In a recent technological development, Japanese phone giant KDDI has developed an application that tracks even the tiniest movement of the user and beams the information back to HQ. Researchers say that activities such as walking, climbing stairs or even cleaning can be identified.  And they are trying to promote this technology to many organisations to track what their employees are doing in office.

According to KDDI, the main aim of the system is to enable employees to work more efficiently and managers to easily evaluate their employees' performance while away from the office. So, what do you think people, should organisations use spying technologies to monitor employees? Share your views on this...

Are we slaves?  This is what I felt when I read the article in the first place, I mean how can they spy on their employees, if they are not performing it will be clearly visible who ever is handling the team, this somewhat resembles a reality TV show that airs on TV called "Big Brother" or "Big Boss" where the contestants are under constant monitoring and spying on them. This clearly invades ones privacy, may be Japanese are not great at their work culture but others are doing their job in the right way and have earned that confidence from their higher authorities such that there is no need of constant monitoring and spying on their employees.  This will surely create a breach of privacy issue among employees for sure.

It's a sign of bad management if they are going to use spying tools on their employees.

If you can't control your people, what the hell are you doing then in a management position!? Why do does such manager receive salary? His boss can better replace him with that spying toy. And talking about managers, maybe the chief of the company must monitor his managers better; maybe with also such a toy?

A normal human is able to focus him or herself for not more then 20 minutes a day. When you measure productivity, then you discover alarming things. A normal employee with uninteresting work has a productivity line of 10-15% of the day. When the work is interesting, the productivity line goes to 40-60%.

When the employee works in a team with interesting people, 10 points above the productivity!

When the employee works under a good manager, 20 points above the productivity

When the employee knows that the company spies on him with their little toys, productivity stays stable (20% and you work exactly what is required from you; the minimum) and not one bit more. Everything will go then official; when the manager is not keeping himself on the rules, the employee does not need to act, etc. You get then - what we call- the Italian strike. Keep busy and don't produce much.

Everyone just keep saying "No one is perfect", and so no one strive for perfection which leads to imperfection. Its a belief and need not be reminded. When the debate is not at our side, I noticed lot of us just keep saying "No one is perfect", instead of opposing with strong points, which is won't be happening cause there are no points but ego. And that creates more problems in productivity. Spying gives behavioral study of the employee, and in return the employee will get to know the weak points and can work on it to improve, which is beneficial to both, himself and the organisation

Here are top five reasons to use an employee monitoring software:

  • Deploying a spy tools helps to find out how responsible employees are for decreased productivity. With it employee desktop activities can be tracked and the monitoring authority can know how much time of the total working hours is actually spent on working.

  • Helps to track employees, who are responsible for data theft and sensitive business information transfer. This way expensive lawsuit against the organization can be avoided and the guilty employees can be sent behind the bars.

  • Proper and prolific utilization of organizational resources can also be attained using an effective spy tool. Employees, who use organizational resources for doing their personal work can be tracked and controlled.

  • Time wastage by employees can be avoided. However, spy tools provide the facility to monitor employee activities secretively but you can notify your employees about this. By doing so employees will become more conscious and will not waste time in unnecessary and unproductive activities.

  • Since internet resources have become an essential component of routine work in organization, employees get the privilege to use internet resources without any limitation. Once online activities of employees are monitored, a line for usage of internet resources can be drawn.

If the organization spying their employees only when they are on work , i.e., spying working hours in their offices.and take it only as some extra evidence to judge the employee performance and efficiency. Because it shows a team work  at a micro level inside the organization, which way a team works, how they interact with each other and what the team members feel about their team and work assigned to them and their bonding between their teammates and what problems they don't share easily with organization and someone scared them or any other circumstances that degrades their efficiency to work. It also help the organization to take any legal action against those having bad behaviors and indiscipline.

Every company has the liberty to design its policies to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of information. So as to attain its objective it can go to any extent possible in implementing the relevant technology.

Being said so, which is quite generic in meaning, lets come to the use of spying or activity monitoring technology that we are referring to here in this discussion. Here is a product available in the market - http://www.softactivity.com/employee-monitoring.asp

Every technology product has its own applications. Hence, the same for the application of this technology too. They are NOT suggesting that this application should be applied to all Information technology industry (Software Company). All it says is about its feature and what can be done with this technology. So if a company need to maintain confidentiality of all information that is being used and it can go for this type of products.

Let me quote few examples, say that, there is research going on nuclear technology, mission to mars, research on the development technology to mutate human beings organs, a new privately owned Operating System (i.e., not a open source based license), analysis of stocks and shares,... So at all these places an employees are asked to maintain confidentiality of work being done. In fact, there would be expectation that even mobile phone are not allowed inside the premise.

So do you still think that its like monitoring slaves if company uses Activity monitoring application to monitoring its employees. Do you feel that an organization would having so much of extra money to monitor its employees simply without any reason :-) If a employee wants to cheat its manager or organization or system, they can cheat with some trick, but with these kind products it empower companies to (hopefully) meet its objective.

Spying on your employees can seem very rude in most employees view but it is necessary in the world we live in today. With more and more people taking cubicle and office jobs it’s giving more of a chance for employees to slack off. A lot of people employed in an office or cubicle job will waste time on the internet during work hours and if you aren’t spying on them through some means then you won’t have a very good efficiency rate.

According to a recent survey by the American Management Association, reported by the Los Angeles Times, more than three quarters of all companies, 76 percent, monitor employee use of the web, and more than half store and review email messages and computer workstation files. More than half of surveyed companies also track phone numbers called and the duration of those calls and half conduct video surveillance of their workforce. Another study found that 92 percent of all corporations conduct some form of secret spying on their employees.

In India, the employees are in practice of utilizing their work hours  (paid for) for their personal appointments, may be its by mobile or net, a higher percentile is used to pick-up tiny useful office items for their personal use. This is not seen in America. US bound employees are very strict about their work hours and sincere, which results into higher output.

Hence, not as a practice, but to keep employees scared off, the spying would be helpful in improving the output and maintaining the profitability of the company.

I think this is not a new thing for employees, many of the sales people in India are being tracked by GPS systems given to them to know their whereabouts when their are doing their work, and I am really feeling sorry for all the employees who will be subjected to such thing in future and that is happening mainly because the horrible work culture that asia has. With no real effort they want to enjoy all the luxuries, with this technology it will be a boon for employers and managers to know what their team is really doing are they really performing the task given to them.  So than using spying word in the title of the debate, it should just be monitoring employees.

Spying in this way will contradict the privacy of the employees and they will feel uncomfortable consequently the performance will be lower. There are other techniques like performance appraisal and there's other staff to keep an eye on the working so why is the need of spying on the employee like this. This may increase the efficiency in ths short term but in the long term this policy will lead the company to decline. But I support use of this technique on the employees who are suspected to do some harm to the company. Certain evidences should be there against that employee before using this.

Spying technology to monitor employees creates unhealthy environment which creates a barrier in th relationship b/w employer and employees. Employees do not get the independent environment where one can think beyond expectation and make a difference for the company. It reduces the efficiency of an employees and increases the attrition rate as no human being can work continuously for 10 hrs without having a jovial environment and good relationship with their colleagues.

That indicates the unhealthy relationship between employee and employer. Where the trust level is very low you see management doing micro-management. In this case, the productivity will also go down. If the trust level is high then you do not need to do the micromanagement. In that case Management can focus on more higher level goals. It has been observed that here employees are more creative. Yes there may be few people who may misuse this freedom but you cannot punish all the employees’ just because of few. Those employees can be treated in a different ways to bring them back to focus.

Monitoring somebody is not only steeling privacy but also no trust on employee. When an employer does not have trust on their employee then how they can do business. The business activity is mainly depends on the trust.

Constant monitoring of an employee by an employer or by a manager is only helpful to increase there rating, but on the other front as being constantly watched by some higher authorities it may decrease the efficiency of an employees due to huge amount of pressure incurred by this monitoring process and it may lead to higher attrition.

Get work out of the employees, but don't try to invade into thier privacy! Monitoring activites such as 'walking' would really stress out the empoyee. I'll tell you for once, I work for a Japanese client, they're workaholic, and life means work for them, thish could suit them but not for us Indians. Life means much more to us than just work!

Organizations need not use spying technology just for the sake of enabling their performance. After all employees are not machines to gauge their performance. Instead, organizations should invest their efforts to empower, motivate, encourage, train their employees to delivery better performance inline with the business objectives & goals of the respective organizations as well as goals set.

Without having appropriate policies, processes in place & appropriate mechanism for implementation and improvement of the system, organizations wont get the desired level of performance as a system  even after deploying spying tools etc.

No one is perfect, no not one; all people forget about God. Please do not think this a secular reply. But it does draw from an argument that no one is perfect. We are all human and imperfect. Having said this, I feel that one should invest trust in people and forgiveness of dereliction of duties. We are all imperfect, make mistakes, and will fail each other. Learning to forgive and work with others in a manner that workers will support your activities voluntarily and with enjoyment in their work is usually the optimum manner. I am trying to learn and apply some principals of "Doing Business by the Good Book: 52 Lessons on Success from the Bible, by David L. Steward" into my life. My learning of this is not perfect by any means but I do try to re-apply spiritual principals into my life and work ..

There are other spiritual books on business that can be discovered and incorporated into ones life.

I Agree with Kiran. The world is for innovations and the Nuclear Bomb is the unavoidable discovery of scientist. Same way the engineers keep doing research and produce on or other product. KDDI has also done the same for We to discuss. In fact the product is a product, how you use it, depends.

As per Mr. Yokohama of KDDI, ""Of course there are privacy issues and any employers should really enter into an agreement with employees before using such a system. But this is not about curtailing employees' rights to privacy. We'd rather like to think our creation more of a caring, mothering system rather than a Big Brother approach to watching over citizens."

The details of the KDDI's product can be viewed on the following link;http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8559683.stm

I think, the whole story or arguments is encircled with additional discussion on 'What are the norms for employees, through which the employer need not to think of spying his employees.'

Before considering the use or non-use of a technology, first we must ask why? What for is it used? Is it to spy on an employee's time at the office? Is it to spy because the management is doubting about an employee's trustworthyness?

I think with these questions answered, there will be no need to use a separate product, the existing process can be used effectively.
