For many, life is just about earning money lots of money. It is believed that money can buy anything...and to some extent its true. People try many ways to earn money. Some even risk their live & families to earn their daily living.

So, should we be unethical to become rich??

If you are talking about Money.. then YES.. to much extent..

It depends what is the definition of "rich" in one's mind.

In terms of money, if you don't know how to do business, how to sell a stone on diamond rates, you can't be rich..! So ethically you have to drop certain level..

In terms of Knowledge.. Ethically you should be strong, then only you can be contended... I believe..!

The craze for making money and becoming rich never ends till death of a person. BUT, if some one wants to be unethical just to become rich, he should ask the following questions first to him/her:

1) How much is his/her actual need for him/her and family for Roti Kapda aur Maakan, plus a small percentage for unforeseen circumstances?

2) How much he wants to earn for himself/herself and his/her children?

3) If he/she wants to create treasure of wealth for him/her children by being unethical, would he/she not be becoming the cause of creation of a continued and long generation and legacy of corrupt and unethical heirs behind him/her?

4) Whether he/she would survive the brunt of law when caught and put behind the bars?

5) Would he/she not be losing his wealth of a model character and respect in the society?

6) What part of his/her richness or wealth he/she would be able to carry with him/her on death?

7) Would he not be creating a culture of legal fights amongst his/her heirs behind him/her, like that between the Ambani Brothers and Birla vs. Lodha?

If he/she answers such questions honestly, he/she need not become unethical.

The definition of 'How much money' and 'what is ethical' is never isolated or crisp. The two are always defined by what one has attained or seen as acceptable levels.

Mores and norms change with time and in different circumstances. Thus the debate is not one of morals or definitive . It is circumstantial and need based at times. No one wants to be seen as erring and unethical , but is so in a societal , moral or legal context. So also , no one wants to be (or actually is) poor given the set of resources of mind body and soul , but always acquires and needs more by the societal definition of getting richer and powerful.

It is thus never perpetually true that one is ethical by the same standards or rich by the same measure , and if the two parameters are elastic , there is no possibility of connecting one to the other as cause and effect.

Ethics is individual domain. If ethics are maintained then, it should be in all sphere of life, not by choosing an area.

Ethics are a very personal domain thingy...whats unethical to one may be ethicl to someone else...its situation based...there is no absoluteness about it...hence the appropriate answer would be that as far as your conscience is clear its fine...dont do anything against your conscience.

Absolutely not, even at at extreme cost. The goal is simpler when one wants to be happy and at peace, not rich.

The world we live in is very cruel. We have to learn the hard ways. Sometimes we have to be unethical & rude to earn money. Believe me the choice could be a life saving option for you & many.

And the world knows if you wanna get rich & earn easy money there are a lot of shortcuts.

First of all : it should be made known that a Middle Class member may not be "rich" in a single generation how far s/he goes unethical. Example :

- a salary earner, plain and vanila, Govt. / Private employee even in "sheddy" post/s

- an IT/BPO/ITES/ KPO employee

- a teacher/ an Engineer ( if not in business ) or a Doctor ( unless the Chairman of Medical Council etc )

Creation of wealth is not a matter of joke, Middle Class may go on dreaming, go on discussing such ideas with neighbours, coleagues and post questions on (Professional) sites.

So why we should go in unethical way ? If we know that our "aim" may not be fulfilled why bringing  all bad-fame for us in our life time ?

WE maintain ethics while becoming rich.  Too much concerned about becoming rich is not good, because we will live in tension and cannot lead a happy life and also contended life. Once we start   earning too much money we give up our families and loose our patience also.

No, we shouldn’t be unethical to get rich and I strongly believe that if you can get rich by being unethical then you can definitely get rich by maintaining ethics but this may take little longer time and down the stream you will feel proud of your success and at this stage you will not only be rich by money but rich in values, self respect, etc

Clearly, NO!!! RICH is not only related with money, if you are unethical..definitely you are not RICH. A person can be RICH only, if he/she has... 1. Great Values 2. Great Attitude 3. Great Money 4. Great Passion 5. Great Donater Just having money means you have qualified only one criteria. To Be RICH, one should qualify for all above criteria. Rashmi it seems you forgot what BAPU said "Means are as important as the Goals".  Can you enjoy such riches, most of the time you will be engaged in protecting such ill gotten riches from the various agencies of the government, from tricksters, fraudsters then finally from robbers, hooligans and so on so forth.  Drop the idea it is for your good

Thanks for the nice question Rashmi.

First we have to define ethical because it keeps changing with time. i.e. certain things that were considered unethical has now has become non-consequential issues now. Take bribery for instance - It has become very much prevalent and no one bothers now-a-days. In some cases unethical issues have even become  ethical.

But coming to the question, it is not necessary to be unethical to become rich. One need not lie or cheat in order to attain wealth. In fact now-a-days, wealth is distributed widely compared to say 50 years ago. Most people today have become rich because of being better educated and better informed (about good investment opportunities, etc.). Also, today you would find a lot of "Crorepatis" who are employees while earlier only businessmen could dream of becoming crorepatis.

One has to be alert to opportunities and grab them. One has to be well informed. One has to develop business development skills. etc. etc. Above all one has to be in the Right Place at the Right Time and have the Right Stars shining upon them. If these are present then one does not have to cheat or lie or do any other unethical thing to become rich.

Of course by being unethical one can become rich quickly, but is likely to loose a lot of other things in the process.

No, definitely not, to me the definition of ethical behavior can still be contested, as it is a comparative degree. So blaming riches to unethical practices is out of question. If we are serious to be rich and then sustain it is, we need to be ethical and professional in our conduct. However professionalism is also comparative degree so to me its nothing unethical about being rich. But some popular examples have spoiled name of all the rich in this case.

We donot have to become unethical to get rich- but the trend is a little differerent.
we see people resort to any means to get rich. infact even in the professional work-set, one tends to give a bad rating during apprisals for the said reason that
a good rating comes with a good pay-rise.
How cheap people are.....
