In Germany they are considering a law that would ban employers from mining information on prospective job candidates from social networking sites such as Facebook to protect people's privacy.

Would you want a potential employer digging something like this up from your Facebook or Flickr page?

Would you want a potential employer digging something like this up from your social networking account?

According to the bill, employers would be able to use publicly accessible information about applicants drawn from the Internet but not from social networking sites that serve "communication purposes. Social websites related to work, such as Xing and LinkedIn, can be used by employers. The aim of the draft act is to stop private information from becoming public.

What do you think people, should organizations stop using social networking sites for hiring?

I don't think they should use social netwoking sites like facebook and orkut for checking their prospective employers as those are not the sites which gives you a real picture of them, they are there just to share things which are personal with their known ones and there is nothing that you get professional stuff there, if you really want to do a proper background check then they should visit sites like linkedin, toostep, which is there for professional stuff only. here they will get their all the logical thinking abilities. Just because you saw some offensive or objectionable stuff of theirs in their social networking account will not give you the exact picture. And we will loose out on potential candidates here.

Yes.I support you Mr J.Ram. But I fail to understand what is wrong if the employer/prospective employer tries to peep into our attitude or our views or our connections in order to make judgments foolproof. Already, the information being digged into is PUBLIC.After all, this exercise must be in the interest of the institution and the candidate concerned.

I love to be enlightened further.

Janki you are to the point. The social networkin sites are private for some of the people.

Hence sites like linkdin or toostep mey be used being absulutely meant for professionals.

Anything designed and developed has a purpose - the root cause behind the design. If a site is developed for showcasing one's professional skills and achievements then mining info from such a site is ok...eg Linkedin.

However look at it from an employer's point of view. Al he gets from such sites is your claims.....that is all they are.....YOUR claims! If a site can host the data and host it in a verified manner, that would probably save the employer a lot of grief and trouble. As things presently stand....I dont think it is correct for employers to rely on data from sites like facebook.

AS LONG AS AN INDIVIDUAL IS ASSOCIATED WITH AN ORGANISATION WHATEVER ONE PERSONALLY ALSO HAS AN IMPACT ON THE IMAGE AND GOODWILL OF THE ORGANISATION.NOTHING WRONG IN KNOWING THE OTHER SIDE OF AN ASSOCIATE/EMPLOYEE EITHER GOOD OR BAD.

We can not, totally, set aside social networking sites such as Facebook. Facebook gives expression to individuals to develop good communication among one's closed loops such as college networking, organizational network, professional network groups. Bringing these elements to share their ideas / thoughts (may be provoking sometime among themselves) but not with those who are not in the loop. So, for hiring guys for the jobs can not be denied, just because, he provoked somebody in one's loop. In addition to, what is submitted by the individuals, can also be obtained using portals such as Facebook for scrutinizing the applicant for certain jobs to study further, provided the individual supplied as supporting evidence.

Mr. Janaki, you will agree with me there is a method of qualifying guys for job by PAST WORK HISTORY STUDY (e.g ASME 31.8Q). To adopt these kind of methods, positive behaviour highlighted in there, can be taken for granted.Social networking is to go on long way. It need not be blocked as German is doing. But,  I condemn exploiting personal information for misuse.
