I agree with the all people who have supported this part of the argument. In the current market scenario it is seen that doctors are given hefty gifts ranging from house hold items to laptops and foreign trips. As if this has become a trend in promoting the medicines. This is unethical as this impedes the fair competition between different players in the market. The startup and small pharmaceutical companies are struggling to make their position in the market as they cant stand the big players in the market. And what more gradually the result is even these companies though small follow the line of giving gifts to doctors. Ultimately this affects the common man. In the country like India there are many people who cannot afford the medicines prescribed by the doctors. Obviously higher the prescribed medicine higher the gift/bribe. But bringing the change in the whole system is quite difficult. The big pharmaceutical companies should understand that a fair chance should be given even to small companies as the quality can be maintained as well with the affordable price.

Giving gifts to Doctors is an old practice, though it is bad (it is something like accepting a bribe) What can we do about it ? Thank you Virag for the referral.

I agree withh all of your opinion which below mentioned but i would like to more thing that ultimately acceptance is shown by DRs. DRs are ready to take all these thing, they are accept, they are demand from MR/ company's and company's are give support to those doctors. Untill doctors are not realized themselves, there will no make any change...

I agree with Indu's views. Providing various types of gifts/facilities(like foreign trips etc) is not at all fair.Firstly it is a question  of ethics and then B A D trade practice.

The gifts can affect the medicine in terms of quality, and the medicines will be equivalent to mere soil, because of the cost of gifts.

The costly gifts are given generally to the private medical practitioners, as in public sectors, it is restricted above some limit.Obviously all the pharmaceutical companies making lots of CORRUPT DOCTORS.

Yes, gifts definitely influence prescription to a greater extent.  Instead of prescribing an economical brand, doctor prescribes a costly brand and patients are taxed which otherwise can easily be avoided. Therefore these gifts should be stopped.

If giving gifts influence the prescription behaviour of dr then its very easy for any pharma company to survive in the market.Prescriptions are always written on the merit of medicines.and if we have question on quality then we are the leading generic pharmaceutical producers with maximum USFDA approved plants after US itself.India provides antibiotics and Anti AIDS medicines to developing countries at very affordable prices. So, i think there are no issues of quality.
