Students can be allowed to grade the teachers. However, a lot of maturity and insight is involved before the grading can be done. A key component in this aspect is the basis of the rating. The legend or the rating scale should clearly reflect the basis of the rating. This will ensure that bias is not present in the rating. Additionally, this is only part of the 360 degree evaluation feedback that could also be considered from fellow peers and other members. However, historical data indicates that there have been more cases of abuse than benefit of this system. This may be due to lack of maturity and the usage of this system to blame the member. Thus, in case this system is implemented then adequate controls need to be in place to ensure that the aim of the system is basically to improve the teaching methodology and it is not to find fault with any member. Ultimately, only one person needs to exercise the authority and it is the teacher. This system basically ensures that this authority is exercised in a rational manner without bias and it gives a leverage for the student to express his frank and unbiased opinion of the teaching methodology. However, a lot of discretion needs to be exercised before implementing this system on account of the major pitfalls present......

Why not. We need to change, let govt. pays performance based pay to the Teachers. Some junk teachers are sitting in our society and controlling the students by threat. It's good initiative. Let us start.

Studenst need to rate teachers adn it can be doen from standard 4 onwards They need to be asked questions and answer shoudl be in yes or no, please do understand the students of lower standards will be more true than the students of higher standards Based on the rating the teacher can decide where he /she needs to improve

it is a two way process. students may not have the required level of maturity. this can be checked by an independent body. this way teachers will be able to know where they stand & can make improvements or changes which will be good for shishu & guru. the best guru is one who can impart knowledge. someone who can pass on knowledge which he has/ acquired. what use is the most intelligent person if he cannot pass on his knowledge, that is greatness, one who can selflessly give knowledge to others.

My experience of being graded by my students has generally been good. Most students take it seriously. However, it all depends on the items that are included in the rating form and how the system is administered. It definitely should be anonymous as students will feel free to grade and also comment on their experience with their teacher. The comments should be helpful rather than cynical or outright disrespectful.

This is the problem Indians are facing of whenever the arrow comes towards thier head they oppose it but for others they shout for it.Be reducing summer vacation for judges, opening education to foreign university even IIM professor opposed it. I think it must be compulsory. Its already observed in Reliance school in Surat where all school students have give feedback of their teacher and based on thier feedback school decides whether to continue the teacher or not ?

@Nitin: With us, we have a 360deg feedback system. Students' feedback makes only a partial influence in teachers' performance evaluation.

@Sanoop: Here the intelligence of higher authorities comes to play a vital role. They must know how to differentiate between right and wrong feedbacks. Also, not all will go against a particular teacher at the same time.

Yes, why not. Teachers are also humans and prone to making mistakes. They need to know where they went wrong. Important it is to take the criticism positively and remain open to improvement.

The person who grades shall be superior to the person to whom they grade, ofcourse students are the benificieries and for that reason they may allowed to support the grading. Otherwise it will be a reverse mechanisam of the said principle of grading. Students may not have expert knowledge about grading, they aer also not in a position to understand the expertise of the teachers, they may be allowed to participate as a supporting role for grading.

Yes the schools should start getting feed back form the students about their teachers. This will help the students as well the teachers to improve their skills. The students should be able tell the good and bad things of their teacher. This two way feed back will bring some change in the education system. Especially this should be implemented in governments schools and immediate action should be taken. Thanks....

Yes, I believe that they should. Some professors are good and some aren't. I've been stuck with a lot of crappy teachers which killed my GPA, while others get the easy ones and fly right by. It's all based on the professor you have. Students should definitely be allowed to rate their teachers.

A categorization of STUDENTS would have made the debate more substantive. I am against giving an opportunity to ALL students to rate their teachers, for the incompatible gap between the appraisee and the appraiser in the case of some. Students of school age usually rate their teachers on parameters that may not be significant as far as the quality of teaching is concerned. They are too premature to guage the competence of a teacher instead tend to give importance to appearance, character etc. hope u will agree.

No not at all. As none can judge the expert and experience and all of the students are just ignorant of the things and if this malpractice
is going in any schools or institutions this must be stopped
come on what is going wrong in a country which boasts of the
richness of the culture and tradition and what are we going to
prove I think this is not a topic to be raised.

It is not students but commitee comprising successful educationist/teachers who know the child psychology and teaching methods should be entrusted with the task of grading the teachers. Parents can be taken into confidence and counselled to bridge the gap between the student and teachers. The interaction between the institution and parent should not lead to gap teachings/ teacher and student. I strongly feel that students should not be given the option to grade.

@PG, Thanks for thumb down to my statement ... is it a feedback to me?.. if so what kind of feedback it is? means what are the reasons forced you to thumb down me? I mean what was the wrong in my statement ... Please let me know to improve myself ... Now come to explanation about my statement .... I feel teacher or any person feedback must be based on his behaviour, approach, deployment techniques and result ... is it okay? Behaviour - social, friendly, punctual and caring ... what students will give feedback on these form ... students learn all those from teacher ... they bunk from class, come late, not attentive, do not even ask, not friendly with mates and not caring for themselves ... how they give feedback to teacher for those attributes which they have to learen from teacher. Approach and deployment techniques - how students come to know what approach is good to get full information from a teacher on a subject unless teacher teaches him? If they do not understand they can ask for more time ... but better they learn how to solve a problem as teacher solving... yes he can go for different innovative method ... again he is not able to give a feedback ...??? Result - it must be same ... wheather solved by a teacher or a student ... but how many students passed or failed may not be a criteria for feedback ... In all cases I do not find any reason, allow student to give a feedback to a teacher ... I am talking about an ideal situation .... Feedback is important for growth, but quality should be there and it can come from those who is having that knowledge, approach and behaviour ... Student feedback is not that important better to have a committee able to give a feedback with positive approach. Why this question is arising now a days? because education system has deteriorated already ... we do not have quality teachers and students also.

certainly NO.there are lot of other ways to get f/b for improvement.teacher is a teacher and vis- a- vis.teacher acts with a experience and student with just momentary intelligence can evaluate.

Mehul Ji good debate, I am really against it, I feel grading will spoil the relation between student & teacher, and that will be unfortunate becoz teachers plays very vital role in our most crusial growth phase. there has to be some dignity & strict lines between a proffessor & student. That does not mean that I am supporting the dominency of teachers. I don't deny if someday we can have a governing body which can keep a eye on teachers based on the students feedback indirectly. Thanks
