I see no harm, but, frankly I do not feel that an NRI will become a successful political leader at least for a few years more. Most of India's votes come from economically backward areas, because majority of the city population do not vote for some reason! This is the reason why most of India's mass leaders rise from smaller and backward areas, because they appeal to majority of the voters. An NRI leader will not appeal to Indian masses. An NRI leader will become a case just like Shashi Tharoor, who just did not fit in! Instead, NRI's will do much better in back office politics, like the secretariat - "The brains behind the politicians". Regards, Om Deshpande

NRI or Non Reliable Indian, this is a stamp given to NRI’s by Indians living in India. And as far as the current Indian politico environment is seen, being Non Reliable fulfils the category of getting a ticket to party candidature.

The plus for NRIs is that (a) they may (not definately) have seen and absorbed better systems for governance and administration, and their actual implementation and operations; and (b) they may not have a requirement for a career when they return, i.e. more time to indulge in service to the nation per se. This does not mean that just being a NRI makes a person fit to be a meaningful politician - far from it! The basic problem is that even in the unlikely event that an NRI can win a seat, just an individual or even a handful of such individuals cannot make any difference in the system. I think that to be able to contribute, they need to be a part of a political party - and there lies the catch. Political parties - at least mainstream parties have enough internal strife to distribute tickets amongst their members, and giving tickets to potentially good administrators is of no concern in theie electoral process! Getting the 'right' candidate - even if they are shady or downright criminals - is their key to seat strength and power. Who cares for good governance? So what can be done to better the exisiting state of affairs? I really don't know. Just being a resident or non-resident doesn't help...

mr. suresh asher, i do not agree with your statement ac the nri are no different from us as human being. like us, they are living their life in a different country, and enjoying the fruits. they are already having dual citizen ship. We and our country provides them each facility and preference, even more than local habitants.i think, thats enough, they are welcome, but let politics be with locals

Hi ... everybody. One Mr Sashi Tharoor, an NRI joined politics in India - India could not progress due to his joining. That does not mean all NRIs may not succeed and may not work for Indians who maily lives in villages, semi-urban places. Expected that s/he will feel the pulse of his countrymen, understand country's core culture and tradition, her wants and aspirations. Actually, a persons joins Politics when s/ he feels an urge to bring some betterment for the countrymen and s/ he brings in all resources, men and idea in this direction. If the above is possible for an NRI, s/ he may join politics of his/her own, unmindful what 'bloggers' on TooStep are suggecting. Thanks

In our country we need a quality leadership and i think we need to give advantage to people from our country because they know what is the condition of our country . We can't change system until we not entered into it .

NRIs may not have sufficient time to focus on political activities in India as they focus most of their time outside India. They can follow various activities in India and they can invest in India, but for political activities you need to invest your own time in your specific constituency to understand the issues prevalent among the population of the constituency. By being away from the main stage and controlling the constituency remotely, the outcomes will not be very satisfactory. However, they can play a role in politics, if they plan to get back to India or provide support to another candidate who is closer to the masses in the constituency......

Most of NRIs that I have met USA are insecured and not so confident kind. Also many do not feel positive about India's future. 4 out of 5 NRIs follow only one aspect economics $1=Rs 46/47/48.... Though they are highly educated they neither understand social and/or economic condition of India and the world. If you feel that these guys can change India, think again.
