India's security establishment has taken a hard-line view on Research In Motion's (RIM.TO) stance that it does not possess a "master key" to intercept data traffic on BlackBerry and has warned services that cannot be monitored will be shut down.

The Indian government is very clear that any BlackBerry service that cannot be fully intercepted by the agencies must be discontinued. Offering access to data is part of the telecom licensing guidelines and has to be adhered to.  RIM has said BlackBerry security is based on a system where the customers create their own key and the company neither has a master key nor any "back door" to allow RIM or any third party to gain access to crucial corporate data. which cannot be intercepted by the Governement agencies.  If you remember when Mumbai 26/11 incidents happened the Terrorists were using blackberry services of which the Government were unable to track...

So, Should India discontinue Blackberry services citing security concerns??

Yes, Blackberry's service should discontinue.

No compromise over security issue of India. This is good opportunity to teach lesson to these types of Hippocrates.

no india should not discontinue the servies. what we should do is to make the RIM to keep a server in India and make all communication transparent for our security personels. encrypted mesages having a server in canada will harm us. china does have a server. why don't India which has a million user. for making the RIM know about the situation India should give a deadline and should take the issue to them and its urgency. if still they are not helping us then we could do what UAE has done last week....

Sonalji,I think we should not decide, opine emotionally. As we all know it has security threats and i have seen that BB handsets have different power-control thresholds also which makes it more prone to call drops. It can enjoy its Business when there will be no security threats and other drawbacks. There are lots of smart phones available in market which dont have any such issues then why should a subscriber go for a insecure brand..???

Though I use BB but I am not so selfish that I will support BB.

India has real terror threats and Blackberry can easily be used to keep things under cover.

I will support anyone ban BB service if BB doesn't understand Indian security concerns.

Ultimately Security can not be compromised at any cost irrespective of any govt's competency to track terror. We do not want to see poor people getting killed while we debate.

Thanks friends for participating but this can be fixed. BB as a device is better than other devices. Banning is not acceptable....

I don't think they should ban Blackberry services it would not be the right thing, Just because India doesn't have a security establishment which is incompetent with software security can't go on saying that they will ban the blackberry services. Either they should join with RIM in making sure that he Indian government to help them track emails, without sharing encryption details..I think that will solve the problems, or more dialogue is needed between the government and RIM to solve the issue than banning the Mobile services altogether...
