I think we should see. Before investing, keeping a look on the sensex will not only give us a clear picture about the current market trends, but will also tell us, where we have more chances of profit and we can get more opportunity.

It depends on what kind of investor you are, if you are a short term trader and looking  for a short term profit you need to look at the Sensex and the market directions.

Where as if you ar e a long term investor in a specific company due to its fundamentals, say Reliance or L&T, etc. then the Sensex is not at all important, what's more important is that are you justified with the present price what you are buying because you are investing for a long term and companies with good fundamentals gives you better return in a longer term then the short term gains.

sensex may be taken as a broad indicator, though fundamentals/technical parameters have also to be consideredbefore investing,as it shows the general trend of market

It is a must for an investor to see the sensex while investing. In the case of INTRADAY trading you need to stick to the TV or PC throughout.... whereas in DELIVERY just remember what was the bid at time of purchase, later you can jus have a once in a week look at it so that it reaches your target......

Sensex would be a barometer of health of a market.

Yes , it depends on the type of investor. If u looking for long term investment it is better to find good stocks which has strong fundamentals but you should watch the sensex to know the market trends.if it goes very down breaking the support levels we can exit from the market with out huge loss.

i am with you on that.you got to have different parameters for short term and for long term investments. And yes you gain more on along run basis. The only caveat is your chosen industry might prove to be a damp squib.

Sensex no doubt is the barometer of the sentiment of the market, but investment should be done based on the business model of the specific company. It is because sensex will not fully discount the full potential of the business .The business  might unfold into a big business.Take for example Apollo Hospital .It was not getting as good  P/E in the previous bull market as it is enjoying now.It was floating at Rs.90 three yrs back.Today everybody is speaking about it.So If you choose right business at the right time regarless of the sensex you will earn substantially. You got to pick the stock before the story unfolds and everybody rushes to catch the rising stock. So Sensex though telle you about the sentiment of the market,it doesnt give give you a reason to invest.Let me make myself clear that here we are not talking about trading.Otherwise trading is more rewarding in a bull market.

If you are investing for long term. You need not look at sensex per se...but observe the general economic activity and business environment exisiting in short term as well as its  impact  in future along with keen observation of interest rates, commodities and inflation on the business activities.
