With more and more honour killing cases coming to the surface, one can only gauge the enormity of the problem of deep rooted belief and practices particularly in rural India.

Most of these judgements, social dictums are incongrouous to modern society as they are delivered and implemented based on prejudices of uncultured minds.

It is high time India take decisive steps towards social reform to ban such systems

Yes the government should take necessary action against these Khap panchayet. They should be completely banned. Recent days we are seeing more and more honour killings especially in India. I don't think this problem is there in any country.

So people involved in this should punished severely......

Yes, if they continuing with the same procedure and way their will be a threat to Indian Law and Justice. Sometimes its not easy to ban the Khap Panchayats but an initiative can be take to get them updated and to change them as per the time. At all if they are not agree with, they should be banned. A timely and strong step is to be taken against them to avoid a chaos in future.

Marriages within the gotra ("swagotra" marriages) are banned under the rule of exogamy in the traditional matrimonial system. People within the gotra are regarded as kin and marrying such a person would be thought of as incest. In some communities, where gotra membership passed from father to children, marriages were allowed between maternal uncle and niece, while such marriages were forbidden in matrilineal communities, like Malayalis and Tuluvas, where gotra membership was passed down from the mother.

More over gotra system is to avoid marrying in the same clan. This leads to blood related problems and reduces the body resistance leading to health problem.

In the world there were two types of chitas left in wild. The African and Asian. The Asian Chita is now limited to Iran and are near extinction and African, though are more in number are found to be of same lineage. Now the scientist fear that one day any disease may put all the animals into danger.

Yes of course the honor killing is not right and cannot be justified under any pretext.

Here on this posting, we rember men like : Raja RamMohon Roy, Vidyasagar, BankimChandra, SaratChChatterjee etc for their nobel works. Details elsewhere.

Yes, but who has that political will to take on the caste driven so-called, panchayats?

Have you noticed a single statement from the like of Rahul Gandhi, Arnun Jaitley, Sachin Pilot, Scindia Jr., et al, the young face of Indian politics?

Or for that matter, any statement against Khap-panchayats from Sonia Gandhi, Dr. Singh, the young BJP Chief, Karats, etc. the middle / old aged Political personalities of India!

Yes.

Any independent system of justice outside of the country's legal system , which has a death penalty , is shocking. It should be banned , and action should be taken against all those involved in such courts.

If at all a panchayat feels that an individual or a couple or a family has gone against the traditional mores , then the maximum penalty that can be imposed is to fine the guilty some amount in cash or kind. A death penalty in the form of honour killings is absolutely barbaric , and has no place in today's civilized society.

Mr. Amar's argument about abortion is unconnected. Even abortion is to be condemned if it is forced upon the pregnant mother. It is the mother alone who has the right to decide whether she should go in for an abortion or not.

i support Kavitha in her forward note. The Indian culture from time immomerial has supported anthropologocal values. The spirit behind these values was multilateral  expansion of society . The purpose has since been achieved. The "KHAP" panchayats should review their value system for the benifits of the societies at large.

mere banning is inadequate.

They must be tried swiftly as and when they happen and punished.
