would be better if Government scraps these awards than disgracing these awards.

instead of scrapping such honor we should develop such a system that involves reviews /voting rights from general public or it should be totally based on merits that can be quantified .its unfortunate that influtential people have used it in their or their near and dear ones.

Yes, it's facing credibility crisis.. but lets not scrap it. We shud hv a independent body devoid of any influence and bias to decide these awards.  Somewhat like a constitutional body. there r many awards,one feels grat at get them, but to be recognised by one'own country - the feeling is altogether different...

Its the people and state giving the award not any political party but sadly, that is the way it looks,now
