Social networking is invading the office. The issue used to be, "Which friends will I 'friend?'" But what about when the boss wants to friend you? And what about the other side of the coin—should you friend the boss? What about co-workers? Vendors? Clients?

No way!!

A boss remains a boss and thats it!! By befriending a person who you report to, you are exposing your strengths and weaknesses both. As far as strengths are concerned they can be used against you by reversing the ploy. The person may never play to your strengths. And that gives him ample opportunity to exploit your weaknesses!! Why put yourself in a position where you can be taken adbvantage out of at any given tme??

But strategically, if you can be friends with your boss's wife or husband... that works!! :))

If you can be friends with your boss' boss... that is just safe depositing your creer!! But these actions require guile, foxy nature (cunning) and at the same time a submissive mindset that you are in control of. Its really difficult.! Good topic for discussion particularly in the wake of work environments today!!

Psychologically speaking friendship is a dynamic, mutual relationship between two individuals. It is a feeling of comfort and emotional safety with a person and has no barriers or conditions as to the place where you can have it. If my boss happens to be a friend of my friend we become common friends. An ambitious subordinate or a colleague today might be my boss tomorrow. Will I refrain from keeping that friendship just because he is my boss! Then we are thinking stupid. As Rohini pointed out, as our Culture demands a decorum to be maintained between a Boss and a Subordinate, (that is why there is a hierarchy) you should take care in giving him due respect and never the friendship be a cause to let him down.

There is absolutely no harm in keeping friendship with colleagues. When you keep friendship with Vendors, make sure that it has in no way any bearing on your trustworthiness as an Employee of the Company.

"A boss remains a boss" - good and i will not refuse this statement. It is always good to have healthy relationship between boss and others. I do not find any fault in this. Social networking helps up boss to know about their employees interest; innovativeness and the way they behave with others...

"YES" its good idea but most difficult one to follow, boss always has certain set of behaviours and one of them is formal relationship with the subordinates n most of them doesn't sacrifice this behaviour coz it might cost them control over his subordinates...Another mantra is that bosses are superior species hence its really difficult to mingle with them, they also have certian boundries beyond which they cannot mingle.

Another wisdom is that "Superior's friend is the Colleague foe"

Still i believe that making boss ur friend would be really fruitful

Its very good if there exists a friendly relation between a Boss and an Employee because in such case, both can reveal each other more deeply and togetherly can come up with more fruitful results...
As far as social networking sites are considered, we should call everyone with whom we want to keep contact with as friend because there is no other option given...:) hehehe...oK, Jokes apart, I don't think there is any harm in calling your contacts and even your boss as friends in any social networking site. This will improve your relations...

There is no harm in to add your boss as your friend in any social networking site. Many times people have this fear that if they add their boss as their friend he will come to know about many things about their personal sites and secondly, they wouldn’t be able to upload their those nice picture on in their profile.

For this one should be careful. Adding boss as a connection is ok till you are behaving nicely on such social platforms. By nicely I mean while posting comments on anything and while pasting your pictures on site.

And it has some advantages as well. Sometime people don’t feel that much comfortable in expressing their ideas and here this will help them. Say …you are active in TooStep and you have added your boss as a connection now by reading your contributions he would come to know about your real strengths and knowledge.

1 thing should be taken care while adding boss as friend if you have your very close and personal friends on the same list with whom your mannerism of talking and behaving is totally different then you should not add your boss on the same site or you should have to maintain that decorum their as well. Don’t reveal your secrets there.

Finally, it would be better if your boss is inviting to join him as a friend on any social network instead of you sending him such requests. But if you have good relation with your boss and you are quite comfortable with him then even you can take the initiative for the same.

Regards,

Rohini.

Personal life should always be different from professional, i think if you frined your boss, you might share your imotions or could disclose things which strictly to be adhared imotionally , those can be taken granted or misintrepreted.....

I think it more depends on how your boss " Friends" you. Though people can try but the onus will still be with the boss. If he thinks that too much socialising might hamper the relation that is required in workplace then he might not champion & maintain a distance. many people might not be comfortable mainting dual relation with employee.
