Decision has to based on the type of Application(s),  Requirement complexity, Generic vs Special Requirements (e.g. data formats), Customization Effort, cost of Support & Maintenance... so there is no simple answer for this. It needs evaluation and analysis of the overall System & applications to be integrated. But still in generic sense, use of Middleware is more justified for the reasons stated above (by Arun).

In my view, Amount of Customization (read Cost & Time) is one of the prime factor to consider.

Generally Use of middleware is driven by Time  considerations , Data safety and future expansions in
mind. Once you arrive at decision to use middle ware ,  there are quite a few available in the Market .. viz
Tibco , Webmethods , Vitria , IBM MQ Series ..etc

May be, but I don't think they would fit into corporate field. Corporate workplace is very different for what they have worked. So fitting into it is very difficult.
