Similar to number portability in Telecom, a customer should be able to switch between banks based on service/costing/other criteria.

Yes, it should be allowed..Whether it is CASA or loans etc, he should be able to transfer all his relationships and get the best deal. This will increase the competition among banks and take customer service levels to the next level.

Abhijeet amazing debate, thanks for initiating.

According to me it should not be allowed in banking sector.  In telecom industry the amount of loss incurred will be less compared to banks. Apart from that it is difficult to maintain the records for the customers and there are many problem in implementing this. For example customer take loan from one bank and after few days he will change the bank saying the service is not good. What will the bank do in this case. So its not advisable to implement.

Thanks.....

RBI should allow the number portability between the banks.

It is a very good concept and ofcourse possible in current IT age. Now we are availing the core banking facility, then why not account. It will ease many the complexities... Why do we want to stick on the old hectic methods, let's think something innovative, to save time and money. Let the computers take care the hectic things, as human being can think of the future enhancements...

This is an excellent idea.  All procedural difficualties can be easily overcome in this computerised age.  A lot of unwanted accounts can be weeded out in the banking system.

This is a very welcome idea!  If at all some operational difficulties are expressed as an obstacle in implementing this, we can easily get over them in this computerised age.  This is no doubt consumeristic, but a lot of unwanted accounts can be weeded out in the banking system.

Yes, Telecom System in India is an eye opener and one of the most practical and tested example or reference point for all other sectors to study the benefits of competition.  Though Number portability in telecom is not yet implemented, the very thought of it makes the service provider to become more customer focussed and quality oriented.

Account portability from financial instruments is a little complicated matter, however a serious thought on implementing this has to be given as it will create a competitive advantage for banks with good quality service and greater attention to all customers.

Today, banks are on the loose.  The more a customer is willing to pay, the more they are willing to service.  The less a person is able to manage finances, the more he is forcefully  squeezed out in form of various penalties and charges.  But if it is a service or fault on the bank's end, mostly in small accounts, they still stand to win as small account holders don't go for litigation and even if they do so, the chances of them winning is remote in terms of the cost of opportunity.

There will be a drastic change to these factors once account portability sets in.  As mentioned by Abhijeet, it should not be limited to CASA, but should be applicable to all banking Instruments like - any kind of loans, deposits, accounts etc.,  Since implementation is complex on other instruments, they can start with CASA.

Bebefits: Quality of service will improve greatly, cost of services will drastically reduce, sharing of ATM's will become free for customers or atleast quality and reliability of ATM's will improve.  Finelines on all bank papers will become bold and systems more transparent.  Customers stand to benefit on loyalty to the bank etc etc.,

THUS I SUPPORT THE IDEA OF ACCOUNT PORTABILITY

As it is bank's are doing it, perhaps it is not number portability but the saga of take overs of loan accounts has been there for long in the loans/advances.  As for the deposits cut throat competition is in place for luring the depositors, what more can be achieved by this number portability, is already in practice

I suppose you know their is a KYC policy even in telecom!!!! Anyway, once allowed, how account portability is to be handled will initiate a different discussion with various experts.

I strongly believe it should be allowed to offer wider choice to the customer, increase competition and better customer service levels.

Black money or parallel economy is a different argument. There are ways to handle it. Mainly it requires POLITICAL WILL.

Number portability in telecom is being allowed to increase competition and ensure better customer service. It also gives the cust the choice not to get stuck with 1 service provider.

As a bank customer, why should I stay with a bank that is inefficient? Why should I not get the best terms and the best service!!!!

" Loan take over/s by Banks " are prevailing. But .. that that is not ( Account Number ) portability.

U asked for 'portability' or A/c number portability ? Portabilty of a/c number, in case of Telcos give the owner of the Number freedom to change the service provider without loosing the number. That is the most amazing facility enjoyed by the subscriber ... s/he does not loose the number ... !!

If U ask for "account portability" hat may mean something different. Now CASA discussed here :

So many banks, so many ownership patterns, so many different service charges ( big differene in case of PSBs and Private/s ), different 'Delegation Powers' in different Banks, different Minimum Balance criteria etc etc.. Dont say that it is not possible but before that RBI should bring parity of charges all Banks at par. Danger points : Banks enjoy some autonomy - that will be gone and we would have to return in old days when RBI used to controll every aspects of Banking.

If we propose A/c Number portability in CASA, meaning change of Bank and no change in number, the technology on CBS is not ready at the moment. Different servers of different Banks are not conected at the moment. In case of RTGS and NEFT it is done through RBI server. Consumers be aware : when different Banks connect their servers, though no proposal as yet, all the confidentiality might be gone.

Other types of A/cs : It seems difficult at this point of time. Detailed discussion elsewhere.

They should not allow account portability as this will create more confusion to the already big mess. Imagine a situation where one bank ensure that all its NPA's are transferred to another bank ... the risk of bankruptcies will go up . KYC issues may take over. The time and effort required will be the same...

In Telecom the decision was taken coz customer was facing difficulty in changing their permanent no., so they were going with their previous no. in spite of unsatisfactory services. But in the case of bank one usually doesn't have such condition coz usually we havn't given our bank account no. to every body.

I think RBI will not allow account portability becuase it will increase the danger of insecure transaction. Also How will bank make sure about KYC(know your customer norms. It will also increase the black money trasaction.

I think RBI will not be allowing the same for the following reasons since banks will demand

1. Autonomy to lending and borrowing rates to bank management
2. No control on monetary policy by RBI
3. Accountibility of customers
4. Blowing up of social security net of customers
leading to complicated banking rules and regulations due to continuous loss for banks and low loyalty of customers causing bank bankruptcy & closure , mergers and return of govt autonomy and control leading us 60 years behind to where we started from ..... think this angle!

i think it wont work as in the Telecom industry. In telecom it is only the change of number mainly but in the case of bank it is worth millions of money and different types of buisinesses. it will be almost difficult to properly maintain the way in which banks are dealing now with customers.
