Should the focus of project managers be on tying all the knots for a project/delivery or should they get more inside the technical development angle

Project Managers doesn't have much time to get into technicality, he should focuse on product life cycle management rather than anything else. But Project managers need to understand enough about the technology so that they can make tradeoff decisions about what will actually make it into the release.

They can't be independent of technical bias if they are dealing with a IT industry..!

In IT they must know the technicalities and inside-out of the product details, the project resource planner, the reasons for delay in release, manpower justification based on the technical competencies of the staff, etc.. And for that a background of being an IT PRO is necessary..

I believe..!!

Managing something which you understand well will fetch better result and team management as well. You may not have enough time to devote on the technical issues to fix them, but you should understand the criticality and possible guidance to fix them quickly.

I building constrction manager can't manage an IT project well due to lack of his visibility on the technical process of the project.

I agree Samir..The person must have idea ofn technology so that Project does not fall prey to the technical experimentation of a person/group

I agree to the arguement. Although I am not from the IT industry and dont have much know how about it, but what I understand from this is that anybody who is involved in some work should be given total control of whatever he/she wants to do in order to meet their objectives or targets. A person might be brilliant in technology and keeps track of technologies constantly doesnt mean that he/she is obtaining the desired results, on the other hand, a person might not at all be aware of the technicalities involved in the work but is equally competant in terms of practical & feild-based knowledge. Thus, technology is important in this modern age but anyone capable of excelling in a project without technological aid should be given an equal stance.

Technical bias can harm the overall project perspective and also lead to rework

While doing MBA / PMP, there is always a subject to choose for specialization!

In Projects, you must have good exposure/ experience to any of your field, so in IT, exposure is a must for a successful project manager. And IT is one of the industry where technicalities of managers really counts. And other can't survive. Haven't seen a single case yet. Hence voting for NO.
