Nalini Sriharan, who has been in prison for about 19 years now in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, an advisory board constituted by the Tamil Nadu government is understood to have agreed to recommend her “premature release” from jail. Arrested on June 14, 1991, she was sentenced to death, along with 25 others, by a special court here on January 28, 1998. However, the SC confirmed death only on four of the convicts, including Nalini, on May 11, 1999.

Her death sentence was commuted to life by the TN governor based on Nalini’s clemency plea, Sonia Gandhi’s public statements and advice from the state cabinet, in April 2000. On Wednesday, Nalini appeared before the board saying she had already spent nearly 19 years in prison weighed heavily on the minds of the board members. That she has a girl child and her husband too is in jail awaiting execution, was also considered by the board comprising the collector, district judge, probation officer, and the superintendent of the Vellore prison for women.

So I would like to ask the users in this platform seeing all the consequences, do you think Nalini should be freed?

Why are we so microscopic in our views??

The woman has served 19years of her life in prison already just awaiting the result of the case. I am in fact angry with our judiciary for taking such a long time to conclude 'AN OPEN AND SHUT CASE'. Why werent they clued to finish it off faster?? Whay wasnt our judiciary capable of understanding that the MURDERER of our EX PRIME MINISTER is still languishing in jail without justice?? Why are we blaming the woman after 18 years? Is our police force incapable of building the case at all??

These are my questions albeit from the other side of the coin. This is not with any emotion towards the lady in question, but with an emotion that is experiencing the lack of discipline in our judiciary!! I am with Himanshu!

NOT AT ALL....

It means, if the case for Ajmal Kasab goes on (which is quite possible looking at the pace of our judicial system), 19 years down the line,  he will also request and will be released...!!!!!!!!!!..

THIS IS OUR COUNTRY, not a DUMPING GROUND FOR TERRORISTS.....we already have millions dying wih scarcity of food, shelter, water...better to help them..rather than our taxed money going to take care of such anti-social elements...if her husband is waiting for execution..its his deeds....

Why not Sheetal? Was 19 years not enough for making her realise her crime? With the pace Indian system works, the case would never get closed. Yes, every crime has a punishment attached to it but the only thing we donot attach is the time limit to conclude the case. I seriously feel that in case the police, jail authorities and the effected agree, she should b FREED - yes with condions attached if the need be.

Let Law decide on this.

Constitution has laws to decide on these situations.

The decisions on such matters are not done by opinion poll.

I think yes she should be freed. She has already paid for her deeds for 19 years as she admitted. Moreover, the prohibition officer has already said that Nalini has shown a good conduct. We also should see her condition. She has a daughter whose father also has been sentenced to death. I think seeing all these situation and thinking of her daughter's future, she should be freed.

NO..IF THEY DID SOME THING WROMG ..THEY MUST BE PUNISHED ACCORDING TO THIER CRIME...THERE MUST BE NO COMPROMISE ..OR EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENTS TO CRIMINALS..IF SHE DID WRONG..SHE HAVE TO SUFFER..N IF THERE IS A QUESTION OF HER DAUGHTER OR HUSBAND ..SO SHE KNEW IT VERY WELL THAT SHE IS IN A JAIL..IT WAS HER DESICION TO GAVE BIRTH TO HER CHILD ...SO DOSN'T MATTER ...SHE SHOUD NOT BE RELEASED.

Let the court decide, whether she has to be set free. These are polictical gimmics and making it an issue. This thing was not raised till now and suddenly the Politicians are remembering her and going to meet her in jail, this is just to get political millage...

Please let the court decide...

Let the law decide on this one. There can be no fair justice when politics get mixed with the law. It was intent to kill. One should consider that the ex- prime minister's life was snuffed out. I am sure the lady in question knew that once caught she would have to face the brunt of the law. She should have thought of her daughter before committing this terrible act. I have no sympathy for terrorists.

If it is about emotion..Then I do not know what to say..it's debatable.

But whatever the reason may be.

One sentenced to death should not be freed for any emotion.

That's mockery of constitution.

If you are aginst life sentence..then change the law.

But do not change the verdict.

Not at all! Whatever her problems may be. But fact is fact. She is a terrorist who killed our ex-prime minister. It was Sonia Gandhi's greatness that she took pity and reduced her punishment. But if we still take this case lightly, then terrorists will get confidence of attacking important leaders of our country. Already we are famous as a tolerant nation because of which, we have been paying a lot. If still we don't show intolerance, attacks on us will increase in future years. So, I think, Nalini should never be freed.
