From the topic I come to understand that the question is "Whether IIM grads should be encouraged to join IAS?" If that is the meaning the topic is conveying then the answer is yes, since these grads are being trained to work vigorously. Of what I have come to know they are asked to complete tedious, lengthy work assignments on a short notice. With this kind of work habit they are more well groomed to handle the "sometimes" volatile situations in "some" parts of the country. And anyways they won't be able to get into the IAS unless they have true partiotic values in them. That is ensured to a great extent by the UPSC.

Civil Service is more of a service than a career,it should be pursued by people who have real commitment for it and who really wish to get in service and not by a bunch of professionals with very high analytical skills.

Pradeep, if you say IIM & IIT grads are highly skilled professionals then I guess you are not following news, reviews, analysis & survey done by some govt agencies & in-dependent bodies in past 4-5yrs they all of said people from IIM & IIT are still not up to the mark.

No! They are two different fields. One is politics and Administration, and the other is Management and Profits. They are two different mindsets and require different profiles of thought , ambition, and dedication.

Agree completely there - I think the requirements for IAS officers are quite substantially different and their KRAs and KPIs do not match those that MBAs are trained for. So why waste talent and expertise, get less than satisfactory results and frustrate invidual officers?

Thank for the referral Ms Revali IIM graduates are better off looking after the business sector. IAS is a complex process, let there be people who have put in time and effort totally into this. As it is if IIM’s and MBA’s come in all field where will be scope for non IIM’s and Non-MBA’s.

IIM's are manufacturing commercial/industrial managers, where as IAS manufactures managers to the nation of which, commerce and industry is only a small but very important segment. IIM graduates if come thru the process of IAS, they may prove better managers. But IAS is essential.

People with Management degree from reputed institutions could apply for IAS. The IAS stream is meant for people with different backgrounds so that they bring a diversified perspective to the policy making processes. When a person has spent sufficient time doing a management degree from a reputed institution, a lot of effort would have been spent in that direction and the intent is to excel in the business domain. This domain is different from the IAS domain that is focused on public policy, government and related areas. However, if a person is really interested in doing IAS rather than focusing in any other area, then any background should be acceptable. Otherwise, it is better to focus in a specific domain in which a person has already specialized earlier.....
