Should Yahoo & AOL go for a merger??

People feel that the two struggling Internet giants of the 1990s, Yahoo and AOL, should merge immediately. This idea isn't bad even the "big investors" are now calling for it too.

"Big investors" want Yahoo and AOL to merge, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong to become CEO of the combined company, and Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz to become Chairman.  With increasing competition from Facebook and google, Yahoo & AOL have lost some steam in this race....for this reason many are considering that yahoo &  AOL should merge for the good.

I think they should go for a merger, both Yahoo and AOL are in the same business, and it is a business that benefits greatly from scale. Yahoo and AOL are both basically media companies. They both use technology extensively, but their core competency is producing content to attract an audience and then selling display ads against that audience. They also both operate in E-mail, instant-messaging, sports, finance, news, maps, and other services, all of which currently compete with each other. That is senseless. By combining, Yahoo and AOL would achieve greater scale and reduce duplication.

Mergers bring with it a host of problems unless the companies getting merged are complementing the skill sets/markets of each other apart from the cultural aspects.

In this context, as Yahoo and AOL are in the same media domain, it is prudent for them to explore the possibility of a merger to become a bigger player in the market. This will bring economies of scale that will help them to face the competition in a better manner.

This will also help Yahoo to thwart other takeovers/mergers like the earlier aborted takeover / merger of Yahoo by Microsoft.....

Merging Yahoo and AOL is not "the answer" to both companies' woes. Once they combine, they'll still have to execute. But it's a good step toward for both companies.
They should do it immediately.

That could be a tough call since many times mergers can be a big risk. When AOL merged with Time Warner, that didn’t turn out so great. Sometimes when a merger doesn’t work with one company it probably will work with another. It might not be a coherent strategy for growth or success for either company. But on the other hand a merger might be a huge success for both companies. It really depends once all the details are laid out on the table, then the two companies should explore the possibilities.

IF and only IF the two companies come together only time will tell. In a merger everyone involved should proceed with caution.

They must have some different strategy though they are in same business, so, i dont think they should merge.

But i think there is no need for merger because at present both are competitor and yahoo is far ahead of AOL .yahoo has more market than aol it one of oldest company
