Recently, the minorities in Madhya Pradesh have criticised plans to introduce the Bhagvad Gita in state-run schools, saying the scriptures of other religions should also be part of the syllabus. When the state government said 'The Bhagvad Gita is a treasure of knowledge. Children should be imparted the knowledge of the Gita and there should be no politics over it, 'The Gita is a part of our tradition and culture and there is nothing wrong in studying it.

http://www.cwrl.utexas.edu/~bump/603B08/web/Avni/Avni%20Mody%27s%20Portfolio/Gita%20I_files/bhagavad-gita-front%255B1%255D.jpg

Bringing fundamentalism in anything and everything is not correct Its an instrument of knowledge and therefore there is nothing wrong in introducing it in schools and said not to see it from a communal angle, the minorities opposed it saying its wrong to introduce the religious book of one community in the school curriculum. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government here had earlier faced opposition from the minorities over making 'Surya Namaskar' (sun salutation) and yoga mandatory in its schools. It has also been at loggerheads with the minority communities over the singing of the national song 'Vande Mataram'.

So users, do you think religious scriptures should be taught in schools?

If the religious scripture is based on true spirituality (like MahaVad) then it is OK.

All of you had given your excellent views and i also agree with you but all of us are Indian & know about India very well. Different schools, different society, different traditions, different locations would not allow us for this. India has the combination of maximum religions in world. Is it feasible that we are teaching scriptures of different religions under one roof. Imagine about it.

And there are so many religious schools which are already teaching scriptures related to religions but why we are not admitting our children in same. Because we need academic education for growth & knowledge not for creating issues for future in India.

I believe every Religious Scripture focuses on  the Basic elementary  Disciplines & describes the way the life has to be led by an individual,  may it  be Bible , Vedas , Quran ,torah , you name it .  As the Modern world seem to be  in all sorts of immoralities , discriminations , Hunt for Supremacy , the importance of scripture Learning has become the need of the hour to transform our system .

Thus to bud the same in School may be like injecting the goods at roots to Harvest the future .

Being citizens of the seventh largest, second-most populous, and the most populous democracy in the world, we Indians elect politicians from various parties to form state and national governments. Governments come and go, so do changes the earlier had effected. Talking of MP where BJP has been in power for quite some time, proposing and making such changes is quite easy a job, and that too in all state-run schools. Keeping all faith in our education system, I am sure that the effected change shall be scrapped no sooner an alternate government is elected.

So instead of making the religious scriptures a part of the syallabus, it would be better to start a subject titled RELIGION. This would not only give appropriate platform for teachers to spread the knowledge across religions but create more job avenues too. The inclusion of proposed subject should be in all schools / boards, state-run or otherwise.

Of-course Yes,

And why only Shrimad Bhagavad Gita there are lots of such great spiritual Books.

In all these books four supreme teachings are there individual self, God, Relationship between the two, & liberation of individual self.

In short i would i like to write few points which i learnt from my IMTP (Indian Management Thoughts & Practices) subject when i was in BMS -

Know the Real World & Real You.

Stability of Your Mind

Practice Wisdom, Dharma, Yog

Cultivate the quality of purity, Ethics

And one can learn many many good aspects of being a Human Being. If i would like to say in a corporate language, "It will make you Proactive instead of just Active"

it is obvious to teach younger children about the religious fundamentals and scriptures in  school life, as it does major impact on religious behaviour of the child in future as well as present.

In Convent schools the Catholics have a subject and class on catechism and the Non-Catholics study moral formation.

If the teachings of Bhagwat Gita is introduced as Moral Formation is school education, which should not be treated as a burden on the children, as they are already pressurised with the main subjects and competition.

In KV’s the Prayers that are conducted already have Sholaks of Gita, and that is not a burden to the children. At-least if the education board is practicing to inculcate some moral values in schools that should be appreciated instead of hindered.

I would like to quote a line from " Purusha Suktha " which says " Vedaha mekam purusham mahantam, adityavarnam, tamasah parastat " which when translated according to " Akshara Shastra " means; According to all the Vedas, Purusha is the greatest of all forms of beings. He is the one who holds the capacity to generate the energy equal to Sun. If we all came into existence after the Big-Bang, that means everything was created from the parts of Sun. So everything in universe share its energy, chemical compositions etc in varied combination. For eg: A piece of chalk piece broken into A, B, C, D and carved into different shapes. Are they different ? just because they look different. But if you have a deeper understanding they share the same chemical compositions, they have atoms; nucleus, electrons, protons.

This is exactly in accordance to Newtons Law which says " Energy can neither be created, nor be destroyed. But can be converted from one form to another." So, forms can change, but the basics remain the same.

And this is what our ancient scripts have been teaching us, but have been Misquoted from a very long time. Ancient scripts are more so in Accordance with Science. Only we have to start understanding the scientific meaning behind those scripts.

The theory of Dis-similar has caused such confusions that we perceive everything in universe to be different, but forget where these things came from. Probably one will understand the broader meaning by doing Reverse Engineering.

But of course, teaching any ancient scripts without thorough scientific understanding has its wrong implications, as it may become a weapon in the hands of some Religious Wrong-doers.

Students have the right to pray individually or in groups or to discuss their religious views with their peers so long as they are not disruptive. Because the Establishment Clause does not apply to purely private speech, students enjoy the right to read their Bibles or other scriptures, say grace before meals, pray before tests, and discuss religion with other willing student listeners. In the classroom students have the right to pray quietly except when required to be actively engaged in school activities (e.g., students may not decide to pray just as a teacher calls on them). In informal settings, such as the cafeteria or in the halls, students may pray either audibly or silently, subject to the same rules of order as apply to other speech in these locations. However, the right to engage in voluntary prayer does not include, for example, the right to have a captive audience listen or to compel other students to participate.

I do agree for the cause, but there should be Scriptures from all the Major Religions of the Nation. Apart from Hindu scriptures, Muslim, Sikh & Christian scriptures should also be a part of the Curriculum.

All, of them are Goo source of Knowledge.

religion should be taught at school. why hide behind minority, be bold and say christains, to the day, convent school has a biblestudy and it is compulsory for all students,

All kids going to english schools learn gods-love and father abraham, so why this reluctance towards Bhagwat gita? I would say basic personal religion in the early age, then comparitive religious studies should be taught.

I have enclosed a link of an old blog of mine.

According to your statement, it looks like that you can make anyway you like. And that is the difference between teaching Gita and not teaching it.

Dear Mr. Kubal ,

I would like to oppose you on two points :

1.  Education is not merely to enable people to make a living ; if that were so , we would not have philosophers. There is a pleasure in knowing about the world , about ourselves , and about how we fit into the scheme of things. Education should first and foremost make every child self-reliant for life , so that they continue to learn all their lives. Education should keep alive the curiosity and wonder that is in every child. Education should help us appreciate the greater things in life. To an uneducated person , Shakespeare's works are no different from nursery rhymes.

2.  Secondly , learning about religions is not going to make saints out of all of us , just as learning about art does not make all of us a Picasso.

I think my answer would be a equivocal YES.

Equivocal because the scriptures do not necessarily define a religion. Surely Hinduism and Christianity and Islam should be discussed as religions because billions of people are their followers. And because most religions , including the minor ones , teach morality as the cornerstone of life.

I am all for teaching about religions and their virtues , as the basis for a moral life.

Teaching scriptures becomes a controversial point because how much is enough ? How do you say that the Bhagavad Gita is superior to the Bible or the Koran ? If you accept that they are all equal , then how do you ensure that their treatment in classes is on par and unbiased ? The teacher who teaches the Bhagavad Gita may be slightly critical of the Bible and the Koran , or the other way round.

I think they should be. Religious scriptures, mainly Bhagwadgita is a sea of knowledge. Teaching it to children with teach them morality in life which today's society needs badly.

religious scriptures should not be taught in school. our country is a secular country. every citizen has a right to follow his religion.  instead moral values should be given more emphasis. and education should be made career oriened. students be made well versatile. they should be made more focussed in their approach.

This is ridiculous. Children should be sent in schools to get education that will help them to earn living. Why are we trying to make them saints?
