Iran Pakisthan India natural gas pipeline route

From the recent news, there was  a statement from Iran..

Iran today said it could not wait ''indefinitely'' for India to decide on the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project while negotiations with Pakistan had gone ahead to the ''stages of implementation.''

''Our negotiations with Pakistan have gone ahead to the stages of implementation...We have kept our doors open for India to join the project. It (Iran) will not wait indefinitely.

There must be a time limit,'' Iranian Ambassador to India Seyed Mehdi Nabizadeh said here

So do u think India should go ahead with joining the gas pipe line project keeping in future energy requirements from india.

India produces 90 million standard cubic meters per day (mcmd), his demand is 150 mcmd, and after the installation of the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, India would get further 60mcmd through it. Natural gas use in India was nearly 25 billion cubic meters in 2002 and is to reach 34 billion cubic meters in 2010. So, this pipeline will definitely solve the energy security problem in India.

Shikha thanks for your statistics....appreciated

I am in favour of NO...it is required may be now a days....but better to have our own resources...I am pointing out the Ambani brothers confrontation....

We can not take risk by involving Pakistan in between....unless Pakistan will have stable government, terror free zone, and friendly relation with us....

Yes I think India should ink the deal here with energy security seriously falling short for India at the moment, where India depends nearly 80% for fuel from other countries, and if this pipeline is there, then it will do real good for India interms of fuel capacity and also it will bring down the fuel price  which is increasing at the moment, I think the delay here is mainly due to India and US ties where US is against Iran due to its funding to terrorist organizations, and supply of military equipments to these organizations, if the deal happens it will boost the revenue of Iran which it will use in these activities, hence the deal is not happening.

Yes, India should go ahead with the project. Since there is no sufficient natural gas reserves in india, when the gas is being imported through the pipeline project, it can be certainly used for generating energy, power for meeting the energy requirements. According to a report Pakisthan is planning to generate 4600 Megawatts from Iranian gas. Hence India can to join the negotiation for this project so that it can use the gas for power generation overcoming the difficult situations with pakisthan.

Iran minister has given statement from their perspective. Before, deciding on the issue, one need to be sure that it does not become a headache for India because of Pakistan being on pipeline route. Further, as stateted, in case the pipeline is installed up to Pakistan, India shall have the option of extending the pipeline up to its territory. Generally any operator of a pipeline shall keep such an option open from comercial point of view. I think our diplomcy on the issue should be such that India retains the option of joining/extending in the project a later date.

Also, given the facts of finds of hydrocarbon gas in eastcoast of Indian offshore by Reliance, ONGC, GSPC, I feel that India has the potential of becoming self sufficient in Gas in next ten years ( My personal opinion).

All these facts needs to deliberated before hand. Therefore, considering the present political scenerio in Pakistan and India, it may not be advisable to go head with the pipeline at present.

Points of concern

1. how to agree with pakistan for joint pipeline

2. who will assure the secuirty of this pipeline

3. the cost of this project will shoot up by the time it finish

4. the realiabity on gas will be shifted to nuclear by the time this project completes

As Mr.Prakash told It'll become a headache for India to move on with the Gas-pipeline project in terms of Security . . . Day-by-day terrorism, hence the violence & hatred in pakistan is only growing not reducing. Whatever the security the Governments going to give for the project all the days won't be the same. Its Better not to take risks . . !

Also we are proposing to invest on the fossil fuels that is going to die-out in 35-40 years. So planning for a temporary solution to the energy needs of the country will cripple our future as a whole. There will be generations start to blame us.

Instead with such big budget, India can invest it well for innovative and economical development of Alternative/Clean/Green Energies. It'll satisfy all in terms of constant supply, economy and zero environmental impacts for our whole future.

So considering Security in terms of Energy, External threats and Environment its better to switch off the proposal/idea and try to make some fruitful ideas for a better living.

FIRST THING I NOTE IS THAT, A WRONG MAP IS USED HERE. A MAP SHOWING POK AS A PART OF PAK AND AKSAI CHIN AS A PART OF CHINA. FROM INDIA'S VIEW POINT, THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE MAP.

The proposed pipe line may become pemanent headache for India.

- This pipe line will become favorite target of all terrorist groups. (as such, Pak has no control over these groups). It will be highly prone to sabotages. After every attack on pipeline, Pakistan will reiterate that, such attacks can not be stopped till Kashmir problem is solved.

-Pakistan will use this pipe line to arm twist India economically as well as for political reasons.

-In view of uncertainities in supply as well as potential problems, no industry will plan projects based on this source of supply.

IN NUTSHELL, THIS IS NOT A FEASIBLE PROJECT.
