The Maharashtra Karnataka boundary row suddenly came to the limelight following the central government's affidavit in the Supreme Court last week that the disputed areas could not be made part of Maharashtra merely because a majority of the population there speak Marathi.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan Wednesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and handed over a memorandum demanding that 865 Marathi speaking villages on the Karnataka Maharashtra border be granted union territory status till the Supreme Court verdict on the issue. He said in the memorandum that the Kannada language should not be imposed on the Marathi speaking people in Belgaum and the interests of the Marathis in the area should be protected. He had charged the Karnataka government with changing the names of the villages in the disputed areas and discriminating against the Marathi speaking people there.

So users, do you think language alone should determine a state's boundaries?

Dear Ms. Sarika, I don't want to take any of side but just want to add little information in your knowledge.

All of our states are formed on the basis of the language spoken in that particular area & the states are formed.

& particular about Belgaon, then you can personally visit the place & check the details, & find about people who lived there & more than 70% talked Marathi from last 40 to 50 years.

Karnataka Govt. is forcefully closed the marathi schools & started Kanada school. & everybody knows it very well.

Is this a democracy?

& why there is always separate law applied to Maharashtra's every issue?

So it's better for all of us to know the fact that these ......????? politicians purposely divided us in the very beginning while formation of states.

& it's of no use to fight on these sentimental & burning issue right now as there are several matters are pending in courts for last so many years & it's decision may separate a friend from friend & neighbor from neighbor.

Just forget everything & keep in mind that above all "We are Indian first & then.................??????? You better know!

Before making any decision on the issue of Belgaum, we need to know several things first:-

1) How has the district developed since it is part of K'taka?

2) Has anything been documented on what people really want at the grassroots?

3) Even if people want to join M'rashtra, what will that state do to the district?

4) What are the gains and losses to each state in the current situation and in the theoretical situation?

We are already so parochial and I am afraid someone may stand up one day to divide states based on caste! God forbid!

Our culture is purely co-existence with peace and support humanity.  Any agitation in India be it supported by anybody turning violent is not of Indians and who are indulging in such activities are not Indians. Fighting based on language or any other divisive things are equally bad.  Division does not yield progress.  One should not try to win/progress by changing side.  If anybody is worried about backwardness of Belagum, they should start thinking on that issue alone and re-organisation of states is over and there is no point in raking the issues for the sake issues in the name of backwardness.  By speaking Marathi / Kannada one cannot avoid backwardness.

DOES A CHIEF MINISTER OF NEIGHBOURING STATE HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE THE STATUS OF PEOPLE LIVING IN ANOTHER STATE?LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE WHERE THEY WANT TO LIVE.IF PEOPLE SPEAKING MARATHI ARE SO PARTICULAR THEY WILL NOT BE LIVING IN KARNATAKA.

LET THE C.M FOCUS HIS ATTENTION ON SOME THING MORE PRODUCTIVE AND BENEFICIAL FOR HIS STATE.

State boundaries should be only for economic & administrative convenience and the social fabric has got nothing to do with it. In fact, there are no natural boundaries, all of these are manmade

Thanks for the referral Ms Sarika

You have rightly pointed out by putting in different questioners. When ever a state is divided or formed it becomes an additional burden on the government, the law and order situation has to be seen, the growth of the region has to be seen, and so many other aspects are there. Language alone should not decide the fate of a state.

Language and relegion are the two culprits destroying this country. These two subjects are purely personal matters and should be kept out from Government and Judiciary. Let people learn as many languages as posible and need. If language determins the boundary then all metros should come under Union government.

The areas are divided into various states only for the administrative convenience and for the development of that area. Language is also the factor dividing the states. Now we are in the modern era and living in various states, so language cannot determine the state's boundaries.

If we start determining the boundaries of the state on the basis of languages then there will be no end to it. We are all the citizens of india and we have a constitutionalright to move around from one state to another freely. If we start indulging in these regionalistic jingoism the core value of india will be lost which is not in the interest of anybody. It will wreak havoc and disaster in the country.
