In a recent news it has come to light that the Intelligence Bureau has asked the communication ministry to block all internet telephony (VoIP) services to and from the country until the Department of Telecom (DoT) puts in place a mechanism to track such calls.

The IB is of the view that currently, India does not have the technology to track internet telephony calls of both domestic & international  and has asked the DoT find solution to this issue in the interest of national security. So what do you think guys should Government block all net telephony services? share your views on this.

Though banning is not the recommended solution, but tiil the time DoT/Ministry/IB come up with some tracking solution, general/wide use of it must be stopped.  How can governemtn permit to use a loose ended technologies, without proper control, and which may be used for anti-national activities?  There could be other ways to control the usage/net-calls.  Setup STD booth like centres/cafes and ban individuals to operate for voice calls over net.  These booths/cafe's can note there customers details like cyber-cafe's do. This will help to stop the misuse up to certain extent and same time permit the people to use cheap voice calls over net.

Importantly, govt should appoint a professional's/expert's commitee with agressive time-lines to implement the security & tracking mechanism.

Else, who cares, sab chalta hai...!

I don't think that they should be banning the VOIP or the net telephony, i guess the major problem here is the absence of caller line identification  the CLI, and even in the 26/11 attacks terrorists used this net telephony services and they knew that India was not technoloically equipped to track these calls, if DoT were to implement the IB directive, it will impact hundreds of thousands of consumers who use the internet to make extremely low cost calls to phones and free calls to computers across the globe.

Than banning they should come up with some technology which can track these calls like, in the US and Europe, all players who offer VoIP services have provisions that allow governments to track these calls. Many of them have also installed equipment at their premises to monitor VoIP calls upon orders from governments. There should be something similar on these lines. what do you say guys.

I agree with Nilesh. Every service that is offered has to have a jurisdiction. This is in fact in the interest of the people getting connected! Most would talk to their relations, but some would talk to business colleagues and business partners also. So when it comes to consucting business, this is the jurisdiction that helps in safe guarding people and establishes parameters for working.

Very well argued Nilesh!! Thanks for the referral Sonal! :))

I agree to all the members supporting " against banning" this service...

instead a tracking system will be the best option...

bcoz the main motive of any technology should be to improve n reduce the cost of the respective services or business...

n when it is benefiting people like us n everyone, it should be well motivated ... ofcourse keeping security on top priority.....

Government shouldn't block the net telephony services just in the interest of national security. Are they sure that this will 100% help in ensuring security? There are many other ways as the technology is growing day to day. So,first of all govt. should understand the problems involved before taking such steps. Many small scale companies do their business calls over net telephony to save the costs.Government should find the fraud tracking tools instead of blocking these calls. There are already few players existing in the market to track the calls made by SIM box.Why don't we put efforts on such tools?

This is not an intelligent idea! Though the net-phony users will not like it, the telecom service providers will welcome the move for an obvious revenue increase.  Deploying a tracking tech would be the best move, but blocking those services until then is ridiculous and cannot greatly stop any anti-social activity. Perhaps, it can only be an intelligent idea for a new tech invention!

Net telephony is all about communication offered on a new platform.Sooner or later all telephonic communication will be seamless globally offered at negligible cost and VAS will be the revenue earner

No,not at all...majority of internet users use internet as a telephonic medium because it costs them less. Our Internet industry will lose lot of users if these services are gone will will be a great loss for them.

Whoever has sought the banning of VoIP has failed to understand that the ratio of legitimate usage vs. usage for unlawful purposes is not comparable for such a decision.  If US or other nations are managing to monitor such calls, why cant we take a few ideas from there?

What if such people use radio or morse-code?  :-) Will such services be banned too?

What about the usage of cellphones for illegal activities?  Though there is the capability to monitor cellphone calls, has this actually stopped criminals or other such parties from using this facility?
