India's acquisition of 126 new medium multi-role combat aircraft will play an essential role in India's transformation from a regional power to a global giant , according to a South Asia expert.

Eight countries and six companies eagerly await the Indian Air Force's selection of a new medium multi-role combat aircraft.

The winner of the competition for the $10 billion deal will also gain a toehold in a lucrative market, writes Ashley J. Tellis, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington think tank, in a paper. So, what do you think people should India invest more in Defence  or  invest more into education and socio-economic programmes? Share your views on this please...

I some how believe this is another BIG SCAM in the making. Why don't we spend this money in education, socio-economic developmental activities??Only when we attain self sufficiency, we can say that we are Super Power and not just having those fighters. We have to learn a lot from third world countries.  If it was that easy, many countries could buy 126 fighters for US$ 11 Billion and become superpowers.

The current investment into defence is ok as we need to urgently replace our ageing fleet of mig aircrafts and given the current threat perception, it is inevitable but to spend on defence though an equal spending on education and socio-economic programmes is also the need of the hour. Tell you what, if we are able to recover the assets of our politicians stashed away in swiss banks, that would be more than enough to cover the latter.

With the developments in our neighbours' defence weapons and strategies, India's Defence without a doubt needs to keep up with it. Education and socio- economic programmes today are being invested upon too. Its just that we need to work on clearing off corruption here to get the real outcome of the investment. So my vote goes for Defence!

Yes. Not only to these sectors. There is yet another most important sector, namely Agriculture. Where neighbouring countries who are inimically disposed towards India, Of course cunningly not expressing it, then it becomes more and more necessary for us to invest more on defense sector. India need not care or bother about internal enemy-agents who have control over certain section of media, who always criticize India's progressive steps, in projecting as if it is going to be bad. India shall not give any reaction or consideration for such criticism. Go ahead whatever any body say in this regard. Make India strong always in all respect.

India needs to be strong to protect from external aggression which calls for its forces to be well equipped with modern weapons. Today, Indian forces are not as well equipped as its neighbours, and every year we hear defence chiefs telling the government for modernisation of the equipment. Expenditure on education and socio-economic programmes is always required, but equally important is to protect from the external aggression. We hear day in and day out on border incursions on borders with both neighbouring countries.

We have built our defence capabilities. Along with that we should not neglect our agrarian population. Simultaneously, we should develop education, health and safety of every citizen!

Yash I will agree only partially with you. If you see the recent postures by china I think India is on the right direction.

Yes education is also important and today it has become the birth right of every Indian to get access to education

Call of the day is defense! But, if I may elaborate, first things first- empowering a nation from within is possible only if the general masses are educated at large! Today or tomorrow this is going to be the only solution! Strengthening a country from within and then thinking about its external defenses sounds wise but idealistic at the same time! Though we cannot be Costa Rica, education is the priority, according to me! Thanks for inviting @Yash.
