Its not the matter of building infrastructure before or putting in some inputs for that matters but small cars shall not be promoted at all instead better and efficient public transport system shall be made available which seems to be more effective, environmentally favourable as well as decongeting the roads which have already been plundered.

YES - would be the word, given the current economic trends. SME concepts are the biggest source of revenue generation - but this also should be taken up with technology innovations. More of "Green Concept" should be adopted like battery operated cars [Reva, Indica EV, Spark Electric] or Hybrid technology which is at a very nascent stage in india. The government should lend its support in terms of giving tax discounts to promote a greener environment other wise it is not a sustainable business concept.

firstly the increase in number of cars/motor bikes has occured because of the easily available finance from banks and not for any other reason. Secondly no one should have the right to deprive the middle/lower middle class from the comforts of there own car/motorbike. Along with the government should improve upon the public transport as if a good option were available most common public would prefer there routine commutes via public transport only and use the private car for family outings etc which happen on weekends and/or non peak traffic hours and so do not neccesssarily become a burden on the infrastructure. Of course keeping the fuel availabilitty and pollution in mind, the car companies should innovate more and come up with environment friendly and more fuel efficient models and also explore more vehementally alternate fuels and hybrids.

May see things a shade differently on this particular issue dear. Lets welcome the advent of low cost small cars and especially our very own TATA's taking the initiative to begin with; technology/cost factors, cutting down certain elements of traffic and of course targetting a certain fragment of society. Its no secret that the infrastructure in this country is worth harping about, however lets give the Government some time to work on their proposed/planned infrastructure plans for the moment.

I would like to say yes because in India if it happens then these cars can replace the motor bikes. Also if you want any work to be completed like roads infrastructure then this might be the best idea.Because if we wait for roads to improve then not only us but also the next two generation would not be able to see the Small low cost cars.So this can be good idea if we want to improve our roads first implement this idea.If we need anything then only we do something.

I agree with people who answer yes here. Forgot about good roads and space till you actually have people with cars. Even otherwise, cars were invented much before we got to see roads for them. Small low cost cars like Nano itself will address such issues if they have to to remain in market. What it means otherwise is that only rich can have cars till we have roads and fuel quality. People/Companies have to do it themselves when Govt. fails to look into the matter.

All these days in our country, unlike the other countries like UK,Japan,USA where all the infrastrutures will be planned according to the increasing market needs. Infrastures have been developed only when there was a deadly need of improvement or only when there was no other option but to improve..... So as far i see,its better to introduce the things into the market and force the people incharge to deal with the improvement activities.

ITs difficult to take side as both things are equally important .We do need small cars like nano and at the same time de-congestion on roads needs to happen .Better roads , flyovers , infrastructure etc... also needs to improve .Now th ebig question is will it be ofr the better to pressurize govts for infrastructure ,presurize smart traffic signaling mechanisms etc... by flooding our roads with small cars , or is it that we need to clean up the mess first , keep the infrastructure in place and then go for such cars ?? a very interesting debate :) personally , i would like to go with the first option,

Small cars like Tata Nano are quite capable to compete with other cars in the Indian market.Nano is specially built to run on Indian roads and mileage is pretty good as well ( more than 20kmpl ). It's a good initiative to launch this kind of cars in India as other foriegn companies are experimenting day by day to launch more small and low cost cars. Although the road qualities and better mileage are of prime concern.

Off course it works even what ever may be the fuel cost because small cars like Nano and others have showing the mileage more then the other cars. So india will encourage it. Thanks

No, In India low cost small cars shall not be encouraged abecause the automobile scenario is gradually moving ahead from introduction to medieval times due to rising incomes, status values, bigger needs and more comfort features. My argument against the promotion is supported by the fact that Segment B has become benchmark for first time buyers and more of B+ & C segment cars are visible on the roads.

Dear friends, While innovation is needed and Tatas are to be congratulated for their precious efforts it is wrong to a ssume that infrastructure will be automatically in place. Under the present setup our politicians are least bothered about infrastructure unless it suits their plans of illegal earnings. I would rather request socially conscious Tatas and Infosys promoters to take the Lead in that area also which is definitely within their reach. If somebody opposes he should be kept in his place by thorough public exposure. This is the only way of catching up on improving infrastructure. K.Venkateswarlu

No, the govt. should not encourage manufacturing of small cars. Small cars will definitely target the mass, now imagine every two-wheeler is replaced by a four wheeler; what the condition would be?????? more pollution, heavy traffic, more greenhouse gases, rise in oil prices...........etc. If the mass wants to enjoy a small car ask the mass to control population. Just imagine.....now u would be taking some 30 mins. to reach your office or school...if everybody travels by car u will take some 1 hr or 1hr 30 mins.....

India should not encourage small low cost cars like Nano before proper infrastructure development, as it may worsen the situation of traffic in cities like Pune, Hyderabad.People should learn safe driving habits before driving such small cars.We should be provided by effective public transport system like monorails, trams to avoid traffic jams . Also it creats less pollution. If Govt. provides the effective & economical public transport system in 2 tyre cities then it may see a fall in demand for small cars.

proper utilization of resources is what really matter in our life.the efforts of ratan tata is undoubtedly remarkable but again i think we need to ponder that the type of roads which we have in india, increasing number of road accidents, and more importantly the uncomfortableness of customers.not only this with carbon footprint at its height dut to human actions and industries i think we don't really need another participant in this profile.

Debashis you are correct India will encourage low cost and fuel efficient cars but for driving it we need good infrastructures. The roads is India should be first looked upon and then the increasing fuel prices. What is the use of launching many cars without fuel. So we should do something to sustain the fuel and develop the road condition before launching small cars. Thanks.

It doesn't make economic sense "scaling down" markets. In TATA's case they are in a wide spectra of the markets. So they can ride out the downturn using this need. It is advisable to upscale markets rather not donwards so that economy can grow. This can have reprucsions in the long run, where stagnation can suddenly occur due to too much scaling down. Then India is not one homogeneous market. We have markets for every cluster and if these clusters don't move up scale then these industries never get upgraded. Segregation of markets is sure cause for market failure. Stagnation can cause economic failure.

Evenif roads and fuel quality are improved, we should not encourage manufactring of any car unless they are very environmental friendly. We should encourage research & manufacturing of vehicles running on solar energy etc. only. Also we should encourage to improve efficiency of our public transport system.

India requires public transportation systems as like Japan. We should majorly depend on public transportation system instead of individual transport. If Nano like cars are used in India, the next generation will have to face the serious health problems. Keeping this point, I suggest to ban Nano car production for India.

Upgradation of infrastructure and Traffic License regulation is utmost essential before launch of such cars.
We have to learn civic driving habits first then encourage such products.
